Cross training shoes

I've been running and doing step aerobics in a Ryka cross training shoe. I've recently developed problems with my achilles tendon and I'm wondering if I shouldn't be using a shoe designed specifically for runnning and a specific aerobic shoe rather than a cross trainer for both??

Thanks!!

If you are running on a regular basis, you may want to purchase running shoes because they will provide you with additional support for that activity. I use cross-trainers for all of my step, hi-low, kickboxing etc. but I am not a runner. I guess it depends on how much running you are doing.

I would recommend running sneakers as well. I just bought new cross trainers and running sneakers and wow, what a difference. My ankles and calves were just starting to get sore after a workout or run but since I've replaced them they feel great. Go to a good shoe store where the salespeople know how to fit shoes, tell them about your achilles - Lady Footlocker was where I purchased mine and they were very helpful. The Saucony Hurricanes are great running sneakers, I'm on my second pair.

I agree!! I think shoes designed for running might serve you better.

I would get two different shoes, one for each activity. Running shoes do not have the lateral support that aerobic and cross-trainers offer. It's important for all the grapevines and side to side movements. Cross-trainers offer less stabilty than true runners. I like aerobics shoes for my step and hi/lo workouts as opposed to crosstrainers because I require a lot of cushioning. I also use my athletic shoes only for working out to ensure I get the maximum amount of use. Once I have retired them, they can be worn as street shoes. I was a New Balance devotee for years but have switched to Reebok premier runners and Reebok Vector IXT for aerobics.
