Cross training for 1/2 marathon training?

Cathlete
Hi Cathe!!
I've just signed up for a half marathon for this fall and the training program I was put on said to crosstrain twice a week. So naturally I want to crosstrain with you:7 ! Problem is I don't know what would be best. Bodymax for endurance? IMAX for the plyometrics? Circuit training?? I have everything of yours so selection isn't a problem. Just overwhelmed.
If it helps, my goals for the 1/2 marathon are 1). To fininsh.
2). To fininsh within 2hr 30min. 3). To feel good and strong in the last 3 miles of the race.

I know I can rotate the workouts, but I also know I want strength each time also. Any help you could give me would be great.

Thanks a billion!!

Hi Amyfit,

I am not Cathe, but thought I would tell you my experience with running half marathons and doing cross training with Cathe. I have ran 4 half marathons. I found I felt the best when I did power hour and ME for cross training. If you do not do any speed work or interval running in your weekly runs then the Imax videos are good.

Good luck with your training and race.

Let us know how it goes.

Beverly

P.S. I plan on my 5th half marathon in Sept. I hope to break 2hrs this time. Last race was 2hr and 2 minutes.

Have a great day!!

Hi Amyfit,

I run half marathons and marathons and for x-training I have been using BC and ME and my endurance has improved a great deal. I also do spinning to loosen up my muscles the day after my weekly long run.
I hope this helps.

Josie

Yes, both of you have helped!! I do do intervals on Wed. mornings so I'll leave out the IMAX's. Boot Camp is one of my all time favorites, and so is ME. I did BodyMax today since it gives a little of everthing.
My half marathon is in Sept. also!! Sept. 26th the Buckeye Half marathon. How about yours??
I plan to run a marathon either next spring or fall. I'm looking into the Cincinati Flying Pig Marathon and the Columbus 2005 marathon. Either of you all done either of these?? Or the Buckeye Half?

Thanks again!!!!!

I live in Los Angeles and will be running the Long Beach half on October 10th and then I will be running the OCmarathon in Newport Beach on December 5th. I have friends that have run the Flying Pig marahton and they loved it. My favorite marathons are New York and the San Diego Rock and roll. Once you do a full marathon you are going to get hucked.

Josie

Wow!! 2hr 2min!!! I can only dream........:) . Maybe we all could do weekly posts in the OD forum, you know talk about the workouts of the and how we felt. I'm going to Tennesse on Sunday and I'll be there for a week. I hope they have some great running trails.

Good luck to both of you in your Halves and Whole Marathons!! I'm so pumped for this race I can't wait!! And I can't wait to do my first whole marathon!!

What do you all do eating wise, when preparing for a long distance race??

Amyfit

What training program are you following? There was a great one for half marathons on Runners World magazine a couple of months ago check their web site under training, the last issue of the magazine has a training program for the full marathon for beginners to advance. Regarding my eating, I usually have more carbs on the days that I run for more that one hour for the longer runs such as 2 hours and above I eat good carbs the day before and in the morning I have a marathon bar made by Snickers and I will also use e-gels, they work great for me I also run with a water fanny pack. My goal for the next half is 1 hour and 50 minutes, my marathon goal is 4 hours, this will qualify me for Boston. The last marathon I ran was June 6th in San Diego and my time was 4:12(hit the wall at 24).

You guys are amazing me!!! I ran a 15k last year and my time was 1:26:42. I injured my knee shortly after that, so that's why I've lowered my time.
Actually, I'm following a program out Marathoning for Mortals book. It's written by John "The Penguin" Bingham and Coach Jenny Hadfield. Great book. The only thing I've altered was it only had me running 3 days a week. I nixed the mid week rest day and that's the day I do my intervals. My week looks like this.

Mon: moderate run 75% of HR

Tues: Crosstrain weights and video or biking

Wed: intervals for 30 min. I do 400's, miles, hills. ect.....

Thurs: easy run 65-70%of HR

Fri: Crosstrain weights and cardio

Sat: Long run 65-70%HR

Sun: Rest

I also try to get in yoga at least 2-3x a week.

I love Runner's World and I've been reading their back issues for more ideas and advice!!
Do you concern yourself with calories or let your body tell you what it needs. I'm hoping to lose a couple pounds doing this as well;-) .

Thanks!!!
Amyfit

I think that I'm going through menoupause and my weight has gone up from 140 to 150 pounds in the last year, but I feel strong when I run and it has not affected my times. I hate to count calories, But I do try to eat healthy. Depending on your age as you increase your mileage you will loose weight. The following is my training program:

Mon: Spinning or BC

Tues: Running 5.5 or 6 miles at (8:30 to 9:00 minute pace per mile)

Wed: ME

Thurs: 8 mile run at marathon pace (9:00 min. per mile, this includes a 1 min. walk break for every 10 minutes of running.)

Fr: Rest

Sat: Spinning or a run half the distance of my Sunday long run.

Sun: Long run

I follow the Galloway way of running, he writes for the magazine also and I love The Penguin's articles. I do not do track workouts because I have injured myself doing them, so I use my spinning as my speed workouts I go all out on the sprint and more resistance on the hills. By doing this my times on the 5k are 23:45 and the 10K is 52:00.

Can I email you?? Or you email me? I'd love to talk to you more about running and training:) ! If you want, you can email me at [email protected] or [email protected].

P.S. you are fast!! I did mile intervals this week and my top pace was 8:20. Wow, to go that fast for that long. I'm in awe......

Amyfit

Sure, my e-mail is [email protected]. I will not respond to you on the weekends because I work on the computer all week long and on the weekend I do not go near one. So if you have any questions i will respond to you on Monday. This weekend I will be running 6 miles tomorrow morning and 12 on Sunday.

I just have to chime in as a distance runner myself! You have gotten some great advice....I agree with www.runnersworld.com for good training tips too, I got my first marathon training schedule from them. I have run alot of halfs and 12 marathons. I might even meet up with Josie in Dec as I want to do the Malibu marathon...:)...and Amy....I am so jealous....one of my favorite phrases is "When Pigs Fly" so when I saw the Flying pig marathon I knew one year I would have to do it....I do hope your training goes well....weights and Imax would be my recommendations....Good Luck...Carole

Thanks Carole!! When pigs fly is one of my favorite sayings too!! In fact, my very first race ever was called the pig run. It was a 5k at the Jazz and Rib fest here in Columbus. I figure if my 1st race ever was a pig run, then my 1st marathon should be one too;-) . Well, if you have any advice or encouragement please email me or post to me here. I'm so excited I can't wait for this Sept!!
You all let me know how the Malibu Marathon goes!! I'd love to hear all about it!!
