Cross-trainer shoes

HPLECTRA

Cathlete
Hello Cathe,

I wanted to know what you would recommend for cross-trainer shoes for weight training and step workouts. I am currently using my running sneakers but I don't feel these are appropriate or have the bounce needed for this type of workout.

Thank you for any information that you can provide.

Sincerely,

Not Cathe here, but from what I remember, Cathe wears Ryka's--if you do a search using "shoes" or "rykas" I'm sure you'll find tons of recommendations.

Also, I can't emphasize enough how much you should NOT be using running shoes for cross-training activities. Running shoes are specifically designed to hinder sideways movement and can really do damage to your knees and ankles. Go get some crosstrainers asap!! :)

Hi Allison,

Boy were you right about all the comments available on-line! Phew, so many people are having sizing issues with the Rykas.

I guess my next shopping trip will be to a sporting goods store to try out different styles of cross-trainers.

I have been running most of my life. Roads, tracks and trails. I didn't really think that using my running shoes for step workouts would be a problem. My ankles and knees have never given me any trouble (knock on wood) ;-) thankfully.

My running shoes are relatively new but don't seem like they give much bounce back. Doing the step routines with Cathe made me think that her shoes must have springs in them.

Do the cross-trainer type sneakers have more cushioning?

Thanks for the advice.
Sincerely,

i just ordered asics gel kayano cross trainer shoes. they are a combo shoe that has impact support for running and jumping but also have lateral support needed for step. i got them at www.zappos.com asics web page doesn't allow you to order them directly but they have loads of info about which shoe you should by. the zappos web site had my soes at my door int 2 days!

Hello Kariev,

Thank for letting me know about the Asics Gel Kayano in a cross-trainer. I was not aware they had this as a cross-trainer version.

I am a member of RoadRunner Sports that allows for a 60 day trial period. Good thing because I have a hard time finding a sneaker that works for me. I have a size 9, med to high arch and prefer light weight sneakers for running. Currently for trails I use Asics Gel-Eagle which is no longer on the market. :( Good thing I bought 2 at the time because I really like them. For general road or treadmill running I use Saucony Hurricane. A size 9 was squared off on the toes (weird) and a 9.5 is too big but stuck with this. This shoe is the one I use for Cathe's workouts and does not have that bounce feeling that I think you need for the higher impact workouts.

Let me know what your thoughts are on the Kayano's.

Thanks,

I agree, using running shoes for step or other lateral motions is a real problem. During the Cathe RT, the guest speaker gave strong recommendations about this...she is a physical therapist and has seen much damage from people wearing the wrong shoes for specific activities. I know from personal experience, that even attempting to wear my running shoes for step/aerobics was a big no-no and I felt it right away.

I love the ryka shoes that Cathe wears for step activities! They are super comfy! :)

xoxo, Denise :)

Hi Denise,

Thank you for your input. What version are the Ryka cross-trainers that you are using?

I need to get to a store! :) My DH is home to work on the 3rd floor and I doubt this will be a do-able thing for me today.

Take Care,

two days ago i did the cardio premix of body max 2. theses sneakers were so comfortable. when i would do step in my running shoes my ankles would be so sore the next day b/c i didn't have the lateral support. these were great. i'm doing some HITT today so i'll let you know how they do with running as well.
