CREDIT CARD FRAUD - am so angry

For the second time in two months, I have been the victim of a credit card fraud ;( This time, it's the huge amount of 550EUR! I am so angry!! Someone used my card on a UK gambling site on 10 February. How dare anyone do that!! I only received my statement today and ofcourse had my card blocked immediately.

The credit card company will investigate but it will take 3-4 weeks before they can let me know whether I will be reimbursed. I mean, I don't even know if I'm gonna get my money back. I have to proof that it wasn't me who used the card. Now how am I gonna do that?! x(

As I only have had this card for 7 weeks, only five companies have my card details. And I sent emails to those companies, including the the gambling site.

I am so ANGRY right now. Steam is coming out of my ears and I'm ready to use someone as a punching bag.... oh, maybe I should ask my x to come over, ha! Finally found some use for him }(

I told my kids that we were robbed of so much money and they fled to their rooms.... "we'll stay out of your way for a week, we'll be in bed". I know we can still make jokes, but nevertheless I'm very very angry. This really is a lot of money for me. Just think how many Cathe w/o I could have bought....

Oh wow! That really stinks! What credit card do you have? You might want to think about Citibank. They have protection against this. As soon as they see something being charged to me that doesn't quite fit my spending habits, they imediately call me to verify that I made the charges.

I'm really sorry that you're going through this and I hope it will work out for you.

That's what I told the credit card company: ABN AMRO Bank. They should have seen it so totally doesn't fit my spending habits.

I hope they have issued you a new credit card number and cancelled the other. Otherwise, it is likely that person is going to continue to use it. I would be screaming mad. Fight it.

I have been a victim myself Dutchie...and beyond being mad that someone has the nerve to steal from me...what really ticked me off was the fact that it was SOOO hard to get my money back...or to be relieved from having to pay that portion of the bill! I actually refused to pay it until it was finally removed...and the credit card company would not remove it...the company that put the purchase through gave me a credit....the credit card company was no help at all...

Have a great work out!

I'm sorry this happened to you. I always thought that you are only responsible for $50 if you report the incident is fraudulent w/in 24 hours? Maybe only in the US? (I would cancel the card, document EVERYTHING, every call, every letter, get names/dates and ask for fax numbers to confirm conversations w/ the cc company. If there is a govt agency that deals w/ cc fraud, call them. I know whenever I start confirming conversations w/ a followup fax I get good results, especially if I show that I forwarded a copy to a government agency or attorney. I think seeing everything in writing makes them nervous, especially if you show them you documented every phone call, name and date.) HTH

I'm so sorry, Dutchie.

My daughter had money taken out of her ATM at Christmas time. She finally got reimbursed by the bank but not without having to go through a lot of crap to prove it wasn't her fault. I felt bad for her, too, because they live week to week and try so hard to pay all their bills on time.

Hope everything turns out okay for you.

You must have some sort of protection policy with CitiBank. I have 2 cards with them. I have had fraud on the card & they never contacted us. We had our information stolen while we were in England, they didn't use the card until after we had returned to the US. We sent them our return ticket stubs & copies our our passports. Even then it took 3 months to get it straigtened out.

One of the companies that has my credit card details sent me an email to call them ".... so we can provide you with further details of the fraudulent transactions ....".

I immediately called the credit card company to give them the information and asked them to call this specific online company. And the woman on the phone said that that information was of no use to them. Can you believe that! I explained to them that an employee of that company may have gotten hold of my credit card details and used it and she didn't care!x(

Dutchie, your anger is understandable & the incident is a good reminder to all of us to be ever vigilant.

I suspect you'd feel better if you could be proactive. In the U.S., you have 60 days after receiving a credit card bill to protest a charge. I realize your laws are different but I doubt if they are less consumer friendly. If you haven't filed your protest in writing, you should do so.

The merchant has to show proof of the charge so I suspect you're going to win this unless someone is good at forging your signature. But is there a way that you can show evidence that you could not have been in the UK at the time of the charge? I realize that travel between the Netherlands & the UK is quick, but if you were buying groceries at home or at work, just an hour before the UK charge, the charge isn't very credible.

Finally contact the appropriate governmental agency to find out what your legal rights & obligations are & what assistance they can provide you in fighting this fraud.

I truly feel for you. The dog problem & now this. Please don't put any holes in your walls or bruises on your ex! I'm sure this will have a happy, fair resolution, but please keep is updated.
