cortisone shots

I had one it my knee, they numbed it up with some cold liquid stuff in a bottle while injecting it, so the injection didn't hurt. It was a pretty big needle, and did leave a small bruise/bump. Unfortunately, it didn't fix a gosh darn thing or make the hurt stop. So, it didn't work for me. Surgery did. But we all have dif issues/probs. It may work for you. Maybe someone else will chime in.

I had a cortisone shot for my shoulder late last summer - didn't do anything for me either (ended up having surgery after the shot and 8 weeks of PT) - but it's worth trying. I have a friend who had shoulder problems and he got cortisone shot and did 6 weeks of PT and is FINE now.

I've had two in my hip.

The first time was fine, but the pain came back.

The second time was fine initially, and then within 24 hours, my butt felt like it was on fire. I think it's referred to as "steroid flare." Whatever it's called, I wanted to run outside in the dead of Winter and sit in a huge pile of snow.

Oh, and the pain came back.

Mind you, my Ortho is a big name in his field, so he's no schmo. He did his best to help me, and since I didn't need surgery, the only thing left was physical therapy.

I chose not to do PT. I started icing the area, which really helped. Now, after a few years of hip pain, the hip almost never bothers me. Sometimes I feel little tight, or it gets a little twingy. When that happens, I ice it again (I discovered it originates from my hamstring, so that's where I apply the ice.), and the pain is gone soon after.

I've had a shoulder problem too. Rather than do the cortisone shot again, I tried figuring out what irritated the joint. Eventually I narrowed it down to a particular yoga pose. Once I cut that out of my routine, the pain disappeared.

Any thoughts on what might be causing the pain? The shot may very well work, especially in conjunction with PT, but finding the source might be even more beneficial down the road.

how bad is the shoulder issue? i had one because of inflamation. that was months ago.no more pain maybe because i did not wait too long to get it done

FWIW, my DH had 2 shots in his lower back last year and they actually helped him enormously. They didn't take away all the pain, but they reduced it to where it no longer affects his daily life. (He said it brought the pain down from a "7/8" down to a "2"--on a scale of 1-10.)

He's very happy he did it--me too!
