concrete floor

I was just reading on your site about how bad concrete floors are to exercise on. Well, I live in Ethiopia and ALL floors are concrete. At home I have a concrete floor with hardwood on top. At school I have a concrete floor with linoleum tile on top. I have put a thin carpet on top of that, but other than that, there isn't much I can do. Given the situation, what other recommendations would you make? I love step exercise and usually work out 5 or 6 days/week.

here's what I did

I workout in the basement which is concrete. When I first started doing Cathe my bad knee really started acting up. In addition, I started having problems with my ankles - something I'd never had before.

Fortunately, I have these two area carpets from when I lived in an apartment with hardwood floors. They are 5' x 7' and I spread one out on top of the other and the difference has been unbelievable!

Sometimes you can find remarkable deals on carpet remnants at carpet shops.

Carpet padding

I also have to work out on concrete. I went to a carpet store that sells remnants along with the carpet padding to go under it. I bought some of the padding..the thickest stuff possible, and put it under my remnant and it works out great.Good luck!

the concrete solution

I worked out on vinyl over concrete for 7 years. No way to go. Just this year, i invested in rubber target tiles (very expensive, not necessary)-- I was very unhappy with just the rubber tiles, which I thought would solve my problems. I found the REAL answer was to use a rubber based 7'9" x 7'9" interlocking mat that I got at Fitness Warehouse for $350.00 over the tiles (or over plain concrete or vinyl or..)--it will extend my aerobic life indefinitely.

Our Solution

My husband put together a workout room for me as a surprise christmas present. His solution for an aerobic mat was really clever. He went to a ranch and livestock supply store and purchased a mat that is approximately 10' x 10' and 1" thick. I think it is call horse matting.

Just another suggestion to add ideas for you. Ethiopia, huh? We really do hail from the four corners.

Good luck.

I second the padding

I also have concrete flooring and had extreme back pain after workouts. I bought a carpet padding remnant for $25.00. It is 9' by 4' and is perfect. When I got it I thoght this little thing will never make a difference. I was wrong. I wish I had $350.00 to invest in flooring like someone else posted. That's awesome. I am envious!!!! Good luck.
