Computers smokn' at college yesterday

Literally, the computers in the entire school made these terrible loud noises along with the lights and the strange thing was my math professor ignored it and continued with his lecture. Then the computer I sat at made the same noise and smoke came rolling from it, I didn't care about the lecture anymore, "I was out of there"...I was thinking the darned thing was going to explode in my face...
Other students of course followed suit...anyways...

Turns out there was an electric surge somewhere...But the really funny thing was, there they were, professors with doctrine degrees, the dean, the maintenance crew, all standing around pondering the situation for about an hour...and one student finally went over and said why don't you just unplug the mainframe for now and reboot it later? It really was as simple as that...

And because the rest of the teachers didn't know how to teach without using powerpoint, internet or any other computer program they normally use to teach with, they said to go home, there wasn't any since of staying, since they didn't have the computers, WOW!!! Amazing how technology has such an impact...

Just thought I'd share:)

Technology progressing in some ways is a good thing, but on the other hand, speaking of computers and such, it REALLY burns me that every teacher out there expects there to be computers and internet access available to every child for homework! I think if they are going to assign homework that involves computers and internet, then they should allow time for that in school.

Obviously, we don't have internet access at home...and I went off on a tangent, didn't I? LOL LOL Thank goodness it's FRIDAY...

Why do you think that someone with a doctorate degree in an area other than computers and technology should know the answers to this computer emergency? Their doctorate is earned in a specific area, and as such, might not involve expertise in the area of smoking computers.

Sorry, my mistake, they are professors who have their doctrines in Computer Technology. That's why they were chosen to have the discussion amongst the group.

Ahhhh...thanks for the clarification. Sounds a little scarey, but maybe a good time to joke about being worked so hard that the computers smoke!

There is no doubt that presentation programs like Powerpoint are killing the way we teach and learn.

I teach outdoor skills and I can't get over how many powerpoints are available on wilderness survival. So the next time the dam or levee breaks or I'm stranded in an avalanche, I'll fire up the laptop and run my survival program.

My kids at 5 knew that if something electrical was smoking you unplug it.

Maybe my being a neoluddite isn't such a bad thing after all! Just give me a chalkboard and a piece of chalk (and an occasional overhead projector) and I'm ready to teach!
