Comparison of IMAX to IMAX2

Okay, educated crowd:

I did IMAX2 for the 5th time today. I've never had to much fun while dying (and doing something good for me). I've only done this workout on a 6" step even though I do all my others on 8". This time through, I did the first 5 intervals on an 8" step (I'm 5'2"), and the rest of the workout on 6" (I thought I might get too tripped up if I didn't lower the step for the straddle taps).

My question is: If I can work up to IMAX2 entirely on 8", will that be comparable to IMAX on 6"? I don't know if it will, because all the hard interval stuff is on the floor, anyway. I'm just wondering what I'm in for when I get enough $$$ to get IMAX. What are the intervals like? Are there any harder than interval 9 of IMAX2?

Thanks,

Carol F

IMHO, I-Max The Original holds a moderate intensity edge OVER IMax2. The intervals are simpler and fairly straightforward, and the floor intervals are really, REALLY mean. (GOD, I love that!) IMax2 is a tad dancier than I-Max 1 both in the mid-range aerobic cycles and the interval blasts.

And yes, there are harder intervals than #9 in I-Max 2. You have about a million vertical jumps in Interval #2, about a billion straightline plyo jacks in Interval #4, box jumps plus side-to-side "slalom jumps" plus MORE plyo jacks in Interval #5; then after the perceived exertion check you have Interval #8, a real nosebleed of "Power Scissors" (what Cathe now calls "Explosive Lunges"), and #10, which we call The Doom Interval, is leaps to the side plus airborne jacks plus high tuck jumps.

Keep saving your money and get the DVD at the first opportunity. Pound for pound I-Max 1 is the single best cardio/interval training workout out there.

Hi Carol,

Interesting question: is IMAX2 on an 8" step comparable to IMAX on 6"? Hmmmm. Okay. I agree with everything Aquajock said, but want to add that all the hard stuff in IMAX is *also* all done on the floor. While the specific interval blasts in IMAX are intense, I think they are quite comparable to IMAX2. The difference between the two workouts comes from the medium-intensity step aerobics sections, IMO. In IMAX, these are all done on the 8" step, which makes them more intense, and gives you slightly less recovery between intervals. I usually do IMAX on the 8", and IMAX2 on the 6", because I just copy whatever Cathe does. In the past I've done the opposite, and found that IMAX became much less intense, and IMAX2 became much more difficult. SO, what am I recommending for you? If you can get through IMAX2 on the 6", then you are ready to do IMAX on the 6" step. If you make it through all right, then jack it up to 8" and see the difference.

Incidentally, A-Jock's numbers are a bit inflated, although her perception is accurate :)
The number of plyo-jacks in Interval 4: 48.
Plyo-jacks in Interval 5: 16.
Total number of plyo-jacks in IMAX: 64.
The number of jumps in Interval 2: 64.
The number of power-scissors in Interval 8: 48 single count; 4 four-count; 8 two-count.
The number of airborn jacks in Interval 10: 16
The number of tuck jumps in Interval 10: 16
Total moves in IMAX that fry your legs: a gazillion.
The benefits to your cardio and strength capacity: priceless.

Have fun!

I can't wait to read the questions soon, "Which is harder, Imax, Imax2 or Imax3?"

I can't wait to know the answer!

For me, IMAX 1 is easier in the step coreography than IMAX 2.I like more the IMAX 2 music and talking about diversion I like much more IMAX 2.Talking about intensity both are in the same level. Maybe IMAX 1 is harder.

I agree that Imax is harder than Imax2. But, I find Imax to be really boring, and therefore ten times as hard to get through. The music is instrumental, and the aerobic intervals are just not as dancey. I find with Imax2 I have to resist the urge to do it too often, because it's just sooo fun. I don't want to overdue it and burnout on it. I don't have that problem on the Imax tape, I avoid it at all cost.

I like them both, may heaven help me, but I do think IMAX Classic is a bit harder than IMAX2.

IMAX2 is more fun, but I think that goes along with Cathe's workouts in general...increasingly, (with exceptions of course) I find that the newer the workout, the more fun it is. I attribute that to music selection and Cathe. Her knowledge & experience grows with each series, and she is VERY aware of what her core fans want. Such a blessing.

I know we all have our own thoughts on which is tougher. I'll just put it this way, imax is the workout i do when i need to have my butt kicked, imax 2 is one i do when i want to have fun.

I just don't care as much for imax 2. for me at least, the more choreographed a workout is, the less intense it is.

I think IMAX1 is tougher than IMAX2 as well, but I always pull 2 off the shelf, 1 just collects dust. The fun factor is the big instigator for me. IMAX1 is just so repetative. About half way through a blast Cathe will say that *we're half way there* and I feel like I've been doing that exercise for way too long already. IMAX2 mixes thing up so the time goes faster. The best workout is the one you do :)

Is it just me? I find my heartracing throughout Imax 2 but not as much in imax 1. I definely feel more challenged doing imax2.

Which only proves, once again, that everyone is different! Thank heaven Cathe has blessed us all with a wide variety to choose from.

Ruth:)
