Chin-Up Check-In Wed 5.3

Kathryn are you going to try negatives? (eccentrics). I think these may help, just don't overdo.

Catherine, keep in mind that when you do 179 within the P90X, you are not just doing pushups - plain pushups. You are doing all different types, wide hand placement, military, plange, slow-motion, etc. And of course the ever popular psycho pushups - gotta love these. I used to do sets of pushups and could complete more, but when I added all the variations - it was MUCH tougher! You're doing incredibly well!!!!

Soosan, I was pretty athletic when I was young, but I went for 12 years with NO workouts and had 4 babies within that time and gained 60 lbs. When pregnant with baby 5, I got my act together-was sick of being lazy and out of shape-and found CATHE!!!! And all of you wonderful people. I remember when I was little - I loved rope climbing, tree climbing - true tomboy. After all those years, maybe muscles DO have memory. Just took LOTS of work to get it back!! Sometimes I feel like I'm 12 again. I never take physical activity for granted now - it's a blessing!!

Kathryn, you might as well start w/what's easier and once you're there, you can move on to pull-ups.

I've been wondering the same thing about the sticking point. I can quite easily do a chin-up from a stance where my arms are bent a little, but when I start from a dead hang, I can only pull myself up a couple of inches. If I started the chin-up at the point to which I can pull myself up from a dead hang, I could get all the way up but ONLY if I start at that point, not if I pulled myself up to that point. My 5-yr-old daughter can get more than half way up from a dead hang, but can easily get all the way up from an almost straight-armed stance. But you said you can pull yourself up to that half-way point (I'm assuming to where your arms are at a 90 degree angle) and THEN you get stuck.

We need Maribeth to explain the physics behind this.

I was going to try them, but I think I need to stabilize my pull-up station more before I try. When I tried to hoist myself up into place with momentum (to get ready to do negatives), there was too much movment in the station for my taste. I used to have the legs weighted down, but moved those weights a while ago. Guess I'll have to put them back!

It's OK to have a SLIGHT bend in your arms when doing chin-ups.

Thanks, Briee. I have to remind myself where I came from and have learned to compare myself to only me. I have made progress and that's what's important. So what if HB can do 400 pushups in a day (gulp!!) I am totally kidding HB. You know I think you are awesome. You and Briee are inspiring me to test my limits and I appreciate that!!!

Now if I could only get out of this funk this weekx( x( x( I have only worked out once and that was cardio. I just finished P90X rotation and then took the trip and I think I am a little burned out. This too shall pass. Cause I know I have to report to you demonic ladies LOL. Thanks for listening to all my whining lately!!

Catherine

Catherine...I know this "funk" you are referring to. It happens when I go a few days without working out and it has happened too often these past few months. Although, most of the time when you take a few days off...you come back stronger. So this little rest may do you some good.

I haven't seen a post from Maribeth in years...I'd LOVE to hear from her.

Joanne....you went on the road trip too? If I was anything like Soosan...I wouldn't be speaking to you. Of course Soosan got to go on the road trip as well, so both of you would be off limits.

Allergies are making me crazy right now. I was allergy tested and told that milk isn't an issue so I added a little yogurt to my previously vegany-type diet - now all my allergies are back (pollen, mold, trees, etc.). Sometimes I can't figure out why I go to the doctor (apologies Michele if you peek into this thread). I've got to get my diet back in order!! (sorry for the whining!)

Catherine, it's funny how it's so hard for even very committed exercisers to come back after a break. If I have to stop due to illness or vacation or general busy-ness, it takes me a while to really get back into it. It helps me understand why so many people don't exercise at all, despite the unbelievable health benefits - it's very difficult to start. You just keep saying, "tomorrow, tomorrow..."

Joanne was at the RT, Briee. We sat together at breakfast one morning and she showed me a picture of herself, Jillybean and Aquajock. She's extremely nice. I'm sorry about your allergies. You're saying that avoiding dairy inhibits seasonal allergies? I never heard that - very interesting.

Better get the kids off to school! I'll check in later.

Oh Sooooosan-you are so nice too! The road trip was such a blast - wasn't it? I am getting together on Sunday with Aquajock and the others. Sometimes we call Maribeth. I'll have to ask her if she can do chin-ups.

We've started a new kind of check-in where half the members aren't speaking to each other. Probably a first on Cathe.com! (And I still do want to consecutively bump every check-in thread we've ever started just to wreak havoc.}( Wish I had the time...)

I didn't work out today because I was at a school track meet all day. My two sons are slow runners just like their mom was. I think that slowness and otherwise lack of athleticism spurred me on to be as fit an adult as I can be, and I'm quick to remind my kids how sticking with it all these years has actually made me more "athletic" than most people my age.

Knowing I wasn't going to work out today, I did BC yesterday to cover a bit of everything. This time I included all back and chest work and felt no pain of any kind. The only modifications I made was not to use a barbell (but used heavy dumbbells) and to do push-ups from my knees because full body push-ups aggravated my injury the last time I did them. Next week I'm going to do everything as I normally do but still not do any chin-ups, although I might do some of those inverted thingies HB posted about.

Tonight DH and I are going to ballroom dance lessons at the Y and then to a friend's for a taco party.

Just thought I'd fill you all in on the minutia of my day!:p
