Chin-Up Check-In Friday 3.24

Soosan

Cathlete
All right, I just did 3 neg 10-count reps, so I should be able to do one chin-up, right? RIGHT? Wrong! Not even close! (Although I'm probably pulling myself up 3 inches instead of one.)

But I'm not discouraged. I'll just work on these 10-ct negatives until I get to six reps, then increase the count to 15 and go from there. As long as I have some kind of doable plan that will incrementally get me to my goal, I'll be happy. I may intersperse these negatives w/chair assists a la P90X if my progress slows.

How are the rest of you doing?

Hi Sooooosan,

I just did about 6 neg 5-count rep. They seemed harder today. Maybe, because I am still a little sore from Wed. This check-in is great - it is really pushing me to keep on pulling!

I think you and I have the same body type.

Joanne

I think so too, Joanne. It has its advantages and disadvantages and this is one of the disadvantages! This check-in is motivating me too.

I'm also going to try one or more here and there throughout the day whenever I get the urge - kind of a no pressure way to improve.

My 5-yr-old really loves the bar. She's on it all day long. She still can't do one from a dead hang but you should see her zoom across the monkey bars at school since we got it.

I'm doing mine Tues - Thurs - Sat this week, so I'm a little off the check in schedule. I KNOW none of you will mind! Yesterday I did my big set of 10, then lesser sets of 4's and 3's. More tomorrow.

Sooosan,

I do the same thing. I have to walk by my bar (it is downstairs in a closet door frame) when I do laundry, etc., so I jump on it here and there throughout the day.

That is great about your daughter. More kids should be playing on the equipment at the park. Heck, I love to play on the equipment at the park :)

Joanne

Hi, can't believe I'm in a chin-up/pull-up thread.:) I'm working on negatives.

Thanks for mentioning monkey bars, my kids playscape has them and I didn't even think of that. I also discovered that on our Powerhouse weight machine I can hook the lat pulldown bar in the "storage" position and it's sturdy enough to work on wide grip pull-ups.

Weak upper body skinny gal will keep working and notes it's a good thing I'm a stubborn don't give in gal, too.

You mean "chin up" as in "this ain't so bad", or are you talking about the kind where you actually grab onto a bar and pull yourself up?:p

Okay, I'll go back where I belong now:D

Michele

I tried negatives at the gym yesterday on the assisted pull up machine (without assistance of course) and it didn't really work. You have to stand on this little platform to get to the chin up bar anyway, and it is too dangerous to jump to the top from that high. Some people looked at me like I am a freak for trying to jump to the top! So I just did some chin ups with some assistance and will lower my assistance level each time.

Good idea about the monkey bars. I think there are some at the park where I usually run so I can always try the negatives there without having to buy a bar.

Allow me this one hijack:

Michele,

I want them to call this the "I hate chin-ups or any kind of pull-ups" thread.

Back to the real check-ins now and I really am working on these.

Hi All! Great job! I did 7 today. (of course, the CHEAT kind!) I am so sore from doing them M-W-F. My upper back, bis, tris & shoulders had serious DOMS from Monday. It was all I could do to do the 7 I did today. I had to break after the first 4. My form sure needs help too. My body wants to swing under the bar after I jump up. I am working on trying to keep it straight up & down if that makes sense? I am glad we are checking-in also as it is pushing me beyond what I think I can do with this killer move! Okay, off to babysit my GK's til tomorrow nite. I'll try to get online at their home tonight. HUGS ALL & TGIF!

I don't know if this article was the clearest. I believe your going to have to do a few rounds of negative pullups before the pullup magic occurs (when I say pullups, which I slip up and say ALL THE TIME, just know I'm referring to chin ups K?). Don't get discouraged Susan...it may take a few weeks of doing these every other day...but it WILL come. You will get stronger.

I have not done my workout today yet, but I think I may just do negatives with added weight - we'll see. I too am still sore from the other day. (unlike HB who can just pound out sets of 10 anytime she wants - amazing) I don't know if I'll do regular sets today. You guys are motivating me to keep at it!! I would like to do P90X shoulders and arms to day....so I'm sure chinups will be limited from that alone. I'll check back later.

Sooooooooooooosan...I found that when I was doing chinups every other day, my arms didn't recover "fully" if you know what I mean. If I were you I'd try this....do negatives every other day for a few weeks and then give your arms a 3-5 day break and try a chinup. Just a thought.

Hey ladies!!! Sounds like everyone is doing great and staying motivated. Except Melody's little transgression (sp)- but we all know she loves chinups!!!;-) Anyway, I agree with Briee, it'll take several weeks of doing negatives at that level to get to one chinup. I started doing negatives about 2 weeks into P90x and it was week 9 that I discovered I could do a chinup. Maybe could of done one sooner- just didn't try for some reason. I haven't worked out today -yet. Trying to motivate. It's P90X chest shoudlers and triceps yippee!! OK, I am motivated!! I will try to do 2 chinups before I start my wt work.

Catherine

Hey Melody....this is the "I LOVE CHINUPS THREAD". I love them I love them I love them I love them I love them I love them I love them I love them.

If you say this enough times....you will begin to believe it. Until you try doing them of course and then you must go through the process again. One day the two will coincide...I promise.

Briee (this worked for pushups so it's gotta work for chinups)

Yeah, right. I'm to chin-ups as Michele is to cardio...and we know how that goes.:p

Michelle, I might add, is taking the wrong approach to cardio. Mind over matter!!!

The same concept we are using for chinups works for cardio. The "I hate cardio thread" is currently mistitled. It's self defeating. They must do Imax 3 ten times in a row while chanting "I love Cardio" and I promise you....the next time they do it, by itself...they will LOVE it and appreciate it for what it is (which IS EASY compared to doing it 10 times in a row). Everything in life is relative. Got that Michelle!!!! ;) ;) ;)

Now I'm FINALLY going down to workout. I read through AJ's mishmosh on the other thread and my work out should be a peice of cake, chinups and all, compared to that.

Briee

Repeat after me - "We love them for what they do for us! We love them because they give our biceps wonderful definition! We love pushups, too!" It's worth it, it's worth it, it's worth it, and I'll eagerly get out of bed tomorrow morning and DO IT ALL AGAIN!!!!!! Then I'll eat donuts!

Ok, if you put that way, as long as the donuts are chocolate...I LOVE CHINUPS, I LOVE CHINUPS, I LOVE CHINUPS, I LOVE CHOCOLATE, I LOVE CHINUPS....

OK, stuff happens. A friend in need called just as I finished my warmup this evening, so I missed my workout today x( I did manage to get out 1 chinup please squeak out a little more than half another. My goal now is to get to a set of 2. I feel like I'll be there soon. Kinda had that feeling just before I could do one, so I think it's coming!!! :)

Catherine

Good job Melody!!! Keep it up.

DONUTS. Did I say anything about donuts??? NO....I didn't. How did donuts enter that chant?? Honeybunch...you did great up until the donut part. NO DONUTS!!

Briee (man, oh man, donuts are my downfall....I've programed them out of my head...but now they are there again. x( x( x( - I think I need a donut cause this workout is just not happening tonight - this is all your fault HB!) Catherine...I've had something important come up too and when I remember what it was I'll let ya know. Life happens. Donuts happen.....and then fat happens. Okay I've just talked myself back into a workout tonight:p :p .

Good job, Briee, work it out gal! Today was my rest day. Tomorrow is boot camp and chinups, well, attempted chinups. I promise.
