Chin-Up Check-In Fri 5.12

>>and I are off to a margarita party in a few minutes.

>>Sooooooooooooosan

Hey - no fair! I wanna go to the margarita party, too.:-(

I believe in looking at gymnasts also you'll see that bodyweight exercises can get you there, as very few of them ever lift weights. However, I'm have to go with Briee's opinion if for no other factor than boredom. Hey, I'm a Gemini, gotta keep moving, gotta keep changing.:)

>I just wonder if doing chinups and pushups regularly is enough
>upper body work. They are compound exercises and work lots of

>enough?? I am sure that depends on goals.

I think chin ups plus push-ups hit about everything. I'd just add some tricep dips (for more tricep work) and some shoulder work for the side delts (front delts get plenty of work from the push-ups) and rear delts. IMO, that would be a complete upper body workout (the tricep dips aren't even necessary, especially if you do some tricep push-ups, but I just like to do 'em!).

Catherine, hope your knee problem isn't a big one.

Melody: congrats on your progress. Isn't it exhilerating! (You know, non-exercisers would probably not understand this at all!).

I wasn't going to do my chin-up attempts yesterday, because today is P90X chest and back (and I'll have plenty of work on those today!), but I was hanging some more laundry on the rack next to my pull=up station, and it called to me.

First attempt from a dead hang got me to a nose-up! Alright, probably more of a 'forehead-up," but I'm seeing more over the top of the bar than before! Second attempt was a 'forehead-up" (again, maybe a 'top of head-up'?). Third a 'nose-up" (see previous note!). Fourth a "forehead-up.' Fifth and final a "nose-up." All were with about a 2 count hold at top position with a 6 count negative.

Once you 'get' a certain ROM, it seems almost easy (though the rest of the ROM is still waiting to be tackled). I also find that I have to concentrate on my destination more than on what my muscles are actually doing (the reps where I tried to outthink my muscles were the ones with less ROM).

I can actually foresee beiing able to do full chin-ups by mid-summer (then I'll have to work on reps in succession! Right now, I'm doing more like 5 "1-rep sets")

Kathryn-

Congrats on your progress. Maybe I need to put my clothes drying rack next the the smith machine for extra encouragement. Heaven knows I do enough laundry to visit it often.

I agree about the non-exercisers not understanding. If I told most of my family and friends about the chinup negatives, etc. I'd just receive blank stares and comments that would irritate me.

It really felt easy yesterday when I did those negatives and I actually feel hopeful for the first time in this chinup effort. I haven't gotten the nerve to attempt to pull up from a dead hang for fear of totally deflating myself, but may soon try.

And HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all the chinny moms hanging tough out there.:)

Kathryn, you are so there!! Once I got to that point it was no time before I could do one. It was within a week. So there's a challenge. I challenge you to do one full before the weeks up }( }(

Oh and thanks for your concern about my knee. It really is minor at this point. I am just so aware of my body and careful when I notice something different.

I hope all had a good mothers day. We took my mom to the races and she won $500.00    What a good day for her!!

No chins for me today. Did IMAX 3 step only x2 (to equal 1 hr). I seem to be really trending toward cardio these days. Anyone else do that after a P90X rotation? It's like I'm craving it.

Kathryn, I am FLOORED!!! That is unbelievably great! I agree with Catherine that you'll be there before the week's out. If not, then definitely before the end of the month. What an accomplishment!

Melody, your post about the negs getting easier along with Kathryn's "nose-up" has given me hope. Although I've moved backward because of a very minor injury (the negs are much harder for me now), I now have more faith that if I keep persevering, I just might get there.

Hey, why don't we start a "nose-up" check-in? (Eyebrow-up?)

You guys are doing SO great!! Injury does set one back. I did chins tonight throughout MM and started with a set of 7, then a neg. pullup - 10 sec descent, set of 6, then more negatives at 10 second descents. I was tired. My diet has changed drastically and I was working out at 1am, maybe this had something to do with it, but the back injury has definitely slowed progress. I'm NOT going to get discouraged. You guys keep me going!! :7 :7 :7 Soosan, don't get discouraged. Ease back into it and keep checking in. I had setbacks this week, but if it wasn't for you all, I would have moved on to something else by now (or nothing else!!)
