chin up check-in 07/26

Briee and Melody, I think it's great you both homeschool and I'm sure you have wonderful kids. I live in a small, rural community and have many friends who homeschool. As a former high school teacher, I thought about doing it myself but felt there were many benefits that school provides that I couldn't. Homeschooling has benefits you can't get in school, but for my family, sending them to school was the better choice. I agree that teens don't have to be the monsters the media makes them out to be (and I, personally, don't know any), but sending them to school doesn't necessarily encourage them to be that way. For the most part, if kids come from a loving home environment where parents set limits and enforce them, most teenagers are fine, regardless of their peer influence. It's common sense, but statistics show that kids whose parents are interested and involved in their education do better in school, whether or not they're homeschooled. All homeschooling parents have this interest in common since they are obviously involved in their kids' education!

I had MM on the plate today, but I'm also taking an unplanned rest day, although I may squeeze in a bit of cardio and ab work later. I don't know if I tweaked my upper back/neck doing chins yesterday or if I overdid the power yoga, but I'm pretty sore (not in a good way) today. I always do push-ups between up and down dog (a la Bryan Kest), so maybe I tweaked something doing those. I won't be able to work out tomorrow or Sunday either, and Sunday I leave for NJ to visit my parents. (Nothing buy yoga and Pilates there!)

Last time I did P90X, I made strength gains (particularly in my core), but did not increase my size as I was hoping. I didn't have a pull-up bar at the time, so I subbed pullovers, etc for back work. My push-up count did increase, but I'll never be a push-up monster like Catherine, Briee and HB. Maybe I'll do better with a pull-up bar. I may start before September once I'm back, because my summer might have slowed down by then.

Sooosan,

Did you think that Briee and I meant children who were not homeschooled were horrible teens? Oh no, that was not the intention at all. My oldest, who was not homeschooled, was not a monster, but a teen who went through a rebellious teen stage for a couple of years. I was very involved in his schooling also, and he is a wonderful young man. I believe every parent makes choices based on their own circumstances, as they should. I can't send a bipolar and autistic child to public school in confidence; they'd never receive the individual attention I can give them at home. Above all, having the freedom to teach my sons in harmony with our Christian beliefs is by far my strongest reason for homeschooling.

I'm sorry if my post regarding homeschooling and my past experiences and my expected future experiences with the boys was misunderstood.

Take care:)

Oh Mel...I reread my post and you have NOTHING to apologize for for. It's generally me who must apologize - okay usually on top of generally and almost always - as my mouth gets me into trouble all the time!!

This is one of those DEEP subjects that I would need to invest much time in to fully explain my position. You are right Susan, the more involvement a parent has with their children educationally and otherwise is a very important factor. My brother's kids are in a private school (not religiously based) and are great kids due to their parents strong involvement in every area of their lives. Sounds like you are in a great place to raise children as well. I've heard of horror stories as well with homeschooled children. So sorry I made it sound as if homeschooling is the only way. You've got to do what is best for your situation and you can work through either situation wisely. We did choose homeschooling as Melody stated because we can teach our children in a way that is consistent with our Christian belief's, but also from watching/studying the children of other homeschoolers vs. public schooled children. There is a difference when peer pressure enters in. Some will see this from either stand point - can be good or bad. I had parents who were very involved in our education and I still valued my peers influence more than my parents in most areas unfortunately.

Probably the biggest reason we homeschooled though, was seeing the relationships of homeschooled children with their parents vs public school children with their parents. There are many exceptions, but when I read the post in the open forum, they sounded like reruns of parents we know who have their kids in public school. Again, there are exceptions, many exceptions. Conversely, we know of homeschooled families that have "other" kinds of problems. Nothing is perfect and there are always exceptions. Sounds like for you Soosan, you live in a wonderful area with supportive parents who can safely send their kids to public school. In our area that is not the norm, so we are homeschooling. Many choices, many decisions and we all must choose what works for us. There is never one way. But for us...this is the way and I'm thankful that we have the opportunity to make these choices.

What is REALLY happening here Sooooooooooooosan is that you are an exceptional person and your kids are blessed to have you for a mom!! Again...I'm sorry for being offensive.

Briee (have I ever told you that Yoga is slightly distasteful to me, but I know of wonderful, incredible people who have made the choice to practise this and they are really cool people with awesome delts - but for the life of me I can't understand how this can happen - well....same thing:p :p )

Melody and Briee, I was not offended by either of your lovely posts, nor did I think you were both asserting that homeschooling is the ONLY way to avoid negative peer pressure and rocky teen years. I was just chiming in on an interesting conversation, giving the perspective of my non-homeschooled family, and if we had been talking about it in person, there probably wouldn't have been this misunderstanding. I totally agree that each family should choose based on their own situation and philosophy. The love you both have for your children and the fun you have with your families shines through in your posts. They make me want to bring my family and hang out for a few days. (Wow, I guess I'm expanding on my go-where-you-go-on-vacation idea.:)) Oh, and BTW, my kids attend a private school, but my oldest will be attending a public high school next year.

The main thing is that everyone continues to do yoga.:)

What insightful posts. I do not have children, but I enjoy reading your posts about yours and love hearing that there are parents who are truly involved in their children's lives.

Yoga and awesome delts huh? Hmmmmmmmmmmm,... I am doing PY4Y today magically hips (I think that's what it's called)

Soooooooooooosan, back to your comment about making strength gains but not size with P90X. I have the same outcome. For me though it's because I cannot eat above maintenance and stay clean. In order to gain muscle you must eat squeaky clean and eat more calories than you burn. I have no problem eating more calories than I burn, it's just the quality of those calories is not what I need x( I am in a position where I can not afford to lose wt and would like to put on muscle but also lose some fat. But I just haven't ever gotten disciplined enough to do it. I guess I just love to eat (the wrong things)!!

Hi Briee and Sooosan, thanks for your posts.:*

Catherine, so I am going to have MORE trouble gaining any muscle size and keeping weight on with P90X? I'm confused now. This is already a major challenge for me.

Signing out as Ms. Completely-Grumpy-Not-Good-Company-Today (I'll go work on turning this frown upside down;( )

Melody, let me explain. I gained lots of definition with P90X. But would really like to increase my muscle size. This is hard for women to do esp without the appropriate nutrition plan. To gain, you must eat quality foods (clean) and eat more calories than you burn (above maintenance). I have a hard time eating so much- good food that is. P90X classic rotation is for building strength and muscle size, not so much for wt loss. There is a doubles rotation and a lean rotation that are (I think) more geared toward leaning out or getting rid of fat. I hope this makes sense.

Please do go turn your frown upside down. Don't like for people to be grumpy. I was right there with ya a little bit ago. Went too long without eating.

I eat constantly, and mostly good. When I do a GS each w/o 1/xwk, including cardio, abs and yoga and one addtional heavy full body weight w/o -- I am starved all the time. I eat all the time. I am finally showing a little muscle gain. Even DH mentioned my arms, shoulders and back (this is great as usually men comment on the butt and legs only). So I'm with you and may not be able to eat enough good stuff with P90X. Oh well, I know how to w/o AND eat right, but can I eat enough? Oh, am thinking, am thinking.;-)

I did magically hips today. I have to say I really am liking this one. I really have major hip flexability issues and I think this will do wonderful things for me.

Tomorrow I start Phase II of P90X with Chest Shoulders and Triceps. I've not done chins since Wed and even that was just 4 and ~2/3s. Since it was recovery week, I was trying to respect that. I hope I don't pay for it dearly. This phase has back and biceps together and that is hard to do chins intermingled with bicep work!!

Catherine,

What on Earth is "magically hips", please?

Good luck on that back/bi/chins combo. I've had to start separating the GS BSB into a day of Back/Bi and then shoulders day. And I'm pleased to hear that you are taking your recovery week seriously.

I may not be back tonight, so have a good evening all.

Our computers been downx( and I finally got a chance to get back on to see Soosan's >the main thing is that everyone continues to do Yoga> post. I'm ROTFLOL and want to add that I love you guys too and would also love to go hang out and eat donuts with ya all right about now!!!:7 :7 :7 .

RE P90X: I believe one must eat VERY correctly to gain muscle, but it can be done. I did the P90X for about 15 months and gained muscle (subbed certain things as stated in last post). I defined my delts a bit, but want to continue to add muscle in this area - I WANT BIGGER DELTS (any ideas short of yoga would be appreciated). I think I got a little burned out, but I'm ready to make a go of it again.

I just want to say that I worked out everyday this week. This summer has been so incredibly crazy that this is a big achievement for me right now. I'm hoping that I can stick with a P90X rotation and not loose my mind. I can't take rest days...when I do...I loose it. You guys help me not to loose it completely!! Even this yoga infested thread :p :p :p . Hey Soosan...I did MM yesterday - I thought of you :7 :7
