chin-up check in 07/18

HI everyone.

I'm here feeling guilty for cracking the yoga whip as I have been skimping on yoga recently:eek: I promise to do BSB, chin negatives and yoga later today.

Ok, Joanne, Sooosan, and Janie, we've got to hang in there (pun intended) on our chinups. Catherine will be pulling out the chinup whip before we know it.

Off to get dressed and drive into town to meet my gang for lunch.

I never should have told Catherine about bestsmileys:p :+

Well, I completed my BSB w/o about 10:15p. Hate those late w/o's.
I pulled up about 2" again 2x from a dead hang and did my 3 sets of chin negatives and 1 of wide grip negatives.

*tiny voice* I didn't do yoga.

Bye now.

OK I finally did some Yoga. I think the reason I have a hard time doing yoga is because I'm not very good at it. I like doing things I'm good at :) And I usually will only "work" on one thing at a time. Right now my mental effort is going to working on pullups. I know I am rationalizing and there's no reason for me not to just do what I can. So I did PY4Y 40 min today. And I feel better.

Man...I go away for a brief moment and return to find the chin up thread has evolved into (gasp - how can I say this) a YOGA THREAD.

How could this happen.....well...it won't happen again, get your minds back to CHINS!!!!

Whew....now that that's over...camping was a fun time, but I have an observation. When people get to the 30-40ish and beyond stage...they stop doing much of anything other than sitting around and visiting. This must change. I had a blast swimming with kids and doing various other campy type stuff, but the highlight of the week was climbing the "tower". They had a climbing wall and once you get to the top you get to dive into the open air attached to a 500 ft. zip line by cable - major rush - very fun. My regret is that we didn't do it every day. It was one brief evening - I want to go back and do that full time.

Since returning to camp, one child had their tonsils out and we all caught a cough, cold, yucky bug and workouts are not happening. Oh...I did waterski for 2 solid days. This was more fun that turbo jams or Imax II. ALSO..I did several days of chins at camp and found a monkey bars at the lake where we skiied and did pullups between the bars, which I might add.....I LOVE THE HAND PLACEMENT OF MONKEY BARS. Palms face each other and you pull your head up in between the bars - wow these are much easier. Try them sometime!!

Glad you are all keeping the chin up thread going (just beware of that Yoga-thing creeping in - very dangerous - VERY DANGEROUS) !!! I have a busy few days ahead and hopefully can check in every so often. Catherine...I need to join you in P90X land - I've been feeling lazy being sick, yucky and all!!

Briee

Briee, sounds like you had a blast at camp!! The wall sounds like fun. So did ya motivate any of those 30-40ish to get off their behinds and do something active and fun??

Sorry to hear things fell apart afterwards. Hope all are feeling better.

No this isn't turning into a yoga thread. We just had a little yoga discussion :p We are all doing our chinups. Although I wasn't sure about the rest there for a while it seemed I was the only one doing them!!! Everyone seems to use this thing called "vacation" as an excuse. Can you believe that.

Did you see that Melody can pull up 2 inches from a dead hang? That's exciting progress!!!

No...thank you for pointing that out!!! CONGRATS MELODY!! You'll get higher and higher...you go girl!!!

I don't know if I was motivating or not, but I am so thankful that I can "do" what I want to do regarding fitness. Out of about 100 adults...I was one of three that climbed the wall (the only female). There was a REALLY cool lady there that is about 68 and she was doing the certified checks for all climbers prior to climbing. I told her "you look like a 20 year old with all your gear on and your happy smile and energetic nature". I want to be like her at that age. (she climbs the wall!!). Most won't even try. I'd go crazy becoming nonactive....absolutely, totally, completely insane. Everyone here on Cathe's site is to be commended for all their hard work, you are not the norm!!! AND you are lots happier than the norm.

Now....somehow I've got to get in an exercise routine (after I get through this yucko stage - I looked at my throat in the mirror with a flashlight and it's white, red and blood tinged - gross huh!).

Catherine...you're right....vacation is no excuse not to work out. I've gotta share with you, we did a turbo jam class at camp and 2 other ladies joined me. About 1/2 the way through the "foundation training girls - teens) wandered in and joined us for a while. This made the workout even beyond fun...just the energy in the room could carry you through the workout. They were so much fun!!!!

Briee

Ha ha, I couldn't resist. Glad to have your funny, energetic self back with us, Briee. We missed you!

I hear you re adults of a certain age just sitting around. We Cathe-ites are definitely not the norm. I want to be like that 68-yr-old woman too. She must do yoga.:p I don't know if I would've climbed that rock wall and zipped down, though. I climbed a rock wall at a retreat last year, scampering up no with problem, but once I got to a certain height, my legs started shaking uncontrollably and I just wanted to get down. I've always been afraid of heights, and even though I was harnassed in, I psychologically couldn't get over that fear. I hated every minute I was up there.

No negs at all for me since before I left for Maine, just some lame attempts from a dead hang, but I have been exercising every day and fitting in a lot of yoga. I'm really big on listening to my body and doing what I think it needs and it's telling me not to do chins for some reason. Maybe it's what Catherine said about doing things you're good at. Chins definitely do not fall into that category for me.x( I did KPC CC drills and abs followed by the second half of Yoga X. Tomorrow's a power yoga day and then rest on Sunday. I promise to do negs on Monday.:)

Briee-Glad to hear you had a nice vacation. I, too, hear ya about us Cathe-ites not being the norm. I go crazy just sitting around. I am for sure going to still be riding my bike until the day I die.

Sooooosan-I'm not real good at the names of the yoga positions but the one of them that gets me is the Warrior pose when we hold it for ever. No wonder you can do the splits.

Joanne

Soooooooooooooosan...you know I just love to rib you regarding yoga. A while back I saw an add from a personal trainer at the pool in a nearby town. I emailed her regarding delt building exercises and she mentioned that she has a large demand for yoga in Viroqua, WI (an extremely "alternative" community). I told her that those Viroquan's have not yet had an out of body experience until they have done endless low end squats with a 50# bar on their shoulders and unless they get some weights into their life they will just up and float away one day. }( }( }( . CAN YOU BELIEVE SHE NEVER EMAILED ME BACK! The nerve:p :p . (no matter..she probably has whimpy delts).

Okay so on to confessions...I'm REALLY just jealous that you can hold those incredible poses so long and I have exactly zero tolerance for this calmly "endured pain". You're really amazing Soosan...so keep up the good work....BUT DO THOSE NEGATIVES. Calmly...breathing throughout. Feeeeel zee barrrr, beeee oneeeee with zee barrrrr. (that was Brian Kest if you were wondering).

Joanne.....we shall bike together in our old age with our grey hair flowing in the wind. What a beautiful vision.;) ;)

Catherine...come on, you KNOW you want to do chins again!!

Hey Melody. Been to the ER lately? I was quite proud of myself strolling through the ER with my ds for his tonsillectomy. I stated "this visit was planned, and I'm just passing through for the day surgery department. Carry on guys (and nice to see you again)."

Briee

Brieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've missed you. Are you guys all healthy yet?

No ER for us lately, just scheduled DR appts. Got back from Atlanta late tonite and can't sleep. I so love your posts, stay home for a while and type to us.

YES!! I've moved upward 2". BTW I can hold yoga poses FOREVER...:p We all have our strengths, chins just aren't mine...yet...or pushups...but I can squat, do corework, yoga and cardio endlessly.

Why am I here? Oh yeah, can't sleep, again.

Have to go back to Atlanta tomorrow, darn it. The one hour glasses are taking overnight.x(

Going to attempt sleep...I think...maybe...perhaps...:+

Joanne, if you're having trouble staying in Warrior for the "full" amount (i.e., whatever the instructor happens to be doing), straighten that bent leg a bit until it feels better and hold it there. The main thing is that you try to keep your breath fluid and calm (not easy, but what should be your main focus). Don't think the pose has to look a certain way; just go by how it feels. It should feel good but a little uncomfortable in some poses. I think a big reason people don't like yoga (esp fit beginners), is that they think they should look exactly like the instructor/background exercisers.

Catherine, you've got the right idea. Just do what you can do.

Briee, the yoga spin on this thread will not die!}( I'm glad you were able to ostracize another yoga-enthusiast with your e-mail.:p I do have to say, though, that MY delts are looking pretty buff (well, buff for me), after this two-week yoga focus, so there.:+ And your Bryan Kest imitation sounded just like him.

Melody, sorry you couldn't sleep last night. Maybe you should have done some yoga before bed.:) :)

Sooooooosan-Thanks for the Yoga tips. You are right, I was trying to look like the gals on TV.

I did a 5K race this morning. My first race and it went well (I've done fun runs). I know it was only a 5K but it felt good to run out of my comfort zone (plus I can't run much more than 3 miles at this point but I would like to try a 10K someday).

Melody-hope you got some sleep.

Briee-The St. Paul Classic bike ride is September 10th. It is really fun-you should do it. It is only about 30 miles and there is about 6500 riders.

Joanne

Well, I am officially a chinup slacker today. As many of you read in the open forum, our house was vandalized by graffiti sometime last night. So my day started off oh so lovely!! Frankly, I just couldn't handle mentally doing legs and back today. So I did do some (dare I say it) yoga PY4Y Daily Dose of Bliss. It was just what I needed. This time I really tried to focus on my breathing instead of going deep into the poses and it made it so much more enjoyable.

Now, what to do. Do I blow off today's workout. Tomorrow is supposed to be week 4 and day 1 of recovery week which means yoga again. I may try to fit in both. But my nieces B-day party is tomorrow. Maybe I'll do my chins and then do the yoga. Oh well!!

How's everyone else doing?

Catherine
