::: Cheetah:::Runners Monday 10/2

Good morning, Judy, and all other cheetahs!

Judy :: How was parents' visitation weekend?

I'm up early (on a day off) to get cookin' on a bunch of schoolwork but thought I'd bum around a little first. :) I think I feel good enough to get in a workout again today - probably just weights - but will hold off til the afternoon.

Hope everyone has a great Monday! Will stop in again later to catch up.
Cathy :)

I was MIA for a few days but kept up workingout. We had a visit with our oldest two kids at their schools. It was so nice to visit with them. They really liked all the meals out!!!

Jes- I read about your Grandma and am praying for her

Elaine- I am thinking of you too this week as you prepare for your race

Susan- I know some weeks I don't run as far as I think I should, but then I do other WO too. Life is short and balancing can be tricky to say the least.

Barb- Are recovery weeks planned in your rotations regularly?

Carole- Your day sounded nice yesterday. I thought of you when we finally got home to relax and watch football, I was folding laundry :7

I found that I really don't tolerate running 7 miles on sidewalk after running around Boston last week. (too many old aches and pains returned) In fact the next two days I jumped on the elliptical in the hotel instead.

Yesterday was Boot Camp and I have a few DOMS in my behind so today will be a 4 mile run and some easy floor legs and a long stretch. My plan for this week will be running/legs M&W, UB/cardio non-running T&TH and run only on Friday.

Wendy- How was the GTG?? The picture was nice to see. Robin looks the same as when we met. You all look beautiful.

Hi to christine, and all that I missed. and Laurie, how did the race go???

ETA- Hi Cathy! I just read your post :7

good morning to all,

jess and linda, my time wasnt as good as my last half marathon , I knew it wouldnt because I had just decided two weeks before hand to run it and I havent ran much higher mileage except for off and on the last 6 weeks. I havent ran 13 miles since may because of the bronchitis thing knocking out of the loop for over 3 months and all. anyway, I did great the first 6.5 miles ,no problem but then I got fatigued. I definately went out way too fast, for me anyway, the first two miles I ran in 17:30, I normally dont run a half that pace. But my first half I ran in around 50 minutes but then the second half I walked/ran it, I could tell I didnt train my body to go that distance in quite awhile, needless to say I was going to finish , I finished in 2hrs 10minutes. I thought not bad for walk/running the whole 2nd half. I told my husband to remind me next time to train at least 8 weeks or something before doing something like that again. My whole body ached and I was on a heating pad for my back almost he rest of the day. I felt okay yesterday but looked like I rode a horse after getting up from sitting a prolonged amount of time. My SIL got her thrill she came in 2hrs 2minutes, so she beat all of us again, she was happy. I was running the first 2 miles or so with her and told her to go ahead that I wasnt worried about it because I didnt train for it like her. I just ran it to run, because I love to run. To me this wasnt a true half marathon because they didnt give medals to all runners, just the ones that placed in there age group. but it was a small half in vermillion. We had to run along route 6 and there was traffic everywhere and then we had to run in this neighborhood where the roads where awful. they where so tore up and bumpy and the last 1.5 miles you had to run on the sidewalk. anyway, I finished and I will definately train before I do that again at least longer than 2 weeks before hand!! That makes 3 half marathons for me this year alone, 5 total in all. I hope laurie had a better day, it was crappy on saturday!! cant wait to hear how she did!!!!!
I do however feel that the elliptical has helped with my speed, if it would have been a 5k or 10k I think I might have set a new PR,not for sure but I feel that my leg turnover is faster.

talk with you all later!!

Hi cheetahs--
It's Monday...

Laura--glad you feel good overall about understanding how your half went. Sorry about the pain afterwards. How did you pick heat vs. ice? I'm always curious about that. Sometimes I have felt one works better than the other.

Laurie--how was your race? Where are you??

Judy-- glad you had fun visiting your "big" kids. So nice to do that. I do plan recovery weeks...so for me it's every 4th week, so 3 weeks on and a 4th week lighter with running (meaning shorter long run and less weekly mileage that week) and that has helped me stay uninjured. How's your hip? It's hard to keep up with all the PT work, but worth it if it helps. How's DD feeling about swimming?

Cathy--thanks for the shopping update. I loved hearing about it. Have a good day and week!

Wendy-- loved the GTG pics. Looks like you ladies had fun. You look really beautiful and healthy and fit!!

Hi to the gang checking in later. I've got to get going or I'm going to have ChaosMax at home.

I did PP premix lowerbody this a.m. (2 sets each) and a little walk on the TM and KPC abs . I am planning to use an iClimb on the elliptical tonight and may do 10-15 min. of slideboarding during the day if I can fit it in.

Barb
:) :) :)

barb,

If you have an injury that has inflammation, then you want ice rather than heat. Mine was just for soreness so I went with the heat. I also forgot to mention that I ran with my eye half swollen shut. I somehow scratched the lid underneath and could barely open it that morning and when I did it had major fluid flowing out of it like someone poked you in the eye. I managed to find some of my kids eye drops and put those in the morning of the race and they helped but I looked retarded one eye normal and the other all deformed looking, hope that doesnt show up in the pictures they wher taking.

Hi Ladies:) Thank you all so much for cheering me on yesterday!!! I survived and soaked it all in. What an amazing day!!!

I ran the entire course 2 weeks ago in 2:22:27 and thought that perhaps I could shave that down a bit some but it wasn't to be and I'm so very fine with that. I ran it in 2:27:14, not bad for a 44 y.o. who up until May had only run 5K less than a handful of times in her lifetime ;-) I suspect my waining cold, lack of sleep this week and going to a wedding the night before the race affected my results.

I woke before the alarm yesterday at 5:40, had a coffee and breakfast and headed to Belleville to my running buddy Ruth's place 45 minutes away so that we could drive to the event together. We talked about taking it easy at the start but, man!! that was much harder than I thought it would be, so much anticipation and energy at the start!! Once we made our way to the start line we had about 45 minutes before the gun to socialise (I was surprised at how many people I knew and it was festive and fun) I had a pre-event massage and when I came out of the tent they announced that the lead marathoners were about to come through, we gathered to cheer them, it was such a beautiful sight and I shed some quiet tears as I watched them breeze through. Then it was our turn, they called us to the start and before I knew it I was running with a wave of human energy the likes of which I have never felt before. The first leg of the race is gorgeous, smells of pine and cedar and the glory of the fall colours everywhere. Once I broke a sweat it was a fabulous start. We rounded a curve and ran along Lake Ontario Sandbanks and I was moved beyond words. My husband, 3 kids and I spent countless days at these beaches during his last year and a half with us (when he was in his words 'retired with children'). I felt him with me as the wind surrounded and cooled me and felt so grateful to have lived in his light. I was struck by the fact that had cancer not claimed his health I would never have seen my own health for the gift that it truly is. I choked up and it was hard to breathe so I shifted my focus and chatted with Ruth a bit. We could see the ears of the 2:20 pace bunny ahead of us and both thought it would be a good idea to stay close to that group. Well, the group cleared to reveal the rest of the pace bunny's fine physiqe and what a posterior physique it was!!!! We had some silly fun enjoying the view and fine form and stuck with them for quite a while. I will say the first 13k of the run felt wonderful! Having the water stations every 2k really helped and the bell ringing, cheering spectators warmed my heart! Ruth started to pull ahead and I wished her well. I realised that I had started too strong and began taking walk breaks. About 2k before the finish the streets were lined and I joked with some people and had a lot of fun. Running through downtown Picton I felt like a superstar to hear all of the cheering, I was running out of gas and it showed, I never would have guessed that strangers looking me in the eye and saying 'You can do this', 'You're doing GREAT',...could mean so much!! I saw the finish line about 750m away and knew that my Girls and my Mom would be there, I thought 'I'll walk one more time so I can sprint', I started to walk and an angel of an older gentleman said 'keep running Girl, I want to walk too!' I smiled and picked up the pace and said 'I'll run behind you' and he said 'No, I'm running with you, I've got lots of friends behind me pushing me to finish'. Then I saw my 3 Girls on the sidelines running toward me and started to feel a wave of emotion. They were so beautiful, proud and LOUD!! I sprinted for, maybe 5 strides then started to cry (a HAPPY cry), the whole experience of the past 4 months and so many other things welled up in me and I couldn't hold it back. I finished upright and smiling on the inside but was crying the UGLY cry on the outside:D I felt so incredible I can't describe it. My running Angel came and gave me a huge hug and then I was off to find the Girls and Mom. It was such a fabulous day and experience and I am humbled to have been a part of it. It's an awesome thing, my training was predominantly solitary but yesterday I felt like I was part of something so big, positive and affirming. LIFE IS GOOD!!!

Take Care
Laurie

G'morning Cheetahs!! I've decided that lack of running messes w/ my sleep schedule!! I've been waking up a ton this past week, I guess I don't need as much sleep when I'm not running! I've been trying to *rest* but now I'm done resting!!! }( I've got some DOMS in my glutes from L & G y'day, but I loved it!! I'm definitely looking forward to doing that one again!

I'm trying to hold off on a run until tomorrow. I want to make sure my knee is ALL better, so far no pain since Fri so that's good!

Not too much going on here today. The weather really warmed up this weekend & even hit 80 y'day! I think Allison & I will go for a walk this morning.

OK, I have a little time for some personals so I'll post them in a bit!

Just a quick hello to all you Cheetahs.

Laurie, What a neat account of your race. My eyes were tearing up. Great job.

Cathy ~ Enjoy your day off from school & your workout! My girls are off on Fri for teacher's institute & Mon for Columbus day. They're excited about a 4 day weekend!! ;-)

Judy ~ I'm sure you enjoyed the time w/ your kids! How are they doing in school? Thank you so much for the prayers for my Grandma. The Dr. told my Mom y'day that she probably only has a few days left. Her kidneys are really starting to fail. My Mom is getting pretty worn out, she & her brother & sister are taking turns spending the night w/ her as she is afraid of dying while she's alone. My brothers are both trying to make arrangements to make it here by Friday so at least I will be happy to see them. I loooove my brothers, we're all so close.

Laura ~ Thanks for the report! I think you did great. Do you have any other races coming up? Sounds like you need to do a 5K for a PR!! And ouch on the eye!! I had to have stitches in my eyelid after a car accident, it was NOT pretty!

Laurie ~ You got me all teared up reading your report. You did it!!! I'm so proud of you. And your girls sound like they were so proud of you too. I love coming to the finish line & seeing my family cheering me on, there's just NOTHING like it. The crowd definitely helps push you along, doesn't it?? Life is definitely good & we have a lot to be thankful for.

Barb ~ I use ice for inflammation (tendons, feet, knees, etc) & heat for just general sore muscles. Sounds like you have a good plan for recovery weeks, I need to do that more often.

Wendy ~ Loved the GTG pics, you are so cute!! How tall are you? You just look tiny in those pics! I'm sure you ladies had a blast!

Carole ~ Good job on the run y'day! I want to keep my weekend mileage around 8-10 just to keep a good base mileage up. How was football??

Jennifer ~ Let me know if you find the pumpkin & make the bread! I usually have to make a double batch for my family around here!

Susan ~ You're funny in your impatience to clean the DVD that you had to hop on the treadmill!! Had to get in that mileage, didn't ya???? :p

Linda ~ Good job on MM & the run outdoors. I love running outdoors, even in the winter. It's hard when you first step out the door, but then there's nothing like that cold, crisp air. And warming up w/ a good cup of coffee afterwards always keeps me going!! ;-)

Christine ~ How was the festival y'day? Did you enjoy your day? Are you feeling psyched up for your upcoming race????

Elaine ~ I get tummy issues sometimes too (I have IBS) & it's not fun to try to run through it! I'm excited to hear about your marathon!!! Try to rest up this week!

Karen ~ Good morning!

Ok, I'd better get moving. I'm sure I've forgotten people & I'm sorry!!

Oh yeah, I posted some of the professional marathon pics in my picture trail http://www.picturetrail.com/jess_jugs (I took it off my siggy line w/ all of the weirdness going on around here). They're really small, but I think I will order a couple.

Good Morning Cheetahs. I have been following this group for weeks now and you guys are so inspirational in your runs, workouts and your support. I just can't help but posting.

My name is Kim and I live in The Bahamas. I am currently in the first stages of training for my first half marathon (ING Miami). I come here everyday for tips and ideas on what to do.

Jess, congrats on your first marathon.

Laurie, you had me tearing up at my desk on your account of the half.

Laura, I guess all can't be PR's. You ran the best for your right now and I guess that's what counts.

I can't remember all the names right now but just wanted to come out of lurkdom and mingle with the Cheetahs.

Kim

Laurie, What can I say? How about "Thank you for sharing your wonderful story"? I can relate somewhat and also revel in and cherish the beauty of life and good health. Good job!

Checking in real quick. I'll run 3 miles today, stretch real good then spend the day with my brother since DH is off work today and will be able to drop off/pick up the kids. Hoping you all have an awesome day with fabulous workouts!

Hiya Kim! I'm glad you came out of lurkdom!! Congrats on training for your first half marathon!! I just love the half marathon distance. Now that I've done a full marathon, I just want to work on getting faster for the shorter distances.

Let us know if you have any training questions. Are you training w/ a friend, group, or on your own?? Good luck!

Good Morning Ladies !

Well, the festival would have been fun, but it RAINED! We typically don’t get rain this early in the year, so no one was prepared. We ended up leaving early as we were chilly. But it was a good time. Unfortunately the KickBox class was cancelled, so I did 40 minutes of elliptical, but I actually managed the whole yoga class without feeling antsy yesterday! Highly unusual for me. I like the instructor and I’m going to take his class again on Friday before the Half. Today is an easy 3 mile run and probably Core Synergistics. My goal this week before my half is to alternate easy runs with elliptical training, and do lots of yoga and core work.

SORRY LAURA!!! I missed your Half! I’m SOOOO SORRY!! WAY TO GO!!!! Sounds like you did well, especially considering the conditions! Glad you’re happy with your time. It is good to hear that the elliptical has helped! Thanks! And great job at running this Half!! 3 Halfs this year? WOW!!!

Laurie – WAY TO GO!!! Not bad at all for a 44 yo! What a great story! You had me in tears! Life IS Good!! ^5!!

Cathy – glad you’re feeling better! Hope you have a great workout this afternoon.

Judy – Sounds like you had great visits with your kids! How wonderful!!

Barb – I do recovery weeks, too – actually – P90X taught me the importance. Hope you avoided the ChaosMax!

Jess – my body gets so used to hard exercise and I sleep so hard with it, that when I don’t get it, I don’t sleep as well either. Glad your knee is feeling better!! I am very excited about my up coming race, but it feels really weird to be taking it easy this week. I’ll be spending more time on long, slow workouts like yoga!

Wendy – LOVED the photos of the GTG! Sounds like a blast to meet everyone!

Hi Kim! Welcome!! Come on and join us! We have all levels of runners! We’re happy to have you here!

Elaine! Good to see you! Hope your brother is doing better!

Hi Sunny!! Have fun with ErrandMax! I know it well!!

Thanks for the welcome all. Jess in answer to your question, I am training by myself right now as I haven't found anyone who is willing to do so with me. DH goes on the shorter distances with me especially if it is after school as it is getting darker outside (I do school after work). He claims to by my bodyguard and I am grateful for the company.

Currently I run 4 days a week; tuesday after class, thursday before class, saturday morning and sunday morning. Saturday is an easy run as sunday is my long run.

I definitely will be asking question when I get a chance to as I'm at work right now and not alot of time to chat.

Thanks again for welcoming me.

Kim

back for a minute of personals-

Laura- So you didn;t PR, but you did well!!! I don't know if I could do it at all. I am proud of you.

Laurie- Goodness I had no idea about your DH; thanks you for sharoing your expereince. It is posts like your and Lauras from your races that keep me motavited to keep running!

Jes- the sleep effect is interesting. Perhaps your body is in transition?

Barb- Your recovery weeks sound wise. I don't plan them but sometimes they occur by default. My hip is doing well thanks for asking. Yes, I do need to keep up with the PT exercises. I did a few of them post run this morning. I have really come to like the extended stretching after my runs.

Barb- DD is positive about swimming again. She is really liking her new highschool team, and the girls have been very nice about accepting her and eating lunch with her etc. Being in a new school at age 15 is tough, and I am so proud of her for choosing to let us move here and meet the challenge. She is also taking 2 AP classes and working very hard at them. But she makes time to socialize too.

Wendy- did you post GTG pics? I have to go check.

Kim- Welcome to the Cheetah check in. :)

Hi Elaine and Hi Carole and Hi Sunny and Hi Christine

I better get moving here it is clean Max on the first floor today.

Good morning cheetahs

Cathy...hope you get to squeeze in a workout. Is the cold better?

Judy...thats great you got to spend some time with your kids...yes, I did have a nice day yesterday...:)

Laura...I think you did great in the half, especially without the training you had wanted to get in. I think alot of runners go out to fast, and in shorter runs that is usually fine but in longer ones that can really fatigue you! In a marathon going out to fast can completely ruin the whole run. You pulled it out and finished and I think that is something to be proud of!!

Laurie...WOW!! What a wonderful story of your half marathon! I think you did awesome! I am remembering when you messaged me saying you were signing up for this half. it is so cool that there are people that cheer you on and have just the right things to say! I liked your running Angel. I have met people like him in some of my marathons. Great inspirations they are...:)...and to see your girls and Mom at the end...what a great finish for you!! Yes, life is good...

Wendy...I did wonder why you hadn't posted. Then I saw the pics if the GTG!!! I agree with Barb, you look very fit and fabulous. Looks like all of you had fun!!

Barb...I know you might have posted it already but which iClimb are you trying??

Jess...those were good marathon pics. I have a few marathon finishes where they took my picture as I stopped my watch too!...:)...thanks for sharing.

Kim..Welcome! I have always wanted to visit the Bahamas!! Will this be your first half and when is it?

Elaine...enjoy your 3 miles. Just a few more days to go...:)

Christine...I think we might get rain in a few days. Sounds like a good plan for your workouts this week. I think you'll do well in your half!

Linda..thank you for you nice compliment in yesterdays thread...:)

Today I am doing an iClimb on my Elliptical and then S&H Chest, Shoulders and Tri's...abs too!

Also, my nephew John will be coming home on Thurs! My chiro nephew Adam is getting married Sat, so this will be a busy weekend!!

Have a great day...:)

Carole--sounds like you have a busy week. That's great news about John.
I did iClimb 8 on Friday and liked it and am thinking about doing it again or trying #9 tonight (I bought this one, too.) What iClimb are you doing today? At the Precor site, I printed out an advanced elliptical workout -- and it varies how you use the crossramp for segments to work different muscle groups. I may try to do that crossramp variation with iClimb 8 again (e.g. focus on glutes-only) when the incline goes up and try #8 again with tis variation.

Judy-- I'm glad your hip is doing well and that your DD is adjusting so nicely. That's great to hear. I'm still learning about swimming, going step by step. Both of my kids had an in-club meet yesterday, did well, enjoyed it, but many choices lie ahead that I need to get educated about. The parents I am meeting are very nice. It was fun being in the stands.

Elaine-- enjoy the day and week and time with your brother!

Kim -- welcome. It's very cool you live in the Bahamas. Fill us in more on your running as you find the time. I try to run 4 days a week, too. It's nice you can run with your DH.

Sunny- good luck on Errand max. How do you like Jari Love? I am thinking of getting Ripper to the Core.

Laurie-- amazing account. I'm so proud of you, an accomplishment on many levels!

Laura-- ditto on Judy's comments. You did well. That's a lot of halfs to run in a year. You've accomplished a lot.

Jess--good luck this week. I'm sending prayers your way and your family's way. Sometimes, it's hard to tell the difference between tension & inflammation. I'm so glad your knee feels normal again.

Karen-- Hi!

Christine -- too bad about the rain and KB class, but good for you on the elliptical and yoga without ants! So good for you to do yoga. I did Core Synergistics 1x a week before my half and thougt it helped. Your plan for the week sounds good.

have a great day Cheetahs!
-Barb
