Check-In Week Ending 10/28/01

Could not sleep last night so here I am at 5 a.m. twiddling my thumbs in front of the computer, deciding what workout to do today...

Anyway, I have to take a moment and thank Kim for the explanation of that piece in Rhythmic Step that I couldn't get. Kim, it worked! I kept remembering what you said about putting the OTHER foot down first and once I got that down, I now have the whole tape down pat. So, THANK YOU!!!

My week:

Monday: Nada

Tuesday: MIS Upper Body/Abs/Rhythmic Step on 4" step (practiced my "Kim move" and everything worked great!)

Wednesday: PS Lying Down Portion of Leg Work/Abs

Thursday: MIS Upper Body/Rhythmic Step on 6" step (FINALLY was able to go back to my usual step height...have I mentioned that I absolutely LOVE this workout?????)

Friday: Leaner Legs/Abs

Saturday: Colitis acted up so took an unplanned rest day.

Sunday: Thinking about doing Power Hour.

That's it for now.

I was just wondering....Have any of you guys been working out harder than usual lately??? I find that every time I watch the news and hear about the war, anthrax, etc., that my anxiety level just makes me want to work out even harder. Or is it just me and my menopausal stages????

Have a good week, everyone!

Terri

Hi, Terri. I have certainly been feel the anxiety in the world gone mad but this was my week to be unable to get my workouts together! Since I managed to finish off my third week of Slow/Heavy, I decided not to fret about it and to do better in the coming week. Read 'em and weep!

Monday Slow/Heavy Legs and Shoulders
Tuesday Nothing
Wednesday 5.6 mile run and Slow/Heavy Chest and Back
Thursday Nothing
Friday CTX Kickbox and Slow/Heavy Tris and Bis

I only did cardio twice! Oh, well! Hello to everyone! Don't eat too much Halloween candy! Watch out for all the little ghouls and goblins! And have a great week!

RE: Your welcome Terri

The reason I knew about that move so well was that I had to press rewind many times to get it myself.

Here was my week:

Monday - Happy Hour High Low

Tuesday - run in a.m. for 60 minutes

Wednesday - Power Hour

Thursday - Millenium Stretch

Friday - Cardio Kicks (and in response to another post I saw, I can really feel my lats and shoulders the next day after this one and it is a good sore)

Saturday - rest day

Sunday - run or Rhymthic Step. I have been trying to hold off on this tape for a week or so because my calf cramps up funny when I do this workout. I think it is my shoes and am anxiously awaiting my new ones before I do much more step or hi lo stuff.

Have a great week all.

Kim

RE: Your welcome Terri

Kim:
Just curious as to what shoes you're getting for doing step.

I know that for me I was using New Balance for years and realized I just didn't get enough support from them....I tried Ryka's a few months ago and *LOVE* them!

So, just curious as to what kind of sneakers you're getting...

Checking in

I've hit a bump in the fitness road - I've got shingles (a flare up of the chickenpox virus). I woke up last Saturday w/ a small rash on my left ribcage. It continued to spread, my ribcage was sore & I was generally achey. Luckily I saw a Doc on Monday morning & am on a anti-viral drug & a pain killer. The Doc called it right 1) it would get worse, 2) the pain is like a burning match held to the skin & 3) wearing a bra would become impossible. Shingles frequently gets misdiagnosed & if the anti-viral drug isn't started w/in 72 hours of the rash, it's ineffective & the risk of permanent nerve damage goes up. I don't fit the profile of someone at risk for shingles so now I've got to figure out why my immune system was low. I was feeling great.

So my fitness routine is now dog walks (no trots), Pilates, Yoga for Athletes & my stretching tapes. I did Spin at low intensity & did Power Hour 2x (no bra required) but my husband suggested I lay off both for awhile. It's strange but I don't feel "sick". Sleep has been interrupted but in general my energy level is high. Frustrating!

Have a healthy week & listen to your bodies!!!

RE: Rykas

Hi again Terri

I ordered a pair of Re-Alchemys and they should be arriving on Monday or Tuesday. I have been using a Ryka shoe for step, hi lo and kickboxing for quite some time now. They are hard to come by in stores though but I have found a dependable source to order from.

I live in Canada and so ordering from any web sites in the US is just way too onerous in the cash department. As I have vented about before, I can live with the exchange, which in itself is pretty horrendous, but the duty on top of that is stupid.

RE: Checking in

Debra: I'm so sorry to hear about the shingles. I know how you feel right now....I had a case of shingles when I was in my 20's. I originally thought I had a rash to a new bra that I had bought (stupid me!)....at that time (which was 20 years ago) the doctor said there was nothing he could give me but did in fact tell me to take extra B-12.

I went without a bra for like 3 months and wore VERY loose clothing (it hurt just to have clothes rub up against the area). Took alot of Tylenol. I could only sleep on one side of the bed so the other side of my shoulder/back area could "hang off" the other side. But, like you said, my energy level was fine....still exercised though nothing high impact (because of the no bra situation!).

Now that I think back, I WAS very run down....I was going through a breakup with a long-time boyfriend, living on my own, finances were bad....

For years afterwards, if I was going through a bad time healthwise in my life, I would get "achy" in that same particular area....very strange.

Anyway, just know that this will pass. Hopefully the drug the doctor gave you will kick in and possibly make it not last as long.

Feel better.

Terri

I did it!

Debra--I'm so sorry to hear about the shingles. Hope it clears up quickly and that you get enough rest for it to do so.

Sunday: 3.5 mile walk/run; MIS Upper Body
Monday: .75 mi hike with pack on Pawnee National Grassland
Tuesday:.75 mi hike with pack, 2.5 mi hike around Pawnee Buttes in gale force wind--just standing up was a challenge
Wednesday: Rhythmic Step, w/u secs. 1 & 3, Step Works c/d
Thursday: 40 min. walk/run
Friday: rest
Saturday: 3 mile walk through corn mazes
Sunday: 5K race (my very first one ever!)

I ran every step of the Girl Scouts' 5K today! http://www.plauder-smilies.de/bounce/1syellow1.gif And my recovering calf didn't complain too much until this afternoon. I finished at 35:18, a minute behind the first place age 6 & under finisher. http://www.plauder-smilies.de/sad/schmoll2.gif I think next year I'll advance my goal from running the entire thing, to running faster than all the six-year-olds. :D It was a pretty crazy race with all those Girl Scouts. Most of them were using the "sprint/flail and walk/complain" technique, which I'm not sure I would recommend to adults.

Have a good week, everybody!

Thanks Terri

Hopefully the anti-viral drug will prevent the long-term lingering affects you have had. I posted in case others were as uninformed as I was about the condition. I don't think I'm run down (just the opposite) nor am I in a stressful situation, so I'm perplexed as to why this hit me. I'm actually feeling pretty darn good but I'm being quite restrained.

Thanks for your post.

Congratulations!

Don't most females continue running with the sprint & flail technique? We just learn to be more subtle with our whining! Maybe I just hang with the wrong crowd.

But congratulations!!! Hope the calf doesn't take revenge this week.

Where are the Pawnee Grasslands? Lots of birds now?

Debra

RE: Rykas

Kim,

Would you mind sharing where you're ordering your Rykas from. I'd like to order a pair but as you said, when you live in Canada the exchange and duty sure add up. Also, did you order the same size you normally wear or do they fit differently.
thanks

Pawnee Grasslands

The Pawnee National Grassland is in northeastern Colorado. Not too terribly many birds this time of year, as they're pretty much done with their migrations. There was plenty of coyote action--they serenaded us all night.

Both of my calves are pretty sore this morning. With shoes on, I can almost walk. I think it was that the entire race was on asphalt more than anything. I'm following my running friend's advice and staying on dirt and grass from now on.

RE: Rykas

Paulette: I just wanted to mention that I've heard most people have to get like a 1/2 size larger for Rykas than what they normally wear. HOWEVER, I normally wear a size 6 and the size 6 Rykas WERE a bit small for me at the beginning, but now that they're "worn in a bit", they're the perfect size for my feet!

Just my .02....

Later than usual!!!

Hello everyone! Boy what a week. I have not slowed down and have found it difficult to fit everything in. On top of it all my DSL has been down for about a week and I am typing fast so I get this checkin in before it goes out again. They have been working on the phone lines and have had everything messed up. VERY FRUSTRATING...to say the least!!!

Bobbi, I will join you in only doing 2 cardio workouts this week. Very pathetic for me. I usually love cardio much more than weights but this week it was different. I just wanted to lift weights. Weird!!!

Debra, I hope those shingles heal fast. I have heard they are extremely painful. I know it's terrible to feel good otherwise but can't do normal workouts because of something like that. Hopefully that medicine will heal you extremely fast. :)

Here it is, such as it is:

MONDAY: S&H Legs and Shoulders. I did not do this tape last week so I wanted to get it in the first of this week.

TUESDAY: S&H Chest and back AND 30 minutes of CIA 9801 HI/LO First time to attempt it and I liked it. I really don't have enough room for it and had to modify quite a bit.

WEDNESDAY: I honestly cannot remember if I did anything this day. I am really not having a good memory lately. I am thinking that I did not do anything because I know I did only two cardios and I did all my weights that I intended to. So I guess I said all that to say that this was an unplanned rest day!

THURSDAY: S&H Tris/Bis

FRIDAY: Super Step. Fun!

SATURDAY: Shoulders--my own little workout. I just wasn't in the mood for a "regular workout". I lifted very heavy...or heavy for me. Shoulder are not my strongest muscle but they are coming along. It's nice to see improvements.

I am determinted come heck or high water that this week is going to be a better one. That is if I actually get to stay home this week. Go, Go, Go!!!!!! Have a great week everyone!!!!!!

Kelly

I also only got in two cardios this week Bobbi!

Debra-My friend's daughter just got the shingles also. She is 6 and he says it's because his wife is always buying junk, so that's all they eat. But, I am always amazed at your good eating habits. It will be interesting to know if you find out what weakened you immune system. Hope you get to feeling better!

CONGRATULATIONS GRETCHEN! :-jumpy

Mon. S&H chest and back
Tue. Intense Moves
Wed. S&H bis and tris
Thu. CTX Kickbox and 10-10-10 cardios (too much for the knees)
Fri. S&H legs and shoulders
Sat. Cemetery cleanup. Did a lot of sweating, but didn't get out of breath. Went to town (Vegas), saw a friend, stayed in a hotel and ended up sleeping on the HARD! floor with my baby. So the next day I felt like I had worked out!

Andrea

Debra - I had shingles, too, when I was 18. Because I was still on my parents insurance while in college and my parents never sent us to the doctor unless we were close to dying (okay I exaggerate a bit) or had broken bones, I never saw a doctor. After a few weeks they went away on their own but the itching drove me mad! I would definitely see a doctor now that I'm older and wiser ;-)

My week went like this:

Sunday - Walking on incline & jogging for 45 minutes on treadmill

Monday - PS-CST + PS-BBA

Tuesday - Step Works

Wednesday PS-SLA

Thursday - Cardio Kicks

Friday - Circuit Max

Saturday - Rest

Have a great week everyone!

Sue

LAST EDITED ON Oct-29-01 AT 02:57PM (Est)[p]Debra,

Did you cut or burn yourself or anything like that? Even when I burn my tongue on hot soup or a hot drink, I end up with something. I'm sure that's how the virus gets into my system because otherwise I never get sick.

Hope you are back up to par amazingly quickly.
Take care,
Jodi
