Cheaper for me to go to Hawaii

I live in the north and so winters are pretty harsh. I decided I really want to go somepace truly warm in the winter for about a week and was thinking Florida. When I looked up rates in florida for just the hotel alone it ranged from 250/night to nearly a 1000 bucks! Then for a laugh I looked up Hawaii and a r/t flight plus 6 nites hotel came to 1300 including tax! Thing is , I really don't want to travel that far but it is tempting.

Anyway I can only think of southern florida as a place whose temp. is still beach weather in the middle of January. Are there other places in the states where the temp is beach weather in mid Jan?

Hi Kazze,

San Diego is beautiful, warm and sunny at that time of year. Palm trees, and tropical all over the place. Florida and Hawaii are beautiful as well.

My choice is San Diego, the Zoo is remarkable, the animal park, and a theme park, and many other places to visit. Hawaii is unique surrounded by ocean activities, volcano history, just to name a few, you will love it also. There are many things to keep your interrest going in both places. I've been to Florida too, and if you go, make sure you go to the keys. The history in Florida is fantastic, and is rich in culture.

I agree with all that San Diego is gorgeous - it is one of the prettiest places I've ever visited. There are some places in Southern Texas (South Padre Island, for example) that stay mild throughout the winter, but maybe not "beach weather". I think South Padre is about 65-70 in December & January. Still not bad!

Hi kazze,

I know this isn't in the states, but have you considered Costa Rica? It's not as far as Hawaii, but a little farther than Florida. DH and I did a week there last year and hotels, airfare, and rental car was about $1400 per person, and we did stay at one rather expensive hotel for three nights ($299 per night). I suspect there are cheaper options out there as well.

It's a pretty popular destination for American travelers.

Mexico is not in the states either and my DH and I have found it not only cheap and warm but a whole lot of fun!

Good Luck!

We have gone several times...Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Ensenada, and Cabo.

Mazatlan was our fave!

1,078km (674 miles) NW of Mexico City; 502km (314 miles) NW of Guadalajara; 1,561km (976 miles) SE of Mexicali

Mazatlán is comfortable, casual, value-packed Mexico at its best. More than any other beach resort in the country, it probably best represents the golden beaches, fresh seafood, and inexpensive accommodations that typified Mexico's appeal to travelers in the first place. Although some developments are edging Mazatlán into the golf-playing, manicured resort that typifies most of Mexico today, it is going there grudgingly -- most of Mazatlán remains refreshingly simple.

Mazatlán's lures continue to be its expansive beaches and renowned sportfishing. The evolving golf scene, luxury yacht harbor, and growing selection of accommodations have yet to catch the attention of enough tourists to drive prices to the levels of other Mexican resorts, and that's good news for travelers looking for economy in a beach resort.

A city with a population of nearly 500,000, Mazatlán is the largest port between Los Angeles and the Panama Canal. Elegant reminders of its history, 27km (17 miles) of sandy beaches, and a geographically diverse environment are all added attractions in Mazatlán's efforts to become a premier beach resort.

Limited flight availability is the principal factor holding back Mazatlán's growth. Charter operators have picked up some of the slack and are the predominant means of arrival here.

Once known as a spring break haven and a place to party, Mazatlán is now attracting more families, mature travelers, and other tourists with an eye for value. It enjoys strong repeat business and positive word of mouth, as it continues to offer exceptional vacation values.

Have fun!

Have you considered Cancun or the Bahamas? Either place shouldn't be a long plane ride from the East Coast. I do know that Cancun is fairly cheap to fly and stay....

San Diego does not have beach weather in January (I live here). However, it will be in the mid 60s or so; however, winter is our rainy season....

Hope this helps.

Being someone who has lived in NW Florida for for past 7 years, it's not bad. It gets a little chilly in the winter (Dec/Jan) but the coldest it gets is around 38-45 degrees. I have lived in some pretty cold climates (Nebraska/Chicago) and have visited even colder (Niagra Falls in February, UP in February) and have found that the northern Florida climate is fun! In fact, the first winter DH and I lived here we were walking in shorts on the beach on December 25th!! Had to call family in Chicago/N. Indiana, of course!!!!

We maybe breakout heavy jackets a couple of times during the winter. My parents come to visit the end of Feb/early March and always bring shorts. That's the nicest weather, then, no humidity!!!

I do have to broaden my plans a bit. I wanted total beach weather but am unwilling to spend in the upwards of 300/n for a room in southern Florida. I was thinking San Diego even though it isn't beach weather and although I wasn't considering leaving the USA - I might think about that. Thing is, winter time is the slow season for me. It is the perfect time to take a vacation but because it is sooooo coooolllllddddd here in the northeast, I crave and need and want warmth...yet cannot justify the FLorida hotel rates at that time.
