Charter member?

I don't know if this is a dumb question, but what is a charter member that I see in the messages? I guess Im just curious. Thanks

When Cathe switched to the new format (software),recently, those of us who were registered before that time just got entered in as 'charter'. There's no favoritism or anything like that by being 'charter'. That is how it was explained on another thread someplace.
