Cervical epidural injection for pain relieve?

Has anyone had or known someone who had cervical epidural injections to relieve back/arm pain? If so what was the experience like and did it help? My DD(21) has had pain in her back/shoulder blade area for over a month now. She has tried physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications with no relieve. I don't know much about the procedure and am kind of leery about the whole injection part. Any advice would be helpful.

Well, I just had a baby and got an epidural and it was WONDERFUL for childbirth! :)

I've only heard of these for general pain releief (mostly with migraines), but it's a temporary treatment that requires a great deal of maintenance since a doctor has to administer the shot.

It's also painful, I can't lie. I wouldn't have traded it for the world over dealing with contractions, but the pain would have to be pretty severe for me to consider it as a regular treatment.

She's had X-rays, and all that, I'm sure to know what's causing the pain?

epidural

Hi,

I had 2 herniated discs and the suggested treatment was 3 steroid epidurals @10-14 day intervals. I looked on-line and this is pretty standard. I didn't have them because the thought of an epidural is just aweful to me. I had both my kids naturally. However, there is a co-worker who has recurrent back pain and she has them periodically. They seem to relieve the pain without any short term repercussions.

I am certainly no expert, but I'm pretty sure that the epidural that one gets for childbirth (which is left in place while it's needed) is different from the epidural injections that one gets for back pain. One is a small tube that administers the medicine over time, and the other involves injections. I think they are both called epidurals because they both involve the epidural space around the spinal cord.

My MIL got the epidural shots for back pain (not cervical, but lower down) and found them pretty painful when they were administered. She got some pain relief for a short time, but to be honest, she has so many health problems at her age causing her aches and pains that I'm not sure her situation would apply to your DD's. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I am at the moment getting these shots, I have 4 herniated discs in my neck which affects my entire right hand & arm. I don't know if it is the time since my last episode or if the injections are truly working. These NOT the epidurals of child birth. I am seeing a pain management doctor for them as not all orthepedists will inject the spine. Good luck to you

Thank you each for your responses. DD is scheduled for Friday for her first one. I just wish I had been with her at the Dr. appointments when they recommended this so I could have asked more questions. It's hard even when they are grown to not be a mother.

Thanks again,
Jean

My husband suffered from sciatica for well over a year and did the PT, went to a chiropractor, took prednisone (which made him feel crazy), did acupuncture, and nothing worked. I finally suggested he try an epidural (I saw it somewhere on the internet), and not only did it work almost immediately, but he hasn't had any pain like that since, and believe me, he is a perpetual motion machine--a farmer who does a tremendous amount of lifting. If the pain comes back, he would get another epidural in a NY minute.

Just wanted to be encouraging. This might really work for your daughter.
