CC or iTrain workouts

I'm not understanding why these workouts are big hits. I need some understanding on how they work. From what I understand you hear people in the background (along with music) telling you how to walk, jog, run or treadmill/yoga/sculpt... Wouldn't a nice DVD be better, something you can see? What is all the hype about? I don't get it. Please help me understand.

Janie,
These are excellent cardio workouts and breaks the bordom factor by about 100%!

Yes, you understand it correctly. You put these workouts on an mp3 player (or CD and you can use it on any cd player) and you follow what the coach says.

Cardio Coach workouts are a bit different then iTreads. I like the way CC's are set up better the iTreads, but I have to say, iTreads are harder for me.

Others will chime in, that's my 2 cents. They are worth every penny.

But how does it break the boredom factor? Just trying to justify it.

Janie,

I have both and really enjoy them. The benefit to having these as opposed to a DVD is that they are much more portable. Pop them in your ipod and hop on your favorite machine or go for a run. They push me harder than I would push myself. I use them for the same reason I use Cathe tapes for weight work. I know that if I just lifted on my own, I wouldn't lift near heavy enough, but having Cathe as a guideline (or, in many cases a goal!) I challenge myself more. Same deal with CC's and itreads. I, like Debbie, prefer the way Cardio Coaches are set up, but itreads are challenging, too.

If you use any kind of cardio equipment, I highly recommend them.

I think especially if you go to a gym it makes you work more intensely than just cruising along to music. It gives you challenges. Example it will say to increase your speed or resistance. It kind of helps to have it just tell you what to do just like if you were to watch a dvd. Prevents boredom with something different and challenging as any new workout. :) HTH

I agree with Becca on the intensity factor. I would NEVER push myself to run as fast or on as high of an incline if Grace (from the iTreads) wasn't pushing me to do it. I don't just love them for the music--I mostly love them for the coaching. The voice you hear in your ears is so motivating. Plus, I don't have to do any "work" deciding what to do. If I want to do hills or intervals, or sprints, I just choose the right iTread and Grace tells me what to do. They're also incredibly convenient because they're so portable. Just download them on your ipod and you can use the machines at a gym, at your house, at a hotel fitness center, etc. You don't need a dvd player.

I prefer iTreads over CC because Grace tells you exactly what speeds and inclines to be at (which are, of course, guidlines--you can go faster or slower) vs. CC goes by "zones" and percieved exertion. I am not very good at gauging my PE. I always think I'm slacking. Even using a HRM didn't help. I would push too hard.

I also love, love, love Grace. I feel the same way with her that I do with Cathe. I feel connected to her for some reason. She's incredibly motivating and I feel like I "know her" the same way I do with Cathe.

Like Cathe is not for everyone, CC and iTreads may not be for you. That's ok!!

Hope this clarifies them for you a little bit!

Janie - iTrain and CC workouts are designed to be used on cardio machines, for the most part. There aren't too many DVDs out there that guide you through a running workout on a treadmill. In fact, I'm not sure there are any. So what these do is give you some kind of plan to follow, with music, so you can push yourself a bit harder, or train better, than you would just sitting on an exercise bike and pedalling for 45 minutes (which is also the most deadly boring thing on earth).

Exercise machines are pretty tedious to use. These make the workouts fun.

Does that help? They're not intended to take the place of, say, a Cathe workout.

What if you didn't understand a particular move. Is there someone you can contact to find what it is?

I hope I'm not wasting anyones time here. I just really don't know these things. My husband just bought me an MP3 player and I'm considering purchasing some of these workouts.

I do not have a TM in my home. I have to go to the gym in order to use one. For this reason a DVD is useless to me. The BBC series has 4 TM work outs included but I've never done a single one of them because I can not bring the dvd to the gym with me. The portability is great and TBH, ya really don't need to be watching other people run/walk/jog. The audio is plenty and then you can watch tv or people watch or whatever you like. :) They are great work outs to take outside too and ya can't do that with a dvd!HTH!

Janie - with the Cardio Coach workouts, there aren't any moves. It's simply used on either a bike, an elliptical or a treadmill. There are some iTrain workouts (like iSculpt, iBallet) that use moves, but they're explained clearly and often there are instructions on the computer that you can look up. The iTreads that everyone uses are only used on a treadmill. I'll say again that they're not like Cathe workouts. It's not like doing an Imax on an MP3 player. They are almost exclusively used on cardio exercise equipment.

I can now see the benefits of the workouts. But, (and I don't know if this is legal or not) couldn't you just use a soundtrack from your favorite DVD's and put them on the MP3 player? If you remember the workouts you could do them outside, in the gym...wherever. This is for personal use only, so I think (but not sure) it's OK to do this. I don't even know if that is possible, but if it were, could do this to your favorite workouts? I'm assuming it is possible with our new technology we have today. But then again, maybe that's why CC and iTrain is out there, because it is illegal to to use workout soundtracks. Ummmmmm.

Would love your opinions, please keep them coming.

OK you Enablers,

I'm going to bite the bullet here(as Allison says) and see what this hype is all about. I'll buy one and hear from there.

Thanks for all the inputs and answers, you all are great! I new I could count on you.

Shelly I agree, but you could do the Imax 3 if you were, lets say on vacation, in a hotel at a park for a picnic, beside a pool, in a gym... That's if you remember what to do as Cathe says it.

Another example; I would love to do Rhythmic Step, or any of her step workouts, cause I remember them well. I guess it would be possible if you did weighted workouts too. There are particular ones I remember well, and would sometime love to bring them around with me. Would also have to bring the equipment along, but would only do that if I were to stay at a place more than a week at a time (which I do, we spend the Fall and part of Winter in Utah). I would do that, especialy if I didn't have a DVD player and wanted to do it outside.

If you wanted to do a treadmill workout, biking, walking, running... then I can see using CC's and iTrain's workouts. This I'm going to try for sure.

As you can see I'm using my imagination if you were able to use your MP3 player for other things. And if it were possible to use the sound tracks from your DVD workouts. I love this concept. I'm going to look into it further. Oh, the possibilities! I'm sure this is not new stuff, is it?

I don't get the hype either and am debating with myself about buying them with this great deal. The thing is, for my cardio I MUCHO prefer either step or kickboxing. I hate the treadmill (although I have one) and avoid it at all costs. Also, I don't run too much for various reasons and instead my sheltie loves taking me on a speed walk every morning. So with that information, would this be beneficial for me? Thanks for any help you can give me in making this decision especially because right now I don't have many $$$ to waste since I just plunked down a lot of dough on buying almost all of Cathe's dvd's (not the really old ones) plus STS. :7

One thing that helps me when doing these workouts, especially CC is the use of visual imagery. Hearing him tell me that the wind doubts its ability to hold me back makes me push even harder (LOL!) and I am always happy to get to that oasis he talks about in one of his workouts. These workouts help me not only work harder but FOCUS. IMHO people who read while on machines aren't working hard enough.

I think they're worth a shot. I hated running too and then I found these and they really make running (and walking) a whole different workout. Just try a twenty minute one. Just think of it this way--even the 60 minute ones are only $12.99. That's still WAY cheaper than any Cathe workout out there. :)

ETA: Cardio Coaches can easily be taken outside for your walks with your dog. They add a little more "pep" to my outdoor walks. And there are specific iTreads that are for outdoors. I now MUCH prefer to run/walk on my treadmill than outside because of these workouts. God, I sound like a commercial for them. ;)

Allison (or anyone),
I'm joining this late, but I've been reading it all day wondering about their usefulness outdoors. I have an elliptical but not a treadmill, so I do all my running outside. Can you tell me which ones are for outdoors or work well outdoors? I've been to the website, but it's hard to tell much since I'm totally unfamiliar with it.
Thanks a million!
