Cathe - warming up & stretching question?

midnight

Cathlete
Hi Cathe,

I answered an earlier post about Stretch Max saying that I had been taught never to stretch a cold muscle. I did Stretch Max today and noticed there is nothing mentioned in the intro about warming up prior to doing one of the programs. If you're coming off another workout and you're already warmed up, no problem, but shouldn't you do some sort of a warm up before doing these otherwise?

I did like your comment that flexibility training is the most neglected area of fitness training. It definitely helps with your range of motion in other types of training that you do.

Thanks,
Lois

Definitely you should be warmed up before beginning a stretching program of any kind. Not only will it prevent injury, it will feel more comfortable and you will be able to go deeper into the stretches, thus making them more productive for you.

The way Cathe designed this workout suggests that she knows her clients very well. She knows that we are an "educated crowd" who understand that warming up is essential. She does not necessarily need to take us through it to know that we will do it for ourselves. She expects that many of us will not be doing stretching only on a particular day, not to say that we might not, but most of us will tag a segment of stretch on to the end of our cardio or lifting for the day.

It's quite possible that she did say to warm up and I missed it. And, you're right, everyone using this series has to be an advanced exerciser so will know to do this already.

Thanks!!
Lois
