Cathe replacement for squats w/ barbell?

Cathe, since hurting my back (compression of vertebre) I still can't put weight on my shoulders. When doing squats, I usually do pulses or sit-n-stands or just hold weight at my sides. The most weight I use is 20 lbs when holding the weight at my sides, and 25 lbs. for pulses, ?-is this as effective as using a barbell w/ 50 lbs. plus the 10 lb. weighted vest (this was what I could do before the accident).
