Cathe or anyone- kids' workout video?

Hi Cathe and all,

My 8 year old son is a bit on the heavy side - about 10-15 pounds overweight and he's very self-conscious about it. Unfortunately, his 10 year old brother is slim and wiry and very athletic, so this doesn't help his ego much that he is heavier than him.

As a family we are really focusing on diet changes - the boys are constantly reading labels for trans fats/saturated fats, etc. So, I think our diet is really getting on track (other than that evening snacking which I could stop as well :))

My question is -- are there age-appropriate workout videos/dvd's for kids? Something with easy moves - calisthenics, stretching, etc. He sees me doing Cathe several times a week, and he said he'd be interested in doing some on his own.

I appreciate any and all help I can get for my little guy - he's such a super-sensitive kid and I want to help build his self-esteem.

Thanks,
Heidi

Go onto the Collage Video (www.collagevideo.com) website and use "kids" as a keyword in its search feature (there are three: Instructor; Title; and another one; use "kids" in the another one); several options will pop up.

Oh, A-Jock beat me to it. I was going to recommend Collage Video also. Good luck in finding a video and that's great that your family is getting fit together!

For Christmas I gave DD "Kick to get fit for kids" from Amazon. She's 5, but the kids in the video are probably 5-12 yrs old. It's no Cathe workout, but DD seems to like it!

Beachbody also has a video for kids 5 to 11 called Tony and the Kids that I just read about yesterday on another forum. I really don't know anything about it, but it may be worth checking out. It's only $9.95, which is quite a bit less than most of the options on Collage, and it sounds like it might be interesting. Here's a link:

Good luck with finding something for your son.

I got my 7 year old son the Billy Blanks Tae Bo kicks for Christmas as he was always wanting to do my Cathe dvds. He seems to enjoy it and it doesn't seem too hard.

Hi Heidi,
I was reading your post and it could have been mine. Our situations are identical. My son has asked for workout videos but I didn't know if I should get them. Your post is making me think twice. He is only 6 but since he is interested I should probably go for it. I did look at Collage and they do have some interesting choices. Keep us posted on what you choose and how it works out for you.

My boys won't do videos, but we have Eye Toy for Playstation 2 and they will do that. There are all kinds of games on it - boxing, soccer, etc. that keeps them jumping around. I'm not certain if you can get it without the game system. They also have a Star Wars lightsaber game that is hooked up to the tv and they have to swing their swords around for that and actually get quite winded and sore from that. Some kids like Dance Dance Revolution also. I'm always looking for ideas for indoor activities in the winter.

Thanks Cathe and everyone who responded with links and ideas. I may give the Tae-Bo for kids a try. A friend of my older son has DDR - so that is a playstation 2 game? My boys just got a PS2 (bought it with accumulated money between the two of them) I'd spring for a DDR for them - so don't you pay for the game and then the mat? Is it pricey? I could just go look it up, I guess...

Thanks for the ideas - it is truly appreciated.

My oldest boy is nine now and we bought the Billy Blansk Kicks for Kids about a year and half ago to use when the weather outside is bad. He liked it and we did it together, so it was fun for me too! Now, believe it or not, he and my second son (who turns eight today!) do the Cardio from Drill Max on rainy days! They don't have perfect form, but they really sweat and try their best! Something to work up to for all of us!

All the best to you and your son!
