Cathe or Any of you that Run

I just began running - oh my, I want to know if it is unusual for your quads to swell, why they do it,if it is normal, and how to make it go down!

I've run since I was a teen. I never had this problem. Try icing it. Maybe you did too much. Was this your first time? Are you pushing yourself too hard? If it continues, you might want to talk to a doctor.

Yadira - thank you for responding, I ran a little around Christmas while we were on vacation and did really well, we were in Florida and it was very flat. I just started again to add it to my routine in an effort to lean out my lower body a little more. Our turrain is hilly and rocky here at home, dirt road (boonies). I may have done too much for the first time, I am a bit sore today - my shins, ankles, knees, quads and midsection are all pretty sore. But I only ran for 45 minutes at a comfortable pace. I did not feel this way last time and like I said my quads are swollen, or they were yesterday - I figured I would start at twice a week running for 4 miles but I may have to rethink that - how did any of you start?

I only run sprints so I only sprint/jog/walk(recovery) for 20 min.I have never had this problem and I run on dirt.Make sure you have good running shoes that support your ankles well and even if your shoes look good they still wear pretty fast that may be your ankle problem.I really like new balance shoes.make sure you stretch really well after words.and I always do a little walk first as a warm up.I was going to run today but the weather isn't coporating.Good luck I hope someone else can give you some advice Like I said I have never had anything get sore but my calves and butt and thighs when I run and it does lean out my body.

I, like you, am just starting to add running to my program. I've been using he "Couch to 5k" program on coolrunning.com under the newbie section. I still get aches and pains following this program and I'm very fit right now (have been cross country skiing all winter, am fit enough to do 15k and 25k races). Running puts a lot of different stresses on muscles and joints and you'll probably do better if you try to work up to 4 miles slowly. The C25k program works up to 3 miles over the course of two months. If you already do a lot of impact aerobics you may not have to work up to longer distances that slowly.:)

Hi, Kathy! I chuckled at "only 45 minutes". That's a lot! LOL! You might try using a walk/run intervals program or just cutting back to 2-3 miles twice a week. The rule of thumb is to add 10% to your mileage each week. And since you run on rough ground you might invest in trail runners. They have a lugged sole that gives you more stability. Icing is probably a good idea and ibuprofen helps too when you are very sore. I went out last Saturday for the first time in over a year and a half and I got it in the hamstrings big time. After a second run, my legs didn't get sore. You will adapt quickly, I'm sure! Running is the bomb! LOL!

And, Kathy, 82 pounds since '02! Wow! You look amazing! I love your avatar! :)

Muscles can retain water when they are challenged/growing and it is a temporary condition most all of the time. Are you just noticing your jeans are tighter around the quads or something? It should get better on its own after about 3 weeks or so. Congrats on the running. Its a discipline, huh? :)

Hey! I wanted to say thank you for your replies - I have been out of town all week and I am so happy so see your answers!

Bobbi - thank you so much for your encouragement - I think I might try the intervals - I just thought some sustained cardio would be excellent for my program but I may have to work up to it.

Amy, thank you for that information - yes my jeans are very tight on my quads - they went down a bit and then I ran again this week and back up they were - I am going to keep at it though -- we will see what happens in another week!

Thanks again for replying! ( Oh, yes, it does take discipline!)
