Hi Cathe,

I came home from running errands this morning to discover my 2 daughters half way through a Meso 3 STS disc! My 9 year old has been doing my Sunday STS discs with me for the past month, and my 4 year old occasionally joins in, but this is the first time they've pulled it out on their own. They've got the equipment all set up, are going at it, and the 9 year old is recording her weights. You've been a good influence on these kids! Thanks for all you do!!

Sandra

How many pounds does she use?

I love it when kids get into exercise.

Very light ones: 3's, 5's or 8's, with maybe a 10lb barbell. I haven't attempted to introduce her to the concept of going to failure or using a % of her 1RM. I'm letting her keep it fun, and letting her figure out how to do the exercises correctly. I also ask her to identify which muscle group she's targeting, so that she learns as she goes along. But I have to emphasize that she's chosen to do this all on her own. I've always let the kids know that they're welcome to use any of my equipment and videos, and join me at any time, but I've never pressured them to do it. They just see me and my husband exercising daily (and I am a personal trainer and a group fitness instructor), and want to play along. Role modeling works! It helps that Cathe's workouts are always very engaging :)

Cheers!

Hey Sandra
Not to rain on your parade in any way shape or form, because I am a firm believer in exercise for kids....but....weights really should be discouraged at this point in time in their lives. I stand on my information as a pediatric/pediatric ICU nurse who has three kids who were really into exercise when they were younger. I was concerned about weight lifting, especially for my son, who wanted to do heavy weights at the age of twelve. One of our pediatric intensivists (an MD who specializes in Pediatric ICU)recommended waiting on any kind of weight training until children are in their mid teens. Primarily because tendons, ligaments and bone growth is at an accelerated point, growth plates have not closed and tendon/ligament attachments can be easily injured. Running, jumping, using their own bodies as resistance is not a problem, but weight training is not recommended. Injuries at this age can do permanent damage. Not to give you a hard time or to discourage your daughters, but please, for their own safety, ask your pediatrician and read up a bit on what the experts think about this topic.
Thanks for listening to my blather!

How adorable Sandra. I bet that sight just warmed your heart when you walked in. Your exercise habits have set a wonderful example for your kids which they will most likely carry with them through their adult years. Active children not only lead healthier lives but they usually function better all around from thinking, to sleeping, to digesting, etc. At their young ages the best exercises for them are endurance based challenges using their own body weight. When they finish growing, weight training (of course in a more serious manner than just playfully imitating mommy and daddy) can be taken more seriously. If your not sure, just run their activities past their doctors to make sure it is ok. Hugs to those adorable kids of yours....:D
