Pictured here are Cathe, Kristin, and Jenn D doing Mermaids with the Foam Roller in the Functional Pilates Fusion workout. The mermaid exercise works the core, most especially the oblique region.

Adding the foam roller to this exercise involves even more core stabilization because so much balance and control is required as the body freely and effortlessly rolls out along the roller.

The core is important in Pilates as it is the center of the body from which all movement stems. It is made up of the muscles of the abdomen, low back, and hips, and is often called the "powerhouse".
