? Cathe - is walking/jogging really a good way to drop weight?

I've been told by one expert that walking/jogging is one of the best ways to drop weight, but then the other day I read the opposite. What do you think?

Not Cathe, but I'll throw in my 2 cents. Walk/runs are a great calorie burner & a great intro to running. You can use either a watch for set intervals or a heart rate monitor (HRM). The advantage of a HRM is that you can stay in your aerobic training zone (65%-80%); after a walking warm-up, jog/slog/trot/run until you hit 80% then briskly until your HR drops to 65%. It's easy to go for 30-40 minutes using this method. It would be tough to just run out the door & continue for 40 minutes as a beginner. It also allows your joints to get used to running.

As far as weight loss, that's merely addressing calorie intake vs calories burned.

There are negatives to running (primarily the impact) but it's a great fuel burner.

Running is an excellent way to burn fat and helping you to control your weight. I also find that it is good for getting some fresh air into my system (I work in an office all day long and going from one confined space (office ) to another (gym) makes me tired). It's a great way to enjoy the long summer days.

I started running over a month ago and in that time I have used the run/walk method to get my body used to the impact and build speed.

If you are beginner, it might be better to start off in the gym, where the impact is less stressful on the treadmill and where you can start a regular programme without fighting against weather conditions. However, I find it quite difficult to maintain long distance running in the gym (30 mins maximum) and prefer to run outside where I can go the distance.

A good way to keep up the training is to train for a race 6-8 weeks.

Go to www.runnersworld.com for advice and race events in your area.

Good luck and one last piece of advice. Once you get over the initial hurdle in the first 2 months, running is one of the easiest exercise programmes to maintain over the long run.

Run!

I love my weekly jogs! Yes, they're a great way to burn calories and tone your legs. I wear a HR monitor (great investment, especially for running) and although I'm fit, my HR gets really high, so I add little walks to lower my HR. So it's definately an intense workout- I don't know how it can't be.

Just go slow in the beginning- you WILL most likely be sore (I still get sore even if I miss just 2 runs). And don't do too much too soon since it is high impact. And stretch!

Good luck, and enjoy the nice fall weather- perfect for runs (depending where you live)!

RE: Run!

Another one who's not Cathe... but just want to add my .02 cents worth of experience:

Running and run/walks are among the core components of my workout regimen. I don't do as many step routines anymore, but have incorporated more running and find that it does wonders for slimming down my thighs--more so than any other workout I do--and also helps with decreasing my overall body weight and fat-- particularly on my upper body. It's a great way to burn fuel and decrease all-over body fat. I highly recommend it. My only caveat is to ease into it, go slow, and be mindful of your knees and your overall body, and what your JOINTS may be telling you about how hard or how easy you may need to go. Hope that makes sense! Good luck.:)

RE: Run!

I can't agree more. I started doing stepping with Cathe, but now that has eased off a little and I find myself prefering to run:

1. Because it's still summer and the day is longer.
2. Because I prefer to exercise outdoors where possible to get away from the air conditioning.
3. Because the gym is always so full of people that sometimes you have to wait your turn (unless it's a big gym and there's lots of equipment).
4. Because it burns loads more calories than stepping and I can eat more (hehehehehe).
5. Because I am running races with other people so it's not so lonely.

I do hope you take up running and can find a few more reasons to add to the list.

Another good running site

Lost of good answers. I just found www.jeffgalloway.com and love the site. It focuses on running injury free and has lots of info on run/walks.
