Cathe, I'm totally confused now....

Hi Cathe,

I just read a recent post about how you got so lean for the hardcore series. You mentioned that is was a combo of hight protein diet. What does this mean for carbs? Can you be more specific on the # of svgs. of starches YOU had? (I know everyone has different intakes). And this is what's also confusing me is the cardio thing. Other recent posts suggest that cutting back on cardio actually helped people see results, so how do you know how many times per week or the intensity of cardio one should do per week? I want my veins to "pop" a little more, so should I be doing more than 5 days week of intense cardio? Just more specifics on this subject would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Amanda

Just to give my two cents:)

You are right in the fact that everyone's nutritional needs are going to be different. If you are training hard and heavy you will no doubt need carbohydrates, especially around the times you train for recovery. Protein is going to be based on your body size and caloric requirements. It's not a one size fits all deal. Again, this is just general advice here.

Also...

Lots of things to be considered here. Do you want to add mass? If so, heavy lifting and adequate protein is a must. Too much cardio may defeat the purpose if you are trying to gain mass.

Or, have you already gained the mass and know you want to 'lean out'? I am confused at what your goals are. If this is the case, you would want to definitely clean up the diet, maintain lifting to make sure you do not lose that hard earned muscle and do cardio. In my opinion, a very clean diet is a MAJOR factor in getting lean and is going to give you a lot of the results you want.

Hope this helps and I hope Cathe can give you further advice :D

Thanks for your input. For the most part, I do have the mass I want. I naturally have a muscular build, I just would like to lean out more so I can REALLY see my muscles. I can definitely see my abs, and I have my favorite little vein that's visible in my bicep...I'm so proud of it, Ha! Anyway, I just want to see it more. I just feel like I'm eating clean & training hard but not getting more ripped.

Amanda:)

Hi Amanda! I see you have already gotten some advice so I will just add a little more. As far as my diet, I actually don't post any specific diet plans/programs. It's too individual per person plus it is actually something that I feel a registered dietician should do since this is their level of expertise. In order for me to get my veins to pop, I need to lift heavy and get a lot of blood pumped into the muscle, do three 30 minute cardio's per week, eat SUPER clean, and have extra protein in my diet. I know the bicep vein that you speak of (I like that vein too, wink), and like any vein, muscle belly, etc, it is all up to your genetics (how vascular, how big, how defined, etc.) after you have done all that you can physically.

Keep training hard, stay consistent, and with how cut you sound to be I would say in about 6 more weeks (hitting each muscle group one to two times every 10 days)you'll be popping big time. Just don't pop any holiday treats in your mouth if you really want to do this right. I personally say wait until after the holidays unless you have something specific you are training for :)

Good Luck!

Cathe,
I was hoping to expand on this topic. I was wondering what your goals are when you are not training for a new dvd series. For instance, once you've reached your strength goals where do you go from there? Are there times when you are not concerned with being a lean as possible? I am by no means anywhere near your level of fitness but would like to one day be and was wondering what you do. Hope this makes sense.
Trina

Hi Trina! Well, because we film two times, sometimes three a year, I'm pretty much in some form of training year round. But not until a month before we film do I get very clean with my diet and weight training specific.

The rest of the time I usually have an extra three to five pounds on me and my training program varies also. I mix in circuits or total body training workouts for a couple of weeks to change things up.

Hoope this helps.

Cathe, Hi! I am reading all the blogs right now and I just want to again thank you for all that you do. I "discovered" you last November with K,P,C and ever since then I have been hooked. I love all your workouts and love to make different mish-moshes out of both the cardio and weights. You always give me such a great workout and I always feel so refreshed after I am done. You are so much more fun than boring cardio machines. }( I would have to say that my favorites will forever be K,P,C Drill Max and Imax3. Because I own so many of your workouts, the possibilities are endless. I won't ever need a gym!! Just wanted to let you know, and hope you have a wonderful holiday. I know I'll be working out hard to keep the holiday pounds away. Anyways, take care and keep the workouts coming. :)
