Cathe, HIIT workouts?

Cathlete
Hi Cathe,

I've seen this alot lately and was wondering what you could tell me about it. Also, how can I use YOUR workouts with this method. I tried the Imax 2 Blastmania yesterday and was wondering if this is a good example of High Intensity Interval Training? If so, what other workouts do you feel would accomplish this. I'm wondering if some form of Circuit Max, (Imax 1 obviously), maybe KPC cardio only? I really like the idea of quick, intense cardio workouts. One of my favorite quotes is when you tell us, "Hey, you can do anything for a minute, right?"!! If I know my cardio is only 20-30 minutes, I can talk myself into going on!!

Thanks,
Tricia

P.S.

Anyone else please feel free to pipe in here as well! I know I'm dealing with the educated crowd!

Tricia, ya took the words right out of my mouth!

I did Blastmania yesterday, too, and was going to ask if someone would list some ideas for this type of training using Cathe videos. It seems to me that Blastmania fits the bill nicely but I'd love to hear more suggestions.

It was a great workout, wasn't it?

Tricia & Soosan--I was just looking through all my Cathe cardio dvd chapters and premixes yesterday (after I did Blastmania) to see how--or if--I could use them for HIIT. I'd love to hear Cathe's or educated crowd's ideas or opinions. I so appreciate you posting this!:)

Hi Ladies! Well you all have it down pat as far as cardio is concerned. Any type of intense drills is considered interval training so keep mixing & matching it up. I usually do 30 min. of cardio 3x a week. I've managed to work out a very nice rotation each week. So far this is my 5th week. It also applies to weight training. You'll take one body part (i.e., biceps) & superset 2 different exercises: preacher curls do 30 reps + go immediately into concentration curls for 30 reps. Don't however do the other body parts in a superset fashion. I don't work my upper body entirely in a superset fashion. I work 2x a week chest/shoulders/tris/abs & 1x a week legs/back/biceps/forearms/abs & the next week I change it up: legs/back/biceps/forearms/abs 2x a week & then chest/shoulders/tris/abs 1x a week. Its been more intense & I've been having great results. I'm more cut than I was before as well as being leaner. Have fun w/it! Kathy:D

Kathy, if you've been using Cathe videos for your cardio, which workouts/premixes have you been using and which sections of which videos have you mixed and matched?

I did KPC this morning. Those high intensity drills really get your heartrate up there! Do you think the Cardio Conditioning premix (warmup to first cooldown plus stretch - 37 min) would fit the bill?

Hi Susan! I only have my cardio on VHS:( so I usually mix & match the IMAXES like taking 1-5 Intervals from IMAX1 & tacking on CTX's Step N Intervals. I'll do the same w/IMAX2 intervals 6-10 & tack on hi-lo from SJP. You just have to remember to jump really high using the most intensity that you can for all of the drills. Now my kickboxing (I REALLY LOVE THIS) so I always do 60 min. of it using different tapes & instructors. My rotation consists of doing my weight training first (which works well for me) & then tacking on 30 min. of interval training. So I have to keep that in mind b/c my weight training on certain days is longer. If my weight training day is shorter then I'll do IMAX2 in its entirety. I just love this one so much. I can't tell you what to do b/c I don't have any of the cardios on DVD. Cathe has some great mix & matches recently that appeared in her most recent rotations; you should check them out. HTH, Kathy:D

If the Cardio Conditioning Premix has drills in it then just remember to put as much intensity into it as you can & go for it. You'll see after a while of doing all this interval work all of Cathe's cardio becomes easier.:7

I don't know what HIIT is, but here are a few suggestions for sharp, 30-minute (or thereabouts) cardio using Cathe DVD's (optimal to have a multi-disc player):

Circuit Max warm-up and hi/lo segments, fast-forwarding through first resistance cycle; then EITHER:
10-10-10 hi/lo segment OR
Boot Camp cardio only premix (omit warm-up) OR
Step Intervals interval segment

I-Max 1, omitting recovery segments by hitting the "next" button at the end of each interval blast

I-Max 2 Blast Mania, omitting recovery segments by hitting the "next" button at the end of each interval blast; then EITHER
Step Intervals interval segment; OR
I-Max 1 segments 8-10 in their entirety; OR
Boot Camp cardio only premix (omit warm-up)

CTX Power Circuit warm-up and hi/lo segment; then
Step Pump Jump hi/lo add-on premix (which omits resistance cycles)

Boot Camp cardio only premix (include warm-up); then
Boot Camp kickbox only premix (omit warm-up); then
Cardio Kicks power drills (upper body punching drills optional)

Thanks, Kathy! I do try to give it my all in all of my workouts. How high I can jump can vary greatly depending on the day!

A-Jock, ain't no way, no how, that I'm a-gonna omit any recovery segments. I can do without the preceding step segments, but I NEED those recoveries! I could, however, hit "next" after the recovery segments to get right to the blasts. I think I'll try that next time. I'm not sure I can handle your hi/lo suggestions, but I could probably work up to them if I don't kill myself first. Thanks for the suggestions!

Oh, and HIIT stands for "High Intensity Interval Training." It's supposed to be a very efficient way to improve cardio capacity and burn fat. Trevor posted that solely doing this type of cardio has done wonders for him, and others on the forum are finding similar results. I don't plan to train this way more than once or, at most, twice a week. Never say never, though.:)

Rocky's doing your mish-moshes constantly these days. He's insisting that we do them together the exact same way at the exact same time, like synchronized swimmers. I'm not biting.

Sooooooooooooosan - Rocky's not being fair. You're only a biped. And there's the longer leverage issue. Not to mention the tail-free aspect. Tell him to give you a break.

Fiona sends her regards. I think she's got her sights set on Sid The Sloth from "Ice Age" now.

I am all for HIIT workouts myself! I've just used the Imaxes, plus my Nordic and running. Aren't there some intervals at the end of MIC? And as A-Jock mentioned there are some in CTX. I hope Cathe answers....:)...Carole

Hi Carole! Yes you can definitely use MIC & CTX Step N Intervals. I think we could also use Cardio Kicks (the drills part); this would be considered HIIT. Are there any in the Timesaver DVDs? I don't have these but was very interested in purchasing this. Thanks, Kathy:D
