Cat Concern

Hi All,
Hoping someone has some advice. Yesterday my cat seemed to have an irritated eye - she rub it and wouldn't open it all the way, it had tears. Then she was fine. Just now, I went by her and the one eye had all teared up again and she basically looked like she was crying out of one eye. She's opening it all the way and was just playing...any ideas? Do I watch it or run her to the vet? The eye is normal color, no reddness.

Help! She's my little baby! TIA

Tygra,

Hey just my opinion here but when it comes to eyes I dont mess around. I get my cats to the vet pronto because about 10 years ago I had a cat who started this same way and I watited and I ended up having to go to the eye clinic for amimals and he underwent 5 surgeries on one eye and 3 on the other-he had a corneal sequestrum-so about 10,0000 dollars later he was fine-I still have him and he is my baby. This is a worst case but like I said I would go to the vet. Hope that helps good luck
Sincerely,
Lisa

Tygra,

I agree with Lisa. Eye problems can get bad very quickly, so I would take her in and get it checked out. Probably nothing too serious, maybe a scratch on her cornea, but she should get attention sooner rather than later.

It could be a corneal scratch or an irritant (probably is). If you have some eye rinse, you can try washing the eye out (do NOT do any rubbing, but flood the eye with the rinse: don't use just water, you can buy eye rinse either for humans or animals, since our eyes are the same!). If this doesn't seem to help, then get to the vet ASAP.

My cat Bobsie had a 'winky' slightly teary eye last week, so I did the rinsing, and she was fine by the next day (wasn't fond of the rinsing, though!). Though your cat seems like s/he has more irritation than Bobsie did.

Take her to the vet right away. Even if it is minor now, it could develop into a worsening condition or infection if left untreated. We had a cat that scratched his eye and ultimately had to have the eye removed!! Better to be safe than sorry - particularly when your baby is the one doing the suffering.

My cats have had the same thing happen over the years- turns out it was allergies!! From the way you are describing it, I'm guessing that is what it is. But I agree with the others - we can't be too careful with our beloved kitties! Let the vet check him out just in case - and also for your peace of mind.

Hi all,

Thanks for responding. I have an appointment at her vet (which makes my kitty cry just by that alone :) ) this evening - but it's in 5 more hours. I'm at work and she's at home, it was watering this morning again. I feel bad being here and waiting. Hope the waiting will be okay.

Appreciate everyone! Thanks! I'll let you know what they say.

Does your cat play with catnip?
I cant tell ya the endless times my cat had eye infections from that stuff...always had to go and get some drops for it.
Good luck!

Really, cat nip? I've never heard of that, then again, I'm fairly new to cat ownership. That's something that I will be sure to look out for. Did your vet ever explain why it might cause eye infections? I'm curious now. Sorry, I guess I'm that kind of person that needs to know why. I probably drove the folks crazy when I was 2. LOL!

Kathy

Edited to add, let us know what the vet said! You did the right thing, but I'm sure you know that already.

Hi All, thanks again for everyone's help. We have just came back from the vet. He examined her eye and said there may be a little infection, there was nothing major he could see in her eye and by the way she was acting. He gave us a prescription eye drop for her that we have to put in 2 x per day for 14 days (neopolydex?). So that will be sad doing that to her (it seemed to burn a little for her there as he said it would when the meds seep in, but it goes away) as her eye then really tears and she doesn't open it. She's now finishing dinner.

I hope this cures it!

Thanks again!

So glad to hear it's nothing serious and easily treatable!!!
Giving a cat any kind of medicine is no fun though - I know you will be glad when that is done!

It's tough because you can't explain to it that it's for their own good, but as someone who gives my cat medicine twice a day (a cream that I smear inside her ear), I always remind myself that I'm doing it because I love her and she knows I love her and that her trust in me is complete - even when she's mad at me for messing with her ear!

Thanks, that's great! They get over the madness quickly. They are just full of unconditional love.

Have a great night!

I am so glad to hear your baby is doing well!! I agree they are full of unconditional love arent they!!! I am hugging all of mine right now-I hope you have a great night as well!!

Sincerely,
Lisa
