Cardio Question

Hi Cathe:I weigh 135pds and am 5ft4in.I would like to get down to 120.My problem is I hear so much about weight lifting and I do believe the more muscle you have the more calories you burn at rest. But I feel if I don't do cardio everyday I'm not burning off those extra calories.I usually don't have the time for a step tape and then a full body weightlifing. What would my best way to go?Thank You~Linda~P.S.Can't wait for the Intesity Series.

I have that same problem. I am 5'4" also, but I weigh a little more than you. I feel I just am not doing enough if i don't do cardio too. I do a CTX cardio. Sometimes I burn myself out from doing too much.

I am not Cathe, but I think Cathe addressed this very problem in a handy way- called Cross Train Express! I am using it now, doing one full tape every day, and loving it! The cardios sure are intense, but I have done IMax once or twice a week for 3 weeks and it's easier to get into these tapes now than the last time I tried it.

One good thing about the strength work is that you work each part when you're fresh (thoroughly warmed up but not lifting other parts) so you can give each part peak attention.

Connie:I noticed that the CTExpress has short periods of cardio.Did you feel that you are burning enough calories in that short of a time?I don't have the CTE but I think I have every video Cathe makes(Shes my hero)Thanks,Linda

Linda:
I was doing cardio (IMax, Power Max, Rhythmic Step, Step Works, etc.) 2 to 3 times a week. I think doing it 4-5 times a week in the shorter format of CTX is better, now. in 2-3 weeks the longer cardio fewer times will be better again. Variety is what keeps it getting better.

This enables me to strength train with variety too. All in just one hour a day, five days a week. My job is slightly to moderately active, so it works for me. I am in a maintenance phase for weight/ bodyfat so that should figure in also.

What is bumping?

Just noticed that everyone keeps using that term. Curious what it means. Also- some people say that doing cardio one day is good, and then doing strength training another day is good, but that doing both of them on the same day is not so good for you. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?? It might just be a myth, and I don't really follow it. I usually do MIC two days a week, MIS one day a week, CardioMax another day, and I usually mix two CTX tapes for a fifth day, but I just do the cardio of two and I skip the strength. So, this gives me two strength days, and three cardios (plus a little extra strength on my CardioMax day). I guess if it was bad for you to do both strength and cardio on the same day, Cathe wouldn't be making videos that consists of both. I've just heard that it's not AS GOOD. But...I do find it much harder to do both Cardio and Strength in one round. Like CardioMax....kicks my butt. Also Step Intervals (one of the videos in the CTX series) is another one that I have to take quite a few breaks while doing.

Thoughts anyone??

Marisa :)

RE: What is bumping?

Hi Marisa:Bumping is the term they use to get the question put back up at the top of the page.

RE: What is bumping?

Dear Marisa,
I think that cardio and strength in the same day can be widely interpreted. Remember, walking to school and playing on the monkey bars are cardio and strength. Overtraining, however, is a real risk and I have found trial and error to be the best way to figure out whether I'm overtraining.

From a functional standpoint, few demanding physical activities in life are exclusively cardio or strength. Therefore it is good to train with both so we have all the ability that we need to perform tasks of daily life, with some left over.

Sometimes a person might want to focus more on a certain weak area. Then it's a good idea to devote an entire session to that area, be it cardio, or strength in one or more body part, or something else.

One reason people say strength and cardio are not good on the same day is that cardio uses up matter in your body as fuel. Usually we imagine that it's only fat, but actually water, muscle tissue and even bone turn into energy to fuel cardio. With the type of working out most of us do (all Cathe's workouts throughout the year), the amounts are miniscule enough to be insignificant. Even less if we eat a good mix of foods.

People trying to bulk up at all costs may shy away from cardio because it can interfere with building big muscles, especially people in a hurry. However, most of us here are at least as interested in fitness for its own sake, as for looks, and in it for the long haul.

In sum, I think cardio and strength in the same day is not bad.

RE: What is bumping?

Thank you for the wonderful response! Very informative. I think that I have to agree that cardio and strength can't be bad to do on the same day. I guess as long as you mix up your routine regularly to keep it fresh, then you are probably just fine. I personally like to do a few strength days, a few cardio, and at least one day with both.
