Can I workout after....

Hey Everyone,

I had blood drawn today. They said "no heavy lifting for two hours" - is that enough time? I have a workout to do this evening and I'm wondering if I can do that...or if I should skip it. I feel okay - no dizzy feelings or light headedness. Just don't want a set back!

:)

Reese-I give blood every 8 weeks and don't usually have a problem with either cardio or weights. Try it. If you feel 'funny', stop and just do it tomorrow instead!

I usually bag the workout after giving blood or do something light like yoga (non-power variety). I really don't think I'm doing my body any favors by stressing it after giving a pint of blood.

If you do workout, I certainly wouldn't do any bicep work. A friend of mine gave blood once and decided to do bicep curls that night. It caused the vein to start bleeding again.

Also be vary of any light headedness. It can come on really fast.

My $.02.

The last time I gave blood I did a circuit workout about 5 hours afterwards. BIG MISTAKE. I don't know what the actual term is, but the veins in the arm I gave blood from all basically ruptured and bruised. My entire left arm--from my wrist to my shoulder was black and blue--it looked like someone had beat the crap out of me. It was not pretty at all and lasted for about 2 weeks.

I was also very weak and lightheaded during the workout. If I were you, I would take a rest day after giving blood (or if it's ok to do so, workout beforehand).

I tried Low Max once after giving blood. About 5-6 hrs had passed. I barely made it halfway through - my arms and legs felt like lead, and I was exhausted. I stopped, of course. And never tried it again. I've never tried lifting weights afterward.

Some people bounce back more quickly, so if you want to try it, you might keep the weights light, and go slowly, just to be safe.

I do a weight workout before I give blood--either the day before, or that morning (if I can donate after my workout). I prefer doing it the morning of my donation, because that gives me the most time to recover--I do cardio the day before and the day after. Yoga is wonderful to do after you give blood, if you go easy on the arm and don't go so vigorous that you get dizzy or lightheaded.

How kind of you to give blood. Now extend the favor to yourself and take a rest day and treat yourself to a little something nice (like a manicure). There will always be tomorrow for Cardio & Weights!

Yeah, I wondered about the vein opening up again...I think I may just walk on the treadmill....or lay here and watch tv....I haven't decided yet (LOL)

I didn't want to responsible for your corruption but since you brought it up...have at it Girl :9

Beavs, you are always the one responsible for corruption. Perhaps we should just call you Corrupter of Innocents or something.

ETA: Oh, and I thought of you last Saturday night when I ordered a margarita and they brought me two. I thought, "too bad Beavs isn't here to give this to." Perhaps we are both spending too much time here....
