Calories burned?

How do people know how many calories you've burned during your workouts? I use a heart rate monitor but have always read that they are inaccurate as far as calories burned goes, so are you all using those figures or are there other watches, gadgets that more accurately track calories burned? I know I shouldn't care about this, know the intensity of your workouts and calories burned after are more important than during, but can't help wanting to know anyway. Yesterday I saw a post with the comment that she had burned 700+ calories during Kickmax - I was floored, according to my polar watch, the most I've ever burned is close to 300 (with LowMax). Would love to know if there is a more accurate way to track them.

This is a good question.
I go by my treadmill. It gives me a calorie burn, but not even sure if it is accurate, but when it says 800 in an hour makes ya feel better.
i have a watch that i do not know how to use.
I think how intense you do the workout is a factor.
Like 6-8 in step.
Put in a little jumps.
I don't run. I elevate my treadmill to 12 and go for an hour at 3.5.
I figure walking at an incline is like running. Lower impact.
MAkes me feel like I can eat though.
I just bought it last week and i lost 2 lbs this week, and i was in a stump.Sooo maybe it is true , maybe not, but as long as it works.
So i say go by how you feel.
Feel like you worked or not.
How heavy is your breathing?
How sweaty are you?
Wish i knew the answer.

I know, it's the muscle you build and I certainly work hard - it's that obsessive side of me that wants to know.

I use the calorie count on my HRM. It has a place to put in height and weight and THR etc. etc., so I'm figuring it's probably fairly close to the truth.

Was it me that you saw who burned 700 calories during Kickmax? I posted the other day that I burned 726, but it was doing a Kickbox mish-mosh that included the Kickmax Blast portion TWICE, plus KPC high intensity drills and BC Kickbox premix.

Yes, it was you - and now that I know what you did, I can't believe you only burned 726. How long did that take?? Might try it someday (when I get KickMax) and am willing to walk like John Wayne for a day or two.

HR monitors are pretty accurate for giving you calories burned if they take into account your HR, weight, height, and some even do resting heart rate. I really think there is no better way to get a good estimate of calorie expenditure.

Hi Caren,

I also posted my calories for Kickmax which was close to Allwildgirl @ 726.I bought a heart rate monitor that offers the feature of calories burnes as stated above which is based on your programmed height and weight.

Every person's calorie expenditure will diiffer slightly not only based on height and weight but also by your resting heart rate and intensity of workout. (I always push myself as far as I can go for example, during a blast...but believe me, I'll modify or slow down to catch my breath).

Having the HR monitor with the calorie feature has been so motivating to me...almost addictive. Since I workout early in the am, I know how many calories I am negative before I even start eating. Since Sept. I have lost 8lbs, slow and steady with the motivation of the watch.

I find it most interesting to see how others are coming in with different workouts. If I see that someone burned a lot during a particular workout or mish-mosh, then I like to ry it. It make sit fun and interesting.

Go for it!

Hey...Shelley...how long did that take??? You're a NUT!!:p Did you have to eat a snack in the middle of the workout??

Also, HRM are pretty accutate if they take into account age, weight, height, etc.

Hi Sarah - yes I'm a nut! I admit it freely. I think it took about 70 minutes, give or take, including warm-up and cool down. I didnt' eat anything. I think if I had I just would have barfoopied it up:p

My heart rate monitor does have the calorie feature with height, weight and age programed in. Though I don't believe mine has a resting heart feature. I do work hard but the calories burned are never above 300 and I must say I feel like it should be more - so when I read that they were not the most accurate way of calculating calories burned I hoped that I was burning a lot more and thought there might be another way. But I've come to my senses. There are at least 10 more DVD's I really want so will spend my money that way.

A heavier person will always burn more calories than a lighter person. My dad can easily burn 800-900 calories in 80 minute workout, but he weighs 250 pounds. I could never burn as many calories as him because he is just so much larger than me. Even if I work 2ce as hard as him, I would never catch up to his calorie expenditure in the same amount of time(if it were a race). It may be that 300 calories is a lot for your body so I wouldn't feel bad about not burning more. It is all relative.

Okay, I just did Lowmax w/u, Lowmax Blast, Imax 3 Blast, GS C&T push-ups and Coremax 1 and apparently I burned 625.

I'm not small though. I don't know how tall you are or how much you weigh or anything, but as Carolyn said, it's quite possible that 300 is a lot for you:)

Caren,

Like you, my calories always seem really low compared to others. I don't think any one video has burned over 500 calories for me. For me, KickMax is barely 300 calories and if I don't give it my all, it could easily be only 200. I'm not tiny either. I'm 5'4, age 34, and weigh between 135-145.

I just got a new HRM (Polar M32) and got to use it on one of my Spinervals tonite (Lean & Mean). Of course after 20 minutes into the workout, I remembered to start the HRM, until then, it was just measuring. I was in my zone for 20 minutes, 30 minute interval workout, and burned 151 calories. I'm 5'2", age 47 and weigh 120. All I can say is wow, those Spinervals really get your heart rate up there! Talk about no impact, high intensity!

Loved it!

Jeanette

According to the Leanness Lifestyle book -- that I think is really very good and informative -- women burn about 7 cal with vigorious exercising. (No weight was given.) For some reason I thought it was more, but wearing the Polar 32 now it sounds just about right unfortunately....
