Calf discomfort during standing lunges

Whenever I do standing lunges my calves give out before I ever really feel it anywhere else. Am I doing something wrong because I find I always have to stop before it becomes excrutiating?

Hi! I am not Cathe and she may have something different to add to this but I thought I'd share a few pointers anyway. Are you keeping your weight in your heel (the heel of the front leg that is)? You should be pushing up through the heels when you lift your body. Also, make sure that your knee is lined up with your ankle on the down phase. If you are feeling the lunges in your calf muscle, my guess is that you are shifting your body weight to the front of your foot which would activate your calf muscle more. Otherwise, my only other thought would be that your calf muscles need to be strengthened more--they are working hard to stabilize your legs and maybe they are just not up to the challenge yet but with practice, they will catch up!

When I first got PH I was feeling the lunges mainly in the quad of my back leg. After watching Cathe very closily, I noticed that I was holding my back foot differently than her. I was not just up on my toe with my heel pointing up like her, but I was more on the ball of my foot with my heel pointing back. Since I changed this, I can really feel these in all the right places.

Hope this helps, Good luck!!

Oh thank you! I was seriously coming on line just now to post this very question! I just did Leaner Legs (okay Meaner Legs) and during the static lunges, my the calf of my back leg gave out before the quad of my front one did! I always stay on the ball of my foot. That must be why I feel discomfort! I will go back next time and really concentrate on staying on my toe with my heel pointed up. Thanks again!
