Bringing up the Rear Check-In

Today I did 10 minutes on the trampoline and GG strength w/o #2; I tried the GB with my feet elevated on my step platform and I think I like that a little better then on the floor. Thanks for reminding me about this!

Julie- Great job!! That was me yesterday except I talked myself into staying in bed, I can be pretty convincing when I want to be.

I'm thinking that's too low for the box squat too it's really hard to get back up with a barbell on my shoulders; I'm going to try 4 maybe 5 risers next time and see how that goes. I'm a little taller at 5'4".

Carolyn that glute burn and DOMS is almost addicting isn't it?

Have a good night!

This morning I did my hip thrust challenge which was barbell bridges, 2 sets of max reps with 95 pounds. I got 15 and 13 reps. I think I figure out a few reasons why I really don’t like bridges. 1) I always slide backwards while doing them. I need to figure out how to anchor my shoulders so I don’t slide. 2) Because I slide backwards, my hair always comes out of my pony tail and then I have to redo it. I know that is a petty and lazy. Anyway after those I did Supersets.

Amanda Maybe I need to do my GB that way too. Although I don’t know if that will solve the sliding problem. I think of box squats as being similar to Cathe’s sit ‘n stands except without the freeze and hold right above the box. Cathe is about 5’2” and she uses 5 risers for sit ‘n stands so I definitely think going to 4 or 5 at your height would help. I love the wrist curls in GS BSB! It always makes my forearms burn, burn.

Carolyn I have the Getting Started (or maybe it is Getting Stronger) Horizontal Conditioning that a friend on another checkin gave me. I haven’t done it yet. I am a little nervous as it was a lot of being horizontal (I know, didn’t see that one coming huh!)

Have a great day!

JulieI tend to slide back a little too with the GB I do mine on carpet so it's not too bad; are you on a tile or wood floor that would be annoying to be sliding all over the place? I hate having to redo my ponytail too; Tabatacise gets me every time- all that jumping.

CarolynNo I don't have a spin bike; I wish I did because those look like fun workouts.

I got super excited when I checked the DOTD today because it looked like Cross Train Xpress at first glance, however once I looked closer I saw that it was Cardio Kicks :(

What's Horizontal Conditioning?

This morning I did 2 sets of single leg hip thrusts with max holds at the top. I got 35 seconds on each set which is 5 seconds longer than last time! After that I did Slide & Glide. Not one of my more favorite workouts but I did it. I know I haven’t even started the first month of Get Glutes but I was wondering when we get to see month 2? Do they only make the next month available 4 weeks after your start date?

Carolyn When you say prominent oblique muscles, did it make your waist thicker or just the definition show more? I do have a spin bike. Best purchase I have ever made. I love spinning. I bought it when Cathe announced Cycle Max. I had never done spinning until then so I took a big chance and it paid off.

Amanda Yep I workout on laminate flooring. I am going to try putting a set of risers up against the wall and anchor my shoulders up against them and see if that works. Oh yes, too much jumping makes my ponytail fall too. You would think with how much I complain, I wouldn’t enjoy my workouts.

Have a great day!

Morning !

Amanda -
The first time I did those box squats my step was already set up from doing weight work so it was at 5 risers + the top . It still was so hard that I never thought about trying to lower it . You're so right about the vest . With the weights we are using now , I almost HAVE to use it because my hands / forearms start to give out . When I did GG ST w/o#3 , I wore the 30Lb. vest and used my 15's db's to =60lbs. Although I could probably hold that on my back , my arms aren't there yet .
Julie -
You're right the GG w/o's do feel incomplete in certain areas , mainly upper body . I hear you about the body part splits and programs in general - after awhile I noticed that I've started to miss my other DVD's and the freedom to just do whatever looks good that day . My compromise is putting together a rotation for myself when Xtrain in over . It's going to be a combo of Cathe's strength w/o's [ 2 that I haven't done yet ] mixed with mostly Hiit w/o's that I can choose from . I want to get this in before I start STS .
Carolyn ,
I'm excited to hear about HC ! I know a lot of people on the forum are doing it and it's supposed to be killer - mostly core and upper body , if I understand correctly . Which w/o gave you those DOMS in your glutes ? I feel like I need to push harder because I'm not getting sore like I want to . Amanda's right - that feeling is totally addicting !
The barbell came yesterday ! It's a total monster but I love it already .
Have a great day !

Carolyn ,
It could be B&G - I really miss that one !
Today I did Xtrn - Burn Sets B's & T's and then TTM Extreme . I normally try not to do cardio on the same day as heavy weights but today I needed that extra drain , if you know what I mean . Love the cardio when I'm hyper ...
Have a great night !

This morning I did Intensity Hiit and Bootcamp premix; tonight I did 10 minutes on the trampoline and GG strength w/o #3.

Phew I don't feel so bad about the box squat now; on the demo it looked like Kellie was going pretty low and I only had 3 sets of risers so that's what I did the first two times. I just got 2 more sets-much more doable.

Kate Yay for your barbell!
What strength series do you think you're going to put in your rotation after XT?

Julie That's a great idea I bet the risers will anchor you

Yep, seems like they send you a new w/o program every 4 weeks; I guess they do that to keep you on track and not jump around??

I agree with you guys that GG on it's own doesn't seem like it would be enough but I am really liking it as supplemental.

Good night!

This morning I did more hip thrust challenge and Muscle Endurance. The HT challenge was 3 sets of 20 barbell bridges with 110 lbs. I anchored my shoulders against some risers against the wall. It helped but I just wasn’t having a good session this morning. I kept feeling it more in my quads than my glutes. I think next time I will try elevating me feet.

Kate I have always been envious of people who can go with the flow with their workouts. I have to have a rotation to follow or else I end up not doing anything. If it is on the calendar though, I do it.

Carolyn Thanks for the clarification on HC! I would love to have more defined obliques so I may have to figure out how to add it in.

Amanda I think the demo from Kellie was at an angle that made it look like the box was low. If I remember correctly, she is around 5’7” or maybe a little taller. Ok, I am just antsy to look ahead to what the other months look like. I will work on my patience muscle.

Have a great day!

Carolyn I have been heavy hip thrusting since April and increased the weight by 10 pounds every 2-3 weeks. For some reason I cannot comfortably go as heavy on bridges. They just feel awkward to me an I can't figure out why. Keep at it and you will be thrusting mega pounds before you know it.

Hi guys !
Amanda -
The rotation I'm playing with is 3 months and made up of Gym Styles for month#1 , Pyramid for #2 and Slow and Heavy for the 3rd . I've only done Pyramid and Legs from Gym Styles so it's a nice way to get to know them and hopefully not loose any of the muscle strength I gained from Xtrain .
I finally got to use the barbell yesterday for a few excersises in GG strength w/o #1 -
Whoa ! I really liked using it but it'll take some time for me to get good at it . How are you doing box squats with it ???? Since I was using about 65 Lbs. I could only use it for the floor work - which I loved ! For the Good Mornings I used the bar [ 45 Lbs. ].
Julie -
You're a great inspiration with your weights ! That sounds like a really good plan to increase 10 Lbs. every 2-3 weeks . I can see trying that with my LB w/o's . Also , I know what you mean about the rotations . Xtrain was my first and I almost feel spoiled because everything was worked out for me - just play the DVD and do the work !
Carolyn -
Those HT's will come along - It's taken me months to really feel what I'm supposed feel while doing them . In fact , yesterday was the first time I did them [ 65 lbs. ] and felt it ONLY in my glutes ! I did 100 reps challenge and actually took a couple breaks because I had to - YAY !

PS-
Yesterday was Xtrain Legs , then GG w/o #1 . Box squats 3x5 60Lbs. [ 30 Lb. vest and Db's ] ,Single leg HT 3x15 65 lbs. w/Barbell ,Good morning 3x15 45lbs.w/Barbell , Landmine press 3x15 45lbs.w/ Barbell . Then finished it off with HT 100 rep. 65 Lbs. w/Barbell . It was a really great w/o - nice DOMS today !

Kate Great job with GG w/o 1!!
I have the Ez Curl bar so mine is a lot smaller then the Olympic bar. I could see the Olympic bar needing some time to get used to. Your rotation sounds good! I just finished up with a month of Gym Styles and next week I'm going to do mainly cardio with GG and probably 1 other full body strength w/o. Then I might do Slow and Heavy; I just got that one when it was DOTD and haven't done it yet. I love GS and Pyramid you'll enjoy those. The burn sets with the band really get you in GS. I find GS Chest and Triceps is really challenging-there are a lot of pushups and then all the chest work right after- I'm usually shaking by the end of the chest work!

Have a good night!

Amanda -
It should be a fun/hard rotation with some variety . I'm also putting in a total body strength w/o each week so that all muscle groups get worked twice a week as well , for instance , Gym Styles on 3 days and then something like Muscle Max at the end of the week . The EZ Curl sounds really good - I thought that's what I'd get at first . I went with the Olympic mostly because I have the dream of owning the whole rack one day ,' sigh ', ...
Carolyn -
Isn't it crazy that it - almost - feels like we didn't work hard enough without the DOMS ? I know that sometimes I feel like I killed myself in a w/o and could not have worked harder , but then the next day - nothing . Doesn't seem fair !

Have a great night !

Oops on me not posting over the weekend. No excuses, just didn’t do it. I did do my hip thrust challenge on Saturday: 3 sets of 5 1-leg hip thrusts with 5 second hold at top. Then it was cleaning and errands. Sunday was 3 sets of 8 hip thrusts with 190 lbs. and then Total Body Trisets Total Body premix. This morning was 3 sets of the hip thrust march for 15, 15, and 12 reps and then Cardio & Weights. I will now go through the rest of my day singing Buttercup.

Kate I am so excited about your barbell! You will get used to it pretty quick with practice. I have to say that you are pretty impressive with doing single leg hip thrusts with 65 lbs. I have done them with a 20 lb. kettlebell but not tried it any higher. I only have dumbbells up to 40 so if I did need to go higher I would have to start using a barbell which seems scary balance-wise to me.

Carolyn Don’t you hate it when you work hard and look forward to DOMS and then nothing. I know the absence of DOMS does not mean that the muscles didn’t work or will get stronger but still there is something nice about that soreness as a reminder of my hard work.

Amanda Slow & Heavy is good but I wish Cathe would have done 6 counts on the eccentric and 2 on the concentric since the eccentric portion of the move is supposed to give you the bigger bang for your buck. I am really starting to get excited about finishing the 30 day hip thrust challenge so I can get started on Get Glutes! You all are making me jealous with seeing you do those workouts.

Have a great day!

Hi Julie -
What a monster that barbell is ! It's a great challenge so I'm loving it , but having 7ft of steel on my back can be unintentionally hilarious ! The single leg HT w/65 Lbs. was super hard and I was going into failure by the end of each set , but I wanted those DOMS - Somehow balance was not an issue , which is strange because I'm usually sensitive to that...Wow - 190 for the HT - That's so cool !
Carolyn ,
I haven't come across the hypers yet , but the ball sounds like what I would use to modify them . I totally agree that Bret should do a dvd !!! It seems like the logical next step for him and his crew , but I know it's a huge jump in $$$ for anything like film production ...

I love Fall too - I always get excited when the cold air comes ....

Have a great night !

Hi everyone!
Today I did GG strength #1 I used 45lbs for box squats and good mornings, body weight for single leg HT, 50lbs for landmine press and threw in an extra set of the band abductions and Swiss ball jack knife.

Kate you are really doing awesome; I second that it's really impressive to do single leg HT with 65lbs!

Julie Yay you're almost done with the challenge; 190 is fantastic!

Carolyn I'm so excited to get CTX and Pure Strength; I can't wait to do Leaner Legs! I'm excited for the new Cathe's too.

There haven't been any hypers in GG month 1 but I would also just use the ball.

Anyone else feel like they don't push themselves as hard as they should? I tend to get comfortable with a weight and stick with it-I need to push harder sometimes.

I also love fall; perfect temps here today!

Have a good night

Crazy work getting in the way of me posting again! ARGH!!! Anyway, I did get my hip thrust challenge in yesterday with a pyramid of heavy HT: 10@180 lbs., 6@205 lbs., 4@215 lbs., and 20@110 lbs. Then I did STS Total Body Compound (No Core) premix. This morning was 2 sets of isolhold single leg HT for 40 seconds plus Athletic Training.

Carolyn Oh yea! Leaner Legs or Deadlift Heaven as I call it! I love that one. I think you should give Strong Curves a try. You will be surprised at how much you feel it. I only did the lower body program and added on Cathe upper body and cardio so I still got my Cathe fix in there.

Kate Olympic barbells are huge; 7 feet is quite long. That was one of the reasons I didn’t get the Olympic set when I first bought my barbell because my room is small and I am very short and thought 7 feet was way too long for me. I think I could have adjusted to it and now I regret not getting it.

Amanda Well I still have about 12 days left of the challenge. I can really tell a difference. The first week I wasn’t feeling it but this last week and a half has had my butt talking back to me every day. I am excited for you getting PS and CTX. I like the Upper Body DVD in CTX as well as Leaner Legs. I think I have the opposite problem. I tend to push myself too hard. Over the summer, I really wanted to increase my conventional deadlift and I went too far and ended up hurting myself and having to take it easy for a while. Now I try to just go in small increments like 1-2 pounds for single limb and 5 pounds for two limb moves.

Have a great day!
