Breast Lump

Hi all. I saw a breast surgeon about 3 years ago and had an ultrasound of a lump in my right breast and I was told it was nothing to worry about. I am recently experiencing pain in that breast and the lump feels bigger and oddly shaped. I called my OBGYN today to make an appointment, but they weren't in the office. I will call first thing tomorrow, but I'm really scared. Has anyone had a similar experience? Lynda

I havent, but a co-worker has. She had the same symptoms. She went to the doctor and had a needle biopsy done and everything turned out fine. They say 80% of breast lumps turn out to be nothing. Please try not to fret over this. I think you will be fine.

Thank you so much for replying. I'm trying to convince myself that it was nothing before, so it's probably just a bigger nothing this time. It just seems like it's harder to deal with once the sun goes down at night. My mind starts to run away with itself . . .

No Lynda I haven't, but wanted you to know I will be thinking of you & praying for you that it is still nothing to worry about. It must be sooo frightening. Keep us posted.

Thank you for the thoughts and prayers. There is nothing more powerful than that! I will keep you posted, and thanks again for being there. I think it's just what I needed tonight.

You're VERY welcome! Why is it that nights are the hardest??? I have been dealing with an injury that has sidelined my workouts bigtime since November and for some reason when I get in bed at night, is when my mind goes crazy on me! I feel like my life has been turned upside down. Then, morning comes and I press-on! :) You hang in there and I will say EXTRA prayers for you "in bed" tonight! ;-) HUGS!!!

I had the same experience last fall. I had a lump that had shown up on a mammogram for several years, and last fall I started having a lot of discomfort with it. They did an ultrasound and found that it was just a fibroid. The doctor was great - he explained that the discomfort can be caused by hormonal changes (which explains why I felt it more right before my period) and that a fibroid is not related to cancer and does not become cancer. Since then, I have read that many doctors recommend Vitamin E to shink the fibroid (800mg a day). I've been taking it since last fall, and haven't had any discomfort in months. I'll have another mammogram in September and will be interested to see if it has shrunk.

So...DON'T worry! I'm sure everything will be fine. Please let us know after you see your doctor! We'll be thinking about you!

Hi Lynda,

Said a prayer for you. That situation is always scary but remember, chances are it's nothing, especially since you already had it checked out a few years ago. Those darn hormones can do all kinds of strange things, including sore breasts and changes in benign lumps that are perfectly common. Keep us posted.

Blessings,
Denise

I just wanted to say that I've heard that if the lump is cancerous there will be no pain. So since it is hurting you maybe all is okay.

I am saying a prayer for you.

Thanks, everyone, for the good thoughts and prayers. I called the doctor and made an appointment. They couldn't fit me in until March 9th, so I'll have some waiting to do. On the up-side, I've had almost no discomfort today, so maybe there is something to be said for hormonal changes triggering pain, as I'm just passing that time of month. I will keep you all posted as I try to plug on and not obsess too much until I know more. Lynda

Oh Lynda I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. And you are right prayers are very powerful:). Maybe it is just hormonal changes. Please let us know ASAP of your visit with your doctor.

Hi Lynda,
Just jumping into this thread because I am an oncology nurse and we see ALOT of breast cancer. Although I cannot even begin to diagnose you, only a biopsy can, I can tell you that I have never seen a lump that was cancerous be painful. I have had women with stage II cancer of the breast with still no pain. I agree with the others, you most likely have a fibrous cyst.
But, again, I can't tell you for sure!. Please do keep us posted!!
Wendy

Thanks Wendy!

Not Lynda, but that sure helps to ease my mind for her! ;-) Thanks for sharing.

When I was 30, I had a lump. The doctor wanted to do an ultra sound and mamagram to watch it. I told him, there is a lump that doesn't belong, take it out. It wasn't cancerous, but my doctor told me it was a good thing I had it removed.

I never did have a mamagram until I turned 40. I'm now 43. Like people have said, if it hurts, it probably isn't cancerous. My mom had breast cancer a year ago (left breast removed). She had no pain. The mamagram didn't pick anything up when she had one 8 months before. She's lucky when she went in for a checkup, the doctor caught it.

My prayers are with you. Hang in there. I know it's scary.

Hi Lynda,

I wanted to let you know that I have had 3 lumps removed in my right breast. My symptoms were painful and yes I was scared to death when I found the first one. They have all been removed and were all benign(don't know if I spelled that right). The first one I had was when I was 16 years old. Imagine the fear I had finding a lump at such a young age. I happen to have lumpy breasts anyway, but those small ones only hurt when I have PMS. The large ones were very painful and had to get removed. They did try to drain those, but they didn't have any fluid in them. I am 31 now and haven't had a large cyst since I was 27. That does not mean that I won't get one in the future. IMO your symptoms of the lumps sound like the ones I had. I know 2 breast cancer survivors and their lumps were not painful. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!!

Thanks, again, everyone for all of the encouraging and supportive words. I am seeing things in a slightly saner light these past few day, and I've been trying to keep myself busy chasing after my kids and just living my life. From what you all are saying, this will probably turn out to be something benign; however, I will be very relieved to have someone confirm it for me. I think this is the first time I've actually looked forward to an OB/GYN appointment. I'll keep you posted. Lynda

Hi -

I guess you've gotten back to the OB/GYN by now. I had a benign lump removed many years ago, and the only comment I can make is that I'm surprised your surgeon wasn't more aggressive 3 years ago in removing and/or biopsying the lump. I guess maybe you could find that encouraging now, i.e., if it wasn't anything to worry about then, it probably isn't now either. But I would insist on finding out its composition, however it can be done, for your own peace of mind. I was a wreck until I knew for sure, even though I'd been told from the start that it probably "wasn't anything," so I understand your fears completely. Good luck.
