Breaking in new shoes?

Aquajock

Hey, gang! I the world's absolute worst in terms of replacing worn-out shoes for cardio work, and I finally had to dig deep and get a new pair of Rykas (on their way) for step and hi/lo etc.

It truly has been so long with my current pairs of shoes that I can't remember if and how I broke them in, or whether I just slapped 'em on and went to town with the vids / DVDs.

Does anyone here break their shoes in in a certain way before using them for impact-oriented cardio? Suggestions, please.

A-Jock

Are they leather? Maybe you could try baseball glove oil to soften them. Don't know what to do about the soles though. The only way I know of to break in new shoes is to actually wear them.:p

Which ones did you order? I've got to buy new ones, too. It's been a while since I bought shoes for step, etc., but I think I just went for it. I also buy Spenco inserts to protect my heels.

I have several pairs of Ryka's and I really don't go through a "break-in" process with them. I just start using them. And since I have several pair, I like to alternate them.

Hey, CinDee, I bought the Ryka Rhythm II shoes for hi/lo aerobics; I feel if these work for high-usage hi/lo they'd be just as good for step and kickbox. If I like them I'll get another pair so I can alternate. Not cheap at $85.00 a pair not including shipping, so I'm consuming with care here.

Hey A-Jock!! I just 'slap 'em on and go to town' but have always purchased from stores and been able to have a good walk around in them before deciding. I have never had a problem with blisters or sore feet with new shoes. I never realize how tired my old shoes are until I get my dogs into the new ones and ahhhhh, my feet feel refreshed and I can jump faster, higher and stronger. I know it's recommended to replace your shoes every 6 months if you workout regularly but always go over a year without replacing (that recommendation probably comes from the manufacturers so....). I am pretty rigid about not wearing my workout shoes for anything but workouts.
Good luck with those shoes but watch out for low hanging lights and fans one you get jumping in them:) Enjoy!!

Take Care

I just put them on and go to town A-jock.(that's of course, after I look like a fool jumping around the store for 10 min.:+ ). No matter what brand or how comfortable they are, it still seems to take a couple weeks for my feet to get used to them.

I never have had to brek in a pair of Ryka's studio aerobics sshoes. They don't reqquire it. I just slap them on and go. First few times may feel odd just beause of the different cut of the shoe from what you are used to: you soon get used to it.

Thanks, A-Jock. I'll only be able to buy one pair, but that's okay since Cathe is only a day or two of my cardio. Going to check out the site...

I also never break in a pair of shoes. I actually read somewhere that if you have to break in your shoes, they are the wrong shoes for your feet. You should put them on, jump up and down, and walk around in them. If they hurt your feet, they are not for you. They should feel comfortable from the beginning.

Now having said that, I know that is now always the case. The last pair of shoes I bought felt fantastic in the store. I fell in love with them immediately, and I absolutely cannot exercise in these shoes. They feel terrible for exercising, like maybe not enough padding or something.

A-Jock, I just slap mine on and go to town!! I haven't ever had a problem. I use New Balance 608's now, and they're good to go with the first try! I replace them about every three months, or when I start to feel that telltale twinge in my heel during cardio/step workouts. Don't EVER want to deal with bilateral plantar fascitis again, thank you very much!!

A-Jock I just slap mine on too. I've had a failure or two though. So far the only brand I've ever been able to work out in is Reebok...I assume it's just the particular shape they use or whatever. I've been thinking about trying Rykas though, since everyone seems to love them, including Cathe. So I think I'll try the ones you chose, since you are one smart cookie!;-)
Enjoy your new shoes!

A-Jock, I wear Ryka's for both running and aerobics. I have never had to break them in, they are perfect from the get-go! I say if you have to break them in you have the wrong shoes! :) :)

Edited to add: I actually also have some Ryka cross-trainers as well so I think I have about 6 pairs of Rykas. They were all perfect immediately!

A-Jock,
I just bought new shoes. I took three pair back after trying them out at home. I think your shoes should be comfortable when you first put them on. I am sure they wondered why I kept coming back with the shoes. I had heel slipage, toe numbness, and basic overall tightness. I even went to a shoe store and had my feet measured for the right shoes. I spent $109.00 for their shoes and did not find them that comfortable. I tend to keep shoes till they are basically falling apart. I hate shoe shopping. Basically I think you should not have to break them in. They sould feel good when you put them on your feet.

Hi Aquajock,

Like Diane Sue, I agree - they should feel good when you put them on your feet. I'm about due for a new pair of shoes too, and like Diane sue, I hate shoe shopping.

cheers

I bet I'm as bad or worse than you for buying new shoes! I baby my workout shoes and they never see anything but my workout floor. I hate buying new shoes because I have very hard to fit feet. I did just buy new shoes after 8 years!!! of my Nikes. I bought Ryka Rythms here:

http://www.onlineshoes.com/synopsispage.asp?type=brand&brandid=51&brandcatid=406&gen=w

$65 and free shipping. When I first got them I thought I would have to send them back. My husband said I was just too used to the old worn out shoes and I should just give them a workout. So I did. That one workout seemed to break them or my feet in just fine, and now I LOVE them!!!! I'm very happy with them and so are my picky, old, tired, achey feet. Normally I would agree that a shoe has to feel good the minute you put it on, but in this one case I was just too used to my old worn out shoes I guess.

Hey Aquajock. I just bought a pair of Ryka~ Supra is the model name. They felt great right from the start.

Now the last time I bought Rykas that wasn't the case, but I went to a DSW and just took the only pair in my size ( I was out of town and forgot my workout shoes) Those took 5 or 6 workouts to feel OK. They probably weren't the right shoe for me.
This new pair of Ryka Supras feels great except for when I run on the treadmill. But I have a pair of Sacouny (sp?) running shoes that work for running.

Any way how did you make out?

Another slapper here. Like some of the others, I walk around a lot in the store and make sure they feel comfy.

Have you tried them out yet?

Joanne

Thanks for all your responses, people! Jo-Jo, haven't gotten them yet; have had to make do with my old-timers. I've popped a bit of a bunion on each foot near the big toe, so I had to go to a 7-1/2 from my traditional 7. Getting old sucks.
