breakfast

HI
I was wondering if eating a multigrain (Thomas's) bagel (lowfat, 280 calories, 11g protein, 4g fiber) will keep me full longer and help prevent my sugar cravings later in the day than a minibreakfast of a waffle (90 cal, lowfat, some protein) and water?
Thanks

Staying full

I love this topic, because I discovered a study done by the University of Sydney which found the foods that keep you fuller longest. Potatoes are #1, and OATMEAL is #3!!! Therefore, oatmeal is my stay-full breakfast of choice. Pancakes are a close second, but with sugar free syrup and no butter. You can make whole wheat pancakes, ya know!

Check out this study! I feel like I found a goldmine since I get hungry a lot with my exercise schedule.

oatmeal?

Do you mean the plain Quaker oatmeal in the round 'cylinder' box? I'm sure that's what you mean since the flavored kind is sugary (and that's why it tastes so good!), but the regular oatmeal tastes awful!!
Do you have a recipe for how to make whole-wheat pancakes? Do they taste 'normal'?
Thanks

The study doesn't specifiy....

...plain or not, but I'd guess that oatmeal is oatmeal, so liven it up any way it suits your fancy.

I know I have a recipe at home for whole wheat pancakes....I'll have to look it up. Food excites me!!! Good thing I like to work out!!!

whole wheat pancakes

I have a recipe for banana pancakes that I make with part white flour and part whole wheat flour - they are very good.
I agree with honeybunch - oatmeal is oatmeal. I think it is the complex carbs that fill you up.

Hi Bambam! Yes the bagel will keep you full but maybe try eating only half of it with a hard-boiled egg. I also eat shredded wheat cereal w/blueberries and FF milk and about 1/2 hr. later a banana. I'd like you to try looking in your local library or the web site for Gary Null. He has a Ph.D in nutrition and I checked out his new book which gives you wonderful breakfast recipes. I'm emailing you this from work so I don't have the recipes handy but I can email you tomorrow with them. Happy eating! Kathy

oatmeal

Hey there. i almost never post, but i wanted to add my 2 cents about oatmeal. i know i'm weird, but it's one of my favourite foods!!! the old fashioned kind is GREAT... i eat it with butter and salt. okay, i know butter is not great for you, but i only use a teaspoon of that 50% butter. Oatmeal is also good with brown sugar and a little butter. and maybe bananas.

and it really DOES last a looooooong time in your stomach!

other ways to eat oatmeal

I get my oatmeal at a health food store. It tends to be a little fresher. I can really smell the difference when I'm cooking it. I also put dried apricots in while it's cooking. It only takes about 2 halves to make it really flavorful. The apricots just melt into oatmeal. Delicious! A little cinnamon is good also. Another thing I always use is a ground up flaxseed meal. I know it sounds gross but it really improved the flavor of the oatmeal, much to my surprise when I tried it. It gives the oatmeal a toasty flavor. Plus I use a little maple syrup.

So there are a few things that can really add flavor to oatmeal. I eat it everyday and love it.

another way to do oatmeal

I cook about 1/3 cup of old fashioned oatmeal (not the quick stuff) in 2/3 cup of vanilla soy milk and a handful of flaxseed. Then when it is ready, I add a tbsp of wheat germ, a tbsp of raisins, and a tbsp of pecans or walnuts. Sometimes, I even add a tbsp of soy protein powder.

I find the soy milk sweetens the oatmeal so that I don't need to add brown sugar on it at all.

I found this delicious recipe for oatmeal in an issue of Shape mag a few years ago. (something about how cave people might have eaten but hey it works for me).

Oatmeal

I know oatmeal is the best way to start the day, but I really have a tough time getting it down. These cooking idea's sound good, but do they really make the oatmeal taste better?, I have tried putting apples and cinnamon in while cooking and still couldn't get it down. So now what I do is have 1 egg and 2 whites for breakfast with whole grain bread. Does anyone have any other good suggestions???

I am soooo.......

Hooked on Flaxseed in my yogurt every day, but never thought about putting it into my oatmeal which I love. I love a little brown sugar & maple syrup in it too. Kind of defeats the goodness of Oatmeal, doesn't it? I'll try the flaxseed next time and leave out the sweets!!!

Lots of great suggestions

Those are all great suggestions. I try to eat something different everyday. Sometimes oatmeal-not the sweetened or quick stuff. How could anyone not love oatmeal? There's a great recipe for Old Fashioned Pancakes at the FoodTV Website. I use soy milk. Have you tried Silk Soy Milk by White Wave? It's so good I can drink it straight. Also I use Omega 3 fortified eggs or ground flax seed in the recipe. You can substitute half a cup of whole wheat flour for the white flour or mix and match. These things become so healthy it's unbelievable. My kids never know the difference! For those whole grained bagels and English Muffins, try a little peanut butter or some other fat. If you combine carbs, fat and protein, foods have more staying power. Be sure to go for thoses monounsaturated fats though. You are good kids for eating your breakfast!

Oatmeal

I really wish that I lovee oatmeal, as I know it is so good for us, but I was forced to eat it when I was a child, what I didn't finish for breakfast I got cold out of the fridge (lumpy) for lunch, and that is all I got for lunch. I had a stepmother who got her kicks out of this. Now I gag when I try to eat it!

Don't eat it!

I would say that if it has negative associations for you, liberate yourself from oatmeal and never eat it again. That's one of the great things about being a grown-up. You have autonomy.

Also, there are plenty of other healthy breakfast foods out there so don't sweat it, pick something else!
