I just finished "Green for Life" by Victoria Boutenko. It talks about the benefits of greens and of green smoothies in particular. I got mine through Amazon, but they also sell it on the website www.rawfamily.com .

Very interesting, with good references to studies as well as personal anecdotes.

Convinced me to order a Vitamix and I've got one on the way. I tried making a smoothie with a leaf of kale in it, but my Magic Bullet doesn't blend it up as well as the Vitamix will. It was pretty good, though.

I was thinking of getting a juicer, but didn't like the idea of extracting juice and throwing out the fiber, and my Magic Bullet is getting a bit old, so I think of the Vitamix as replacing both of those, as well as doing some food processor tasks. In the long run, it will also be more cost effective to blend my own green drinks than to buy dehydrated green drink blends. It also will last a looong, looong time, from what I've heard.

Thanks for the heads up Kathryn. I'm going to pick up that book for sure.

I haven't picked up a Vitamix 5000 only because my old L'Equip 228 works great....it does smoothies with spinach, kale, nuts or absolutely anything I put in it (even solid frozen bananas). It actually rated higher in consumers, is less than 1/3 the price and "most important to me"....is dishwasher safe (Consumers stated that the Vitamix was not and I use mine every day). My only complaint is the top is snug.... but I found out that is very important when you put hot foods in it...they seem to expand more with pressure and you need the top on tight so the food doesn't get thrown out with the force of the motor (I almost made that mistake once so now I make sure the top is put on tight;)). I've seen people debating about the benefits of a Vitamix over a K-tec blender, but K-Tec wasn't listed in comsumers to compare. I have also read some posts from people who have both and they like the K-Tec better because it is faster, but they say both are very noisy. I think I will just wait until my blender dies before I look into a new one only because it works wonderfully so far... plus I'm lazy and I can't see myself washing it out by hand every day;)

Robin:)
ETA: I did read that some people had their old Vitamix 4500 for a good 12 years before they replaced so they do tend to last a good long time. :)

I *am* the dishwasher, so that's a moot point for me!

I've never heard of the l'Equip, just the Vitamix and the K-Tec.
I know they are both very noisy, so maybe I'll keep my earplugs in the kitchen. It will probably scare the heck out of my 'scaredy cat" Rascal, but he got used to the Magic Bullet, and it's rather noisy.
