Body Gem/Med Gem

Has anyone here had experience using these devices? They are supposed to measure your BMR. There's only two places that offer the service near me and they're about an hour away; one place charges $40 for the test, another $20. I was wondering if the "educated crowd" considers them worth the trouble. I'm a real numbers person and right now it seems like I can't eat more than 1500 calories to lose weight, maybe if the machine tells me that's the way it is I'll believe it.

Thanks.

Tami

I not only am familiar with them, I own one. They most definitely are worth the test because unlike the equations that estimate resting metabolic rate, the Gems measure actual oxygen consumption at rest, giving you a true calculation of metabolic rate.

The equations are very rough estimates--they take factors that are less important (age and weight) into consideration, while totally neglecting the most important factors (lean muscle mass and hormonal levels).

Info on resting metabolic rate can be used to determine all sorts of things in addition to how many calories you expend at rest. For example, an increase in resting metabolic rate over time can be an indicator of increasing lean muscle mass. It also tells you the caloric level below which you don't want to cut your calories if you are trying to drop a few--an intake below your RMR will result in a slowing of your metabolic rate.

Please e-mail me if I can answer any questions you may have aout the Body Gem. Take care!

Hi Marybeth,

Do you administer these tests? Where are you located if you don't mind me asking? If you would rather not say that is fine.

Thanks for all your valuable info-
Kathy

Hi, Kathy,
You are most welcome for the info--I'd also be glad to e-mail you a copy of the handouts we provide on RMR.

Yes, I do testing. I'm in Cocoa, FL.

Thanks for getting back to me Marybeth-I would love a copy of the handout that you have: my e-mail is [email protected].

I am in MA so I guess I will have to find someone around here who does the Body Gem.

Thanks again-
Kathy:)

Kathy, if you go to the website www.healthetech.com and click on the body gem it will give you a list of places in your state that have it.

Thanks for all the info Maribeth, looks like I'm going to have to give this thing a try. Right now, I can't seem to lose weight if I eat over 1500 calories a day. At 5'3" and 150 lbs. that seems low to me but I guess the machine won't lie! I'd like a copy of the handout also, my e-mail is [email protected]. Thanks again.

Thank you so much-
