Body fat measurements

What does everyone use to measure their body fat? I know ideally I should have someone do it for me, but I don't belong to a gym.

I tried mybodycomp.com but I got a different reading than on my friends Tanita scale. Has anyone tried an Omron body fat analyzer, the one you grip in your hands?

I'm so confused!!

Thanks,

I've used calipers to measure my body fat for a long time now. You can get manual calipers at fwonline I think. I just bought some digital calipers that I really like but I'm glad I learned how to measure using manual. I have a Tanita scale that measures body fat, but it's awful! It tells me I'm obese every morning (!!) so I don't like it much. My skinfold caliper measurements calculate out to about 18 percent body fat which is much more like it.

Calipers are probably the best at-home bodyfat measurement device. Your local gym or highschool may also be able to perform underwater measurements which are the most accurate. The devices that measure electrical resistance in your body such as the Tanita scale are awful and are too dependent on other variable besides body fat.

I use Gap jeans, size one & size two. I know when I'm wearing size two my body fat is low, & when I'm wearing size one my body fat is lower. I also have a couple of size zeros for my really low body fat phases.:p

Seriously, I haven't had my body fat measured in about 12 years. I can see how you might want to use it to chart progress, but I have lots of other ways to do that so it's superfluous for me.

The TANITA scale must use a whole different measurement. If you look at their recommendations, they don't match up with regular body fat percentage recommendations. I think it's like apples and oranges--you have to use the right scale. But still, it's aggrivating to look at the scale and see that high of a number! I have manual calipers, but I'd like to have mine done again to see how accurately I'm measuring.

Good post, thanks!

Hi everybody!

I would like to add a question to this thread. We had a fitness fair at work last year and they used a Omron Pro Fat Analyzer to measure my bodyfat. Are these devices accurate and reliable?

Thanks in advance
Kristine
