Boca Bummer

Recently, my daughter went veggie and I bought her Morning Star Farms brakfast links but they were a bit dry and tasted like fake meat. I then bought her Boca Burger links instead and I loved them. I was reading the ingredients yesterday and they contain coconut palm oil, a highly saturated fat, which is fine but they also contain partially hydrogenated oil. This bummed me out so much since I have a real trans fats aversion and I never dreamed I'd find in in a Boca product!

They contain 4 grams of fat, 2 of which is sat fat, so it's probably ony 1 to 2 grams of trans fat and I read labels religiously to avoid the stuff, so please tell me I am being foolsih to eliminate them based on a tiny consumption of trans fats. In a healthy diet, a small amount of icky stuff is fine, right?

Right! Look at all the high quality protein you're getting with Boca products. And its vegetarian, so it's good for animals and the environment. One evil thing I learned about Boca is that they were bought be Kraft foods, which I think is owned by Proctor and Gamble or RJR/Nabisco of one of those other multi-billion dollar multinationals, so they are mega-corporate now. Oh well, they still don't cross my "too evil" threshold. I love Boca. But my favorite veggie burger is Morningstar Grillers Prime. They are amazingly delicious.

Mmmmm. Gardenburger is yummy. MorningStar Farms has some really good products for veggies, and although it's been a while since I've bought them, I remember them being quite a bit lower in overall fat than Boca.

I meant to add that the way you cook them can affect the dryness. I know it sounds crazy, but the Gardenburgers are best simply microwaved long enough to thaw (about 1-1.5 minutes in my microwave) or skillet "fry" to thaw. They REALLY dry out on the grill, though. If you cook past "warm," they do dry out terribly. You might try it. They have a completely different taste when they're juicy. Also, health food stores often have a dry "burger mix." This might be fresher and more to your liking. I can't think of a brand name, now, but I'm sure they'd know at any nutrition center or whole foods store.

Thanks, Shari!

This afternoon, I am gong to Trader Joe's and Wild Oats and I am going to select a variety of different products to try. My diet has been largley vegetarian at breakfast and lunch and I like that. I am getting both protein and fiber in one fell swoop and I never get crazed cavings these days! I am not eliminating the Bocas but I am going to eat fewer of them. It's the same principle I use for red meat consumption, lean chices not more than three times per week.

I just tried a new one yesterday. There's a company called Quorn, which makes its products out of some kind of mushroom fiber, instead on mostly soy. They are pretty good, making a lot of breaded chicken nuggets and such. This new one was called naked cutlets. It was very good. 80 calories and 10 grams of protein, little cutlets I nuked and put steak sauce on and ate with some winter squash. I will buy them again.

Hey, Bobbie and Mogambo, I just went out and bought some Quorn today! I didn't know we had it out here in the sticks! Whadya know! Can't wait to try it.

About "Quorn," there has been some controversy about it, as it is actually from a type of fungus (which I guess technically is related to mushrooms) which may provoke allergic symptoms in some people.

For veggier "burgers," I really like Amy's California burger and Texas burger. They have a less "meaty" flavor, and more of a veggie and nut flavor, which I prefer. (Though I also love the Gardenburger "meatloaf" which tastes kind of like salsbury steak--of course I haven't had a real salisbury steak in about 25 years, so my memory might be a little off!).
