You have one fat cat girlfriend!!!!!

My tub-o-lard is over 12 pounds now and barely clearing the counters. Does anyone know....is she overweight? What is a healthy weight for a feline (female)?

I fostered (well, adopted, it always works out that way) three kittens born in early August. They are all male brothers. Two of them already weigh 8 pounds but that black on already weights 12 pounds. He looks good, is energetic. I guess he is just a big kitty. I do think the average female feline, though, is 9 to 10 pounds.

HA! Well, I don't think Bobbi saw this thread, but I read in the doggie thread that she got the pic of the cat on her profile from an email and "fell in love with it". So, I guess that lard butt cat isn't hers after all!! So cute though!

Now I feel guilty for giving my poor cat an obesity problem! Seriously guilty! It is diet food for her (I can't believe I have to put her on a diet!). It's time though I fear...she makes this big thudding sound when she jumps on the counters. One day, she just won't make it!:(

I do love to spoil all my feline friends, indoor and out.:)

No, he's not mine but I do have a fat cat named Oreo. She's our scaredy cat, who hides out under the bed in fear of everything. She's not quite as fat as Fat Cat though. He should definitely start a diet and exercise program but my guess is he is genetically inclined to largeness and has a really good appetite! I am facinated by enormous cats and I have seen a few that were incredible. I wonder if they start life by eating the runt of the litter?. Our second cat, Gabby, is wiry and bounces off the walls half the time. She can send Oreo scurrying for my bedroom with a look. Interestingly, the only time Oreo will not back down from Gabby is feeding time. She holds her ground and when Gabby goes after her, they bat at each other without actually making contact. Cat fight! Once they have their bowls in front of them, it's over. Gabby eats and gets on with her day. Oreo waits and finishes off Gabby's food. Only then does she realize she's out in the open, possibly being stalked, and she goes back into hiding. :)

Edited to add a link to a book called Is Your Cat Too Fat at Amazon. Read this editorail reveiw and tell that itDOES NOT recommend that the cat eat the natopathic vet. I think it does! :)

Healthy weight depends on the cat's size. I have a bobtail tortie who was 8# when I adopted her, and now weighs 10#. She'd be better at 8 or 9, but she won't listen to me and eat the diet food. My cat Simon is 14# (but I thought he'd be more because he's a fattycake). He'd be better at 12. My cat Mandy is between 6 and 7 pounds, and she's underweight (can you believe it?). Though she did gain weight since I adopted her. Then, I could feel several of her vertebrae and her hip bones when I petted her. I'd like to see an extra pound on her (and the others can spare them).

A good weight for a cat is around 8-12 pounds, IMO (8# for small cats, 12 pounds for larger cats). Though there are larger cats who weigh more (14-16#) and aren't overweight because of their size. I once had a cat, Frisco, who weighed 16#, but he was a big cat: long body and legs, and it fit him well.

If you cat goes "out" in the middle, s/he is overweight. If there is a pooch under the belly, s/he may be overweight. But overweight cats can be healthy (Simon is a load, but he's the healthiest of my bunch).

Check with your vet if you are concerned.

Veterinarians now classify animals according to what is called Body Condition Score. This is not based on a number (the weight), but rather the size of the cat (or dog) and their "shape"! This is a scale from 1-9, with 4-5 being ideal, 1 being emaciated and 9 being severely obese. The "ideal" is a cat (or dog) with a nice abdominal tuck when viewed from the side and from the top, ribs are palpable, but not sticking out. There shouldn't be a lot of excess abdominal fat hanging between the legs (although a lot of cats have a small "belly" hanging!). So, you can do this subjective assessment on your kitty to see if she might be too heavy. The biggest risk for overweight kitties is diabetes, so if she is too big now, you might consider a weight loss program to hopefully prevent some problems in the future!

Oh my gosh!! Bobbi, your cat is adorable! I couldn't stop laughing when I saw the expression on it's face. I had to call my kids in to see....dmd:D

He's not mine, which is great becasue I would hate to be adding a diet and exercise program for a cat to my To Do list! Somebody emailed him to me and I stole him for my avatar because he is so rotund and he's sits in a way that is odd for a cat, don't you think?

Bobbi, you are so funny! Thanks for the link, I'll check it out!

Thanks Kathryn and Edie for the rundown on Cat Fatness.

I am still trying to deny that my little baby has a problem. I said to hubby, "Are you sure she looks overweight?", and he says, "Honey, C'mon........she looks like a lightbulb!!!". Boy, we were laughin'. And she definitly goes "out" in the middle. Diet cat food for sure now. Do I have to stop feeding her her wet food treats? She doesn't eat much, but I offer it. Do I have to stop with that?
