Blagojevich is making his senate appt!

I find it flippin hilarious! But then, I don't live in Illinois like you do. One of the reasons I can laugh is b/c I know nothing the jackass does from this point on will ever actually be taken seriously.

I guess the only thing that's bothersome is the $$$ that'll be spent on the (I'm sure very brief) confirmation hearings. :rolleyes:

I can't stand him! I feel shame we have him as a governor. But what can I say, I never vote for him.

Honestly, though, I know nothing about Ronald Burris, but I have to wonder about his "suitability" because of his willingness to step into the viper's nest this whole thing has become. He may be the perfect candidate, but he'll never be accepted as such because of this mess.
 
Burris is OK, maybe why Blago appointed him, he knows that he is OK, so trying to get the last laugh by appointing someone decent. He is 71, African American. Not sure what will happen now.

In Illinois, everything is at a total standstill, something this state does not need. It is a real joke, although not funny as we sink further and further into debt.

OMG. That little wooden doll looks just like Blago! "Testicular fortitude..." perfectly stated. Blago sure does have platinum one's. I feel sorry for Burris, though, if he's a good, trustworthy man. The slime from being appointed by Blagojevich might be impossible to wash off. I agree about the "last laugh" of his choice.

What kills me is the way there seems to be no legal way to yank Blagojevich down from his perch. He's so clearly a dangerous nut.
 
I'm amused by it all as well, though I probably shouldn't be. I should be outraged, or at the very least...a little surprised. Yet I'm not.

Honestly, I think this is how all things are done in Illinois. Blagojevich just got caught.
 
I think he came out and said that at one point. I can't remember if I read it in print or saw it on camera, but I think he said something about him not doing anything that hadn't been done before.

My only question is why was he so blatant about it? Does he think he's untouchable? And if he does, what gives him reason to think so?

It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. And if Jesse Jackson Jr. manages to sneak away unscathed. :rolleyes:

I actually think he is just stupid and that is why he thinks he can get away with it. What ever, the man has been frustrating the state since January 2003....yet there are those who re-elected him, go figure.
 
I heard/read somewhere that Nixon was one of his idols, but apparently he didn't get the part where Nixon didn't come out victorious! He does act as if everything he's done is perfectly normal and doesn't seem to get that outside his little world, it's not and won't fly. Be interesting to see how it all plays out.
 
OK after hearing the full story I'm not laughing anymore--I'm somewhat disturbed. Evidently what he's doing is technically legal. Forget the expense of confirmation hearings--there are gonna be court battles out the wazoo over this. :mad::rolleyes::eek:

What I don't get--& maybe one of you Illinois gals can clear this up for me--is why has he not been impeached yet? Why form a committee for impeachment first? This seems like a no-brainer to me, you'd think they would've just taken the vote the day after he got caught. Are they waiting for a conviction? Or is it that he has so much dirt on the other pols?
 
I think our General Assembly is restrained somewhat by Fitzgerald's federal case. Fitzgerald sent them a letter asking that they not investigate certain issues nor take testimony from a list of certain people for fear it would compromise his case.
 
I'm sure there are due process issues here too. I would hope that there are some hurdles in place to keep the legislature from acting without an appropriate amount of evidence, etc. etc.

I guess when you are totally busted for doing something totally stupid, your choices are to be insanely contrite or ridiculously arrogant. Obviously he's gone with the latter, which is probably his better option since contrition won't keep him out of prison.

Last year the House tried to bring up impeachment, but it did not go. The Democrats control both House and Senate in Illinois and there were people there protecting him. Now they just all want him gone because he has done nothing, truly, nothing. It is comical he is going to "work".

They are trying to run this by the book and get him this time, so therefore the committee, but not sure where it will go since they have to be careful not to tromp on the Feds case.

My biggest fear, he will not go. But I had been resolved to him being here until 2010, and if so, oh well, at least now I think he will be voted out(and yes, he will rerun if he can, he thinks he is invincible).

OMG! That is just not possible! Polls showing him as THE most unpopular politician in the US as of last night.

I think this guy has some serious psychological issues. Delusions of grandeur or something. He needs some real help, not just a boot out of office. I can see him doing something crazy from the top of a clock tower someday. :eek:
 
Oh Laura, you should hear the soundbites. Back in November, the Tribune reported that his approval rating was 13%, mind you, before this all broke. Same day that was reported, he had a soundbite saying he was doing a great job, and he would get re-elected in 2010. Makes me think he is going into the polls and changing votes to be so certain.

Downstate, on talk radio, the committee members are talking. They are waiting for the Federal judge rulings on what tapes they can use, but they are working their way through things and will pass the findings on sometime in January. I think they really want to make sure everything is on the up and up so it holds up.
 
Is impeaching a governor the same as a president? Remember Clinton was impeached but still served the remainder of his term. Also, wasn't CA gov Davis impeached or removed from office somehow before Arnie took over? Unfortunately by the time the courts settle everything it will 2010.
 
Impeachment is the process--it's when congress considers removing the pres, something like an indictment, during which you have hearings, testimonies, etc. THEN, and only IF congress (I think the House) determines there is grounds for removal, congress has to vote on whether or not to remove the pres. So a pres can be impeached without being removed from office.

I'm sure removing a gov from office varies from state to state. Don't know if Illinois has a different procedure.
