Black Diamond Yoga Mat?

I saw this mentioned in another post and am curious about it. I don't know what kind of mat I have but my hands keep slipping on it (feet are OK). I've started wearing biking gloves when doing yoga 'cause they'll stick to the mat, but they dig into the area between my fingers during downward-facing dog. Is this Black Diamond mat somehow stickier than others? --Karen

Hi Karen. My Black Diamond yoga mat arrived via UPS yesterday. It's not a sticky mat, as it doesn't have the tackiness that a sticky mat has. Instead the surface is flat (as opposed to shiny)
rubber with a slight texture. It's going to provide me with alot more traction than I was getting from my LA yoga mat. At 1/4 inch thick, it will provide cushioning, but it's not squishy.

I had a wonderful mat that also happened to be a truck bed liner. I found it at a local Big Lots store several years ago for $30. Originally purchased to line the bed of my Ford Ranger, I usually stored it rolled up indoors. On a whim one day I decided to try it as a yoga mat and it turned out to be a great surface for yoga. I sold my truck, bed liner included, and have been without a decent yoga mat for a year. I did look around for another truck mat, but I couldn't find anything that resembled the one I had. So, I finally broke down and made the big purchase because my yoga practice has really suffered (I get really frustrated when I'm slipping around!) I only wish that I would have made the investment months ago.

Black Diamond Update

Hi Again. I used my new mat for the first time this morning. It does indeed have a bit of stickiness to it, but it doesn't feel as tacky as a "sticky mat". Of course with use it may become stickier. Also, the mat has a faint sheen to it, so it's not completely flat as I thought at first. When I first looked at the mat it was late at night in low light, after I arrived home from work and retrieved it from my front door.

At any rate, I haven't had any slipping problems with it yet. Today's practice was not strenuous enough to work up a sweat though. I really like the feel of this mat, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

RE: Black Diamond Update

Thanks for the info! Could you let me know how it goes after you've worked out "sweaty-handed"? That's where I run into trouble. Appreciate it! --Karen
