Just wanted to let you all know my birth story!
Contractions started on Tues 19/11 at about 8/9pm. I was in total denial and couldn’t believe this could be it. Because of the situation with DH, I was alone in the house but had planned to call a neighbour once I was in labour, who would drive me to hospital and contact my mum, sister and brother on the way.
Didn’t sleep a wink on the Tues night. Was frantically packing overnight bags for me and the baby – nothing like contractions to motivate you to pack your things for hospital! Called neighbour on Weds morning. Rushed to hospital, calling mum et al on the way. I was 5cm dilated by 1pm and inhaling lots of gas and air!! All my family (all doctors) were with me in the delivery room as was my neighbour (also a doctor) – the midwives said it was one of the most unique births they had experienced! I had classical music playing in the background which did help but I was petrified all the same. I kept asking for the anaesthetist for my epidural! Things progressed very quickly and by 7pm I was pushing, having had an epidural in for about 2 hours. I pushed for 2.5 hours by which time the epidural had worn off completely – ouchie! Gas and air got me through the painful last few minutes when Max’s head came out. Max was born at 9.30, just before the doctors were going to use the ventouse/forceps to pull him out.
Unfortunately, plcaenta got caught up with the fibroids and had to be removed manually in theatre. With post theatre recovery procedures etc.., I was unable to hold Max properly and felt totally helpless. Didn’t get to sleep till about 5am on Thurs morning and was absolutely exhausted, having not slept a wink the night before. By Thurs afternoon, the drip and catheter were out and I was able to breast feed for the first time. What an absolute joy! Feeding continues to go well with Max latching on properly every time and a plentiful milk supply. He eats a LOT and gained 1lb in his first week!
On the DH front, I debated for a long time whether or not to have him at the birth. In the end I did call him and he was grateful that I had, after all that has happened. He now wants to make amends and try to reconcile but I am finding it very difficult to accept that something like this wouldn’t happen again and do not trust him at all. I do not feel the same way about him either. This continues to be a difficult aspect of life and I can only pray that the right thing will happen.
Max is an absolute joy and a dream – so far! I am loving motherhood and love my little guy so very much!! I would do it all again tomorrow to have another one!
Anyway, that’s my birth story!
Hope all the expectant mum’s are doing alright? It’s so worth it when your baby arrives, believe me. The joy and elation is indescribable.
On the fitness front, I gained about 25lbs with my pregnancy and have now lost all but 3 lbs of it! My stomach is gradually going down and is almost back to normal – I think breast feeding really helps. I am already going for long gentle walks with Max in a sling/papoose and these have helped my recovery no end. Will wait till my 6 week check before I start running, stepping, doing weights etc.. I feel so positive about motherhood ! Max is the joy of my life.
Ok, I’ll stop going on and on!
