Birth control pills

Okay, maybe this question is too personal, but I have to ask. Have any of you taken birth control pills for a long time (like over 5 years) and then gone off? How did you feel? How long did it take for you to "normalize". I have been on them for about 9 or 10 years, and want to go off. I think they make me moody and I am just not crazy about feeding hormones into my body all these years. I am just afraid of how my body will react once I do. Any advice? Sorry if TMI.

Thanks, Thea

I recently went off because I had screwed up and things were all messed up. It's only been one month, but my body actually did very well - right on schedule all by itself and I didn't notice the HORRIFIC PMS that I've been having...though it was still noticable. I've had possibly a little more cramping, but I'm not sure if it's related to going off of the pill - probably too soon to tell. If it works and getting PG is not a worry or fear, then I'd probably go for it. Hubby and I aren't ready to start trying yet, but we figure getting the system purged and off the pills is probably good.

Good luck to you!

Most of us don't mind. Certainly I don't. :)

I was on Ortho for about 7 years & went off when I got divorced. HUGE mistake. My TOM was minimal on the pill--like 2 days & just a little bit of spotting. When I went off the pill I felt like I kept getting hit by a freight train once a month.

So 2 years later I went back on the same pill & for some reason it did not have the same effect. In fact, it had no effect at all. Same freight train every month.

I went on Seasonale 4 months ago & I absolutely love it. I would recommend it to anyone.

You should talk to your dr. Maybe he/she could switch you to a different pill that doesn't have any negative side effects.

Well, I'm on the pill (actually, the Ring), because my "normal" periods are unbearable. Been on it for about 8 or 9 years now. However, there was one month where I did stop taking the pill and I got back to my "normal" self right away. My next period came when I expected it would, and with the full brutal force that I used to have before ever starting the pill. At that time, I vowed to never go off the pill again! LOL! :p I think it's usually a fairly quick and asymptomatic process, so I don't think you have anything to worry about. You could always ask your doctor if you're unsure - different pills have different effects on different women. So you never know. But my personal experience is that if I go off the pill, I am back to my old self very quickly. And it ain't pretty. ;)

Hello!

I was on the pill for about 5 years and went off about 3 months ago because it was making me very moody. I have noticed my cramps are worse now, but my mood is much better!! i'm very happy i went off of it. My body thanks me i can tell!

I was on the pill for only one year, and when I got off, my hormones were screwed up! I got really bad acne and my cycle was haywire for a few months. However, I felt better emotionally and I had moods again that felt more like me instead of just....blah. The affects didn't last long and I was happy to be off!!! I wish I was never on them in the first place and I got off of them because I wanted to be more natural and get all the crap out of my body. I think that working out will help you adjust, also cut out sugar since that is a chemical imbalance trigger. That is what helped my body recover from getting wacked!

I was on the pill for over 20 years. I went off recently and switched to a Mirena IUD. I never had any hormonal issues or PMS on or off the pill or with the IUD, so I'm not sure if this is much help. For me, it hasn't been any different.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. I am still deciding but I think I will give it a try without the pill for a while. If it is miserable, I can always go back on. I really appreciate your insight!

Thanks again, Thea
