BFFM - I need help with food allergies & protein ideas

hokypoky

Cathlete
I started the plan a week ago, and find that my ratios are usually low on the protein end. The problem is I'm allergic to whey (which is in most dairy), and eggs (whites & yolks). I'm getting tired of chicken! I didn't want to do protein shakes, but I may need to in order to get the protein in. I can have soy.

Are there any shakes that don't have whey or dairy?
Are there any carb foods that are higher in protein than others (like certain cereals)?
Any thoughts on soy?

Thank you!

Quinoa is a high protein grain.

You can get rice/pea protein (both are high quality proteins, and together they are complete proteins) rather than soy. I get one called "Vegan Complete" from www.veganessentials.com (I mix it with berries, alone, it has a bit of an "artificial sweetener" taste, even though it doesn't contain any). I find it more digestible than soy, and I am somewhat cautious about "isolated soy protein" and "concentrated soy proteins," as some studies have shown increased risk of breast cancer with soy protein, and this was the type used (rather than soy FOODS like edamame, tempeh, tofu and soy milk, that populations have been consuming for centuries with positive effects).

Tempeh is high in good-quality protein (and is also more digestible than some forms of soy). It makes a great mock "chicken or the egg" salad (tastes like a little of both to me, but I haven't had either for a long time). Just steam (unless it says it's "ready to use", tempeh needs to be steamed about 20 minutes before using), mash, and add all the ingredients you'd add to chicken or egg salad (mayo, mustard, chopped celery, chopped onions or scallions, pickle relish, whatever you like).

There are some high-protein cereals you can find in health food stores. Most of them get more protein by adding soy protein.

Some grains, like Kamut and amaranth, are higher in protein than others.

RE: BFFM - I need help with food allergies & protein id...

Dayna,
I know Kathryn has recommended one protein called Vegan Complete meal replacement (it has 25 grams of rice/pea protein per serving). I haven't tried it yet, but you may want to ask her about it. I thought about ordering it myself because it sounded like a great one that might be easier to digest. As for soy sources and carb foods that are better than others...I haven't needed to research it because I usually get more than enough protein in a day, but I am very sure someone else can help you along those lines:) .

Have you thought of adding pork, beef or fish to your diet?
A serving of oatmeal has 5 grams of protein. Nuts and legumes also contain protein.

Kathryn & Robin - thanks for the simultaneous thoughts! I will definitely order Vegan Complete...sometimes I don't have time to cook more than once a day. Candi, I just bought some swordfish steaks I hope I will like. I bought some cheap frozen salmon which was terrible, so I think I'll have to suck it up and spend a little $$ when it comes to fish.

Thanks, ladies, for your "fresh" ideas!:9

Here are some coupons for www.veganessentials.com . (I LOVE this place! I ordered Friday morning, they shipped it Friday afternoon, and I got my order on Monday---but they are in Wisconsin and I'm in Illinois, so not so far). And shipping and handling is only either $5.95 or $6.95.

We've got 2 coupon codes for you this month, and here's how you can save: Use coupon code "october2005a" between now and 10/9/05 and save 5% off of any order (excluding shipping). Better yet, if you spend $60.00 or more (excluding shipping) before October 9th, 2005 you can use coupon code "october2005b" and save 10% off of your order total, excluding shipping. Both coupons expire on October 9th, 2005, so be sure to use them soon to save on all items we sell!

Thanks for the coupons Kathryn! I sure appreciate that. I've also never tried tempeh - I'm delving into a whole new realm of food since I found out about these allergies in January. In many ways, it's expanded my options; at least I'm open to more things!
