Bestoutwest - ? for a vet

My dd has two gerbils and they are 3 yrs old. (I swear I run a geriatric pet centre) I never ever look at them. I love pets but draw the line of interest at small rodents. She told me a while ago that something was wrong with one of them - but I never looked at it. She mentioned it again about a week or so ago - and I never looked at it. Yesterday I looked! GROSS! It has a humungous tumour or something on the side of it's neck - the tumour is half the size of the gerbil! What do you do? We are half an hour from a vet and there's no way I'd pay for surgery for the little guy but I'm not sure what to do. Do I make the trip to have the little guy put down? What is the most humane way of dealing with this? My dd doesn't want to touch it because of this tumour - I've never wanted to touch it - but being a mom of course I'll do it - if I have to! Please tell me what to do!

I'm Not a vet ..At All but a mom with kids and pets ... I feel for you I bet Mother nature will take its course real fast at this point . Then you can have a funural. And well clean out the cage and get another one or something differant . I could never deal with a Gerbil ... But A Hamster I can handle . Strange !!!.Tell your child now that hes sick and gonna die ... I so would not take it to Vet . It costs so much . Ok I hope Bestoutwest tells you what eles to do . I cross my fingers for you .
 
I apologize for sounding a little terse here, but the humane thing to do is to take the gerbil to a vet. It's part of the responsibility of having the pet.

I agree. It may not cost that much to treat, or in any case the vet can tell if the animal is suffering and if euthanasia would be the more humane way to go.
 
Hi Trish,

Tumors are a very common cause of gerbil deaths! The best thing would be to take it to the local vet and have it humanely euthanized. Sorry you have to deal with this and sorry for your daughter who will lose a pet.:-(
