Best Workout Shoes???

I saw a thread recently on this topic but I thought I would ask.
My Nike crosstrainers just aren't cutting it.

Thanks!

Shirley

Hi Shirley

I love my Brooks Vapor running shoes for my Cathe workouts. I used to save them for running only and wear my Nike crosstrainers for my indoor workouts but when I stopped running during my recent pregnancy, I tried my runners for my Cathe workouts and was so happy with them. I find they are quite light but provide good support and stability.

Hi, Shirley, I like the Reebok Vector IXT for aerobic training other than running. I always wear sports specific shoes and wear them only for working out to save wear and tear and get more bang for my buck. I would caution against wearing running shoes for step and hi/lo if you work out frequently because they are designed for lateral movement. They may specifically prevent the foot from rolling inward or out but they may not be supportive enough for lateral or sideways movement and that support can be very important particularly if you have any bio-mechanical problems. I pronate severely which starts at the foot but can affect my knees and hips. I know many people don't have this problem but if you do, you can do alot of damage before you realize the shoe is a major factor. So when it comes to shoes, I think it's best to err on the side of caution and have a pair for each type of training. You can get great shoes dirt cheap too! Sierra Trading is a great resource. I can wear my running shoes for strength training but don't because I want to maximze mileage. I apologize for sounding like such a nag but proper form and great shoes are the two most important factors for working out sucessfully and, hopefully, injury free!

I love my Nike Shox. I have really bad feet w/no arch--if I have the wrong shoes my feet cramp up after like 10 minutes of step. But I can step or run in the Shox, they're really comfortable.

I love nike shox too, but i only wear them for running. They are fantastic! For step and kickboxing, i wear New Balance. I'm thinking of switching to Ryka as a lot of people around here seem to like them!

Hi Shirley,

I like to switch between my New Balance 609's & Ryka Enlights. I prefer the New Balances for kickboxing though. They seem a little lighter for all the kicks. I would also suggest these two styles if your foot is a little narrower.

Another vote for NB 609s. I just got mine the day after Christmas and my feet have thanked me during every workout!!! I went looking for Ryka's but we don't have a Women's FootLocker here and I'm afraid to order them online w/o trying them on first.

Hi Bobbi,

I think you're the only person who's ever mentioned Reeboks on the forum. So far, & I've tried many kinds, Reeboks are the only shoes I can wear with any kind of comfort.

I will certainly check out the ones you spoke of...thanks!

I just bought a pair of New Balance as well...don't remember the style # though. They work for me but I am also no work out shoe guru. I was wearing sketchers previous to buying these! lol

Hi Shirley,

Here's my 2 cents on the shoes. First of all, when I was shopping, I found that there is no such thing anymore as pure aerobic shoes. They are all basically considered cross-training. (I slightly remember a few leftoever pure aerobic, but nobody carried them.) I bought some New Balance, can't remember type, and hated them. Seems that my foot would slide on side moves. I switched to some top of the line Rykas. I looked on line after seeing the link from Cathe's home page, I believe. I liked the Rykas much better. I've had success with Reebok also. I change my shoes about every six months. (actually, I rotate them through, the worst become my new gardening shoes! I just can't throw 'em away. :D ) Unfortunately, I don't think you can tell which ones will be best for you feet until you've already bought them and tried them out. Hope this helped, good luck in shopping.

I can't stress enough to go to a good atheletic shoe store and talk to a knowlegeable staff person. I have learned so much in the past year about my feet as well as the best shoes for my feet. EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT FEET. What works for some people will not work for others. Everyone raves about Rykas. Every year I try them on, but they don't fit right on my heel. My foot slips. I have a wide foot with a high arch, and New Balance has been the best shoe for my feet. They make a wide width shoe. If you talk to someone who can measure your feet and talk to you a little, you will probably find the right fit.

Fab, Saucony is also an excellent choice for wide shoes. They have premium running shoes. I am not so sure about their trainers though.

Avia has a line labelled "instructor level" and although I have never tried them, they intrigue me!
