BEST Cathe "series" for MAX weight loss?

Cathlete
Never thought this would ever happen, but my sis-in-law WANTS to exercise with Cathe! ha! I've been trying to get her to workout for about 8 years, but she never listened to me. But, when she saw me doing the step heat routine the other day, she really got interested. I can't tell you what a miracle this is, honestly. The problem is, she is about 40+ lbs overweight, and won't listen to me about cutting out processed foods. Pasta is her favorite food group. But, I've given up preaching. And now with her new interest in Cathe,I don't want to blow things my talking "diet" right now.

Q:
What would be the BEST Cathe "series" for her (to LOSE weight, not add mass)? (no high step or regular step or cardio, as she can borrow my tapes).

I think she needs a good weight routine for: upper body, lower body, or a total body workout dvd or vhs. Her bday is coming up, and I think this would be an awesome gift for her. Nothing too heavy for her on legs, as I certainly don't want her gaining any mass on her lower body, even if it will pump up her stagnant metabolism. I don't want her to get discouraged. I've told her about muscle weighing more than fat, but she's the type who'll want to check the scales daily, despite my advice. So, any suggestions here? What's the best tape/s for weight loss? She's 5'7 and about 180. She used to be about 140 when I first met her. She said she'd die to be that weight again. I know that unless she changes her eating habits, that is just not going to happen. But, at least she is interested in exercising now. I hope that the diet change will gradually take place. She is pear shaped. So, I think an:

-upper body workout that will help ADD mass, but no barbells, unless dumbbells can be substituted. And no other "stuff" (balls, bands, etc). If there's a lot of extras, I know she won't do it. She can borrow my dumbbells, as I have duplicate sets. But, I can't give up my barbell. ha!

and

-lower body workout that will not make her GAIN mass (she does have very muscular, heavy legs) So, is Leaner Legs the best bet here? or? Again, no barbell or band work.

THX!

RE: BEST Cathe

Hello,

Here's my suggestion...don't know if you already have this DVD to lend but it would be a good investment for her even for keeps...but BASIC STEP AND BODY FUSION! I'm assuming that your SIL is not only overweight but is probably a beginner exerciser and needs to build up her cardiovascular and muscle endurance. Even though I'm a believer that any cathe workout, for the most part, can be modified to fit your current level of fitness this DVD may be her best bet. It is highly versatile, breaks down the workouts into manageable pieces, and offers variety. For example, the DVD contains a 30 min basic step routine, 50 min body fusion cardio/weights circuit workout, 2 20 min upper and lower body routines, and a 10 min ab workout. Even though cathe does use stability balls and bands for the latter 3 workouts, these are in no way necessary and can easily be done with just hand weights and not the stability ball or exercise tubing. Though, it may be a consideration for the future to invest in this inexpensive equipment for your SIL to grow with and add variety to the routine. Once she gains confidence and begins to see weight loss with this program she could progress to programs like cardio and weights, maximum intensity strength, ANY WORKOUTS REALLY! :) Again, you might coach her in how to break up the workouts into smaller parts and how to modify the moves to build up stamina until they can be completed. Also, if she's interested in Cathe, and you haven't already, point her in the direction of this website. I know that it has been a valuable resource for me while learning about the versatility of Cathe workouts, for support, what programs work best for me, and reinforcement about EATING CLEAN! Even though you may not want to push her anymore about it, these boards could provide that subtle reminder (many from Cathe herself!) that in order to see max results, diet does play a huge role. I wish you guys both the best in health and let me know if I can offer any more advice! It's fun to share fitness information with everyone out there! :)

RE: BEST Cathe

Thanks Catie! and I DO have the Basic Step dvd! I never bothered to really look through the weight workout part, because I knew it would be too easy for me. But I didn't think about the fact it could work for her. And since I found the step part a bit easy now too, I might as well just give the dvd to her! :) Excellent! thanks!

I did tell her about this site. I'm hoping she'll join up, or at the very least, maybe lurk and read through the various threads. She even called me up this morning, asking if she could come over and join me for the Step Heat routine today! :)

RE: BEST Cathe

beachgerrl,

glad i could offer the suggestion! One of my good friends is currently looking to lose some weight but needs to build up her fitness level a bit first before diving into something more strenuous. I just found this DVD to be so perfect, Cathe just seems extra motivating for new exercisers and the workouts still provide a challenge for newbies...unlike some other programs out there that don't seem to help you break a sweat. Anyway, hope your Step Heat routine was fun today...I actually haven't tried that yet, hmmm another DVD purchase?:9 Have a fabulous week and I'll see you around the forums.
